A funny, disturbing, unique and fascinating story about a laundry machine that suddenly produces a silent, subservient woman. James Lee combines the patience and isolationism of Tsai (who Lee admits was a major influence), the maverick narrative sensibilities of Weerasethakul, and the gender politics of Bunuel. The camera style (shot on digital video) is simple, but services the storytelling well.

the spirit of a washing machine manifests as a woman enslaved in domestic servitude ~ a static, sad, and lonely story ensues

Proving yet again that asian static camera minimalism trumps it's european counterpart almost every time. Starts off very much like a charmingly amateurish (i.e. dv shot) variation on Tsai with possibly broader humor and less pathos (and possibly a bit more stylized, acting-wise, almost closer to very early Fassbinder), before delving into Bunuel-style social commentary (think Diary of a Chambermaid). Slightly clumsy at times, and a bit overlong, but very endearing and enjoyable just the same.
