there's no better indictment of national institutional failure than this frustrating, defeated clusterfuck, but there's something universal too in its doomed longing for epistemological comforts. consider the two perfect endings, with two tunnels: one is dark and inscrutable, but the second, more banal little tunnel is worse still, lit and revealed to hold nothing, no certainties and no catharsis. look deep into the suspects' eyes, and still they only reflect our own. "fuck, i don't know."

Unlike The Host, this one really struck a chord. Bong victoriously coalesces irreverent yet lucrative humor with the cardinal thesis of bereavement and cessation. He brings and carries this inept and dirty humor on his shoulders even in the most grim places. The authorities here are depicted as maladroit and infelicitous human beings, a subtle allusion and mention of the regime of South Korea which happened a long time ago. Impressive film.

It seems rather normal as a film, but it isn't. There's something unsettling about how easily they can weave torture and flagrant police abuse into an apparently standard-fare detective story. The character-corruption of the Seoul detective is really well done. And the actual snoop-work is interesting as well. Excellent film.

It was refreshing to see a crime flick that isnt build on the usual Hollywood model and which takes place in a whole different culture. Bong is a great visionary director and his images both in MoM and Madeo are nothing but exceptional. Dont know why he insists on using a semiretarded boy in both, but hey, who cares cause it works and both are great films. Im looking forward to see more of his work and what the future will bring us from Bong's hand.

Joon-Ho Bong's undisputed masterpiece that is about a fledgling nation's insecurity and the fragile nature of Korean society. As usual there's a cynical portrayal of civil servants that is nuanced and much fairer than the typical critical look at government incompetence. There's a genuine feeling of hopelessness, despair, and (at times comedic) frustration in this film which also reflects 80's Korea from the lonely winding desolate rural road to the methodology of the serial killer.

A great film on many levels. First, and foremost, it's a strong police investigation film, with an unconventional willingness to get dirty and a very human touch that brings both moving moments and amusing ones. The undertones, however, are what make the film come into it's own, with commentary on the investigative methods of the cops in the film against the backdrop of the waning days of South Korea's authoritarian regime.

The ending (to this true story) defies all expectations, as does the film's humor and its portrayal of the police as well-meaning but frustrated and inept. Haunting and hilarious, and riveting from the first frame to the last.

For the most part reasonably entertaining, with nice cinematography and an interesting portrayal of police procedure, but dragged on from one suspect to the next without much point. There was a certain lack of suspense that was strangely at odds with an almost silly tendency at times towards the melodramatic. Some interesting things were going on thematically for a while, but in the end it wore a little thin.

I'm sorry but I need more than a few awesome drop kicks and good cinematography to make me like a movie. That's really all this movie had. It features a bunch of incredibly unlikable characters who torture and beat people for little to no reason. They torture a mentally challenged boy for a good chunk of the film. How are you people not disgusted by that? These characters are inept, stupid and impossible to root for. Why am I rooting for the rapist to win? It's cause this movie blows.

Kind of a mix between Zodiac and 7even, if you know what I mean. A clueless police on the search for a serial killer, try to pin it on anyone they can, again they bring humour into the darkest of places and make it work. The fact it is based on a true story is scary, both because of the inept police and because of the cold hearted maniac.

Serial murder mystery that effectively injects humour into an otherwise grisly plot. Detectives who are often incompetent and negligent provides a fresh twist on the standard investigation. Most of the humour works too only occasionally going over the line to absurdity. Kang-ho Song was extremely entertaining and intense when needed, by contrast Sang-kyung Kim is stunningly dull as 'the stickler' detective. The investigatons conclusion was well handled, but the coda felt a little overdone.

Rural police try to catch a serial killer. They trip into one blunder after the next. They use corrupt and immoral interrogation methods and fail to grasp the evidence. They inflict beatings on multiple innocent people. It looks a lot like vigilante justice under the color of authority. The acting performances was fine, but the people involved were immature and quite unprofessional. I did like how they tried to run down every lead, even the long shots. Entertaining, but not very satisfying.

As much as a period piece as a (true) crime story, Memories of Murder manges to balance quite a lot of different tones elegantly, going from absurd humor over almost Hitchcockian thrills to the uncomfortably realistic crime scene investigations and back again. It was refreshing to see a police procedural so committed to be about (almost) utter incompetence. Also: I'd be surprised if Fincher hadn't watched this on repeat before making Zodiac.

I do enjoy the way Bong darringly flips between extreme tones throughout his work & at its best this creates a wildly dynamic & illuminating narartive style. However some of the comedy & melodrama were pushed a bit too far for my taste, especially considerring the true events that this movie deals with. I was often questioning its relationship with the real case which took me out of the experience in places. Some great acting, cinematography & soundwork but a bit uneven structure.

A darkly funny cop film (two locals torture people -- one believes in intuition, the other delivers dropkicks -- and an "intellectual" from Seoul) and a moving drama. Joon-ho uses the camera not only to slowly invade rooms and souls or to craft a subtle depiction of a government that is worried to mantain its status. It's a masterpiece of editing -- they say rape and then there is a cop having sex, we see a body and then we see food. And, years later, the officer looks at the camera -- at us.

The film picks itself up after the highly disappointing first 50 minutes to become an involving, effective mystery, laced with some oppulent characterization and hard-hitting scenes. Good. A group of detectives are tasked with catching a serial killer active in Korea circa 1986. The film follows the under-equipped and under-trained detectives in their desperate quest, their extremely questionable interrogation techniques and gross abuse of the handicapped. All presented in a lightly humorous but still unambiguous, blunt manner. This film, like most foreign cinema, has its cultural quirks but the subject matter has been competently handled. A good production. Recommended.

Some truly remarkable cinematography here that never fails to highlight a scene just right. There's a comedic undertone accompanying even the darkest elements in this film [till the last 15 min. or so] that I was never completely sold on and makes that shift near the end feel flimsy. Still, a flick with this many irreverent, flying dropkicks never seems like wasted time.

There's plenty of fun in Memories of Murder, with an investigation across multiple beautiful scenes, interesting camera choices and plenty of great comedic moments. Unfortunately, these are also the shortcoming, because they make the more serious moments - as well as the film's darker themes - land with much less impact than they otherwise could have had.

Tonally this is all over the place, ping-ponging between Fincherian noir and slapstick, sometimes hitting other weird notes. This gives the movie a fun, manic energy. Bong really is an awesome director and there are several great shots here. It is almost as if you can see the frame just outside of the screen. The ending shot in particular is stellar and helps make it all feel more substantial. The actors are perfect for Bong's energy and what the hell were with all the crazy drop kicks?

More than its central mystery, Memories of Murder's heart is in its evocation of mid-80s small-town Korea, and its day-to-day rhythms which are so shockingly interrupted. It's this slice-of-life provincialism which make it much more than a "serial killer movie," though it's certainly no slouch in that regard, with some moments of truly disquieting tension. Bong's characters, in each of his films, possess such a lively (often comic) vitality and spontaneity that makes his work feel so alive.

2003 was a hell of a year for South Korea. This is really excellent stuff, and it still manages to find plenty of new things to say in a genre that's practically down to a science at this point. The themes of evil being ever-present and ordinary are handled brilliantly, and the film has a very strong visual language (particularly the editing) that gives you its message entirely, leaving the characters to be complex human beings instead of mouthpieces. Hell yeah.

First. Bong treats his film as was it his little kid, his wife, whatnot. Caressingly picking out images, colors (it seems), lines. Each framing becomes more than a depiction; a study in the depicted. Second. I think my love for a film like this, storywise, boils down to that odd korean cultural element that I most certainly do not understand. The sounds, habits, language. It makes so many things acceptable. Like having a both stupid and wise clown-cop in the leading role. How did that work out??

This is a beautifully directed, well-acted and utterly haunting piece of art. The cinematography remarkably creates a wistful, sombre tone that underlies the fascinating narrative (loosely based on a true story). The director interlaces the dramatic tension with some hilarious moments of police ineptitude and the story is so twisted the audience becomes as befuddled as the protagonists. The opening and final scenes are delicately disturbing and evocative.

Serial killer movies are getting old in general, but this was something new... and not in a good way. I wasn't rooting for the killer, but I was definitely rooting against the police. These police are not very interesting, and they're basically state thugs who relish beating people up (whether there's any real grounds to think they are criminals or not) and who are so lame that at one point they consult a psychic to assist with the investigation. I hated being around these characters

The characterizations are too over the top for me, and so is the comedy, by a mile. I suppose having everyone act completely unrealistic is part of Korean film culture but it doesn't move my needle. I'm just waiting for the next scream-off or slapstick chase scene. Thematically there's not all that much to it that i could discern. A very well done crime drama is elevated immensely by characters, performances, and ideas. The detective characters are deep and well played, and the stuff on police brutality and coerced confessions is good. The Seoul detective serves as kind of a stand in for the viewer--it was very interesting reflecting on how I felt about the brutality with the people I thought innocent and the guy I thought guilty. The film pretends to be formulaic until it's not--I think to set up this moment.

I was aware this movie had received some high praise when I set out to watch it, and I was never disappointed. The way in which comedy is mixed with tragedy and the horrors of normal people committing horrible things works so well in this. In the 1980's in rural South Korea, local cop Song Kang-ho and a cop from Seoul (Kim Sang-kyung) team up to try and solve a series of rapes and murders. It's a pretty typical setup for a profoundly atypical film that, among other things, focuses on the pairs descent from relative certainty to uncertainty and despair as their own limitations and the limitations of the system lead to case being unsolved.

A well-woven, true crime thriller. Balances tension with lighthearted humour in true Bong fashion, and with more restraint and care than can be said for some of his more recent offerings. The film is a slow burn to start but not to the film's detriment. It takes its time developing characters, their case, establishing themes, and then cranks things up to crazy heights in the last act. That ending as well: Hits you like a ton of bricks. Yes. More bricks than Parasite.

Serial killer movie doesn't properly come into focus until its second half, becoming a gripping portrait of a dogged race against time to beat a selection of creepy, slimy suspects (with SE7EN a clear influence, and Fincher seemingly inspired in turn for ZODIAC). Leads to a perfectly chilling, ambiguous finale. Nice periodic breaks into action are well choreographed, though a devolution to silly slapstick (and exploitative moments in the uglier aspects of the case) threaten to bring things down.

The comedic elements in the first half really distracted me, but this is an involving and tense film overall raising some complex moral and philosophical questions. I'm impressed.
