Memphis Belle

One of those films that would get shown quite often on TV when I was a kid (but is pretty much forgotten now) - I liked it then, will have to watch it again some day.

Even as a child it seemed cheesy -right down to the re-naming of the dog- but fun. As an adult it's unbearable.

Pretty good.

Cheesy war drama about the "one last mission" for a bomber airplane crew. It has a strong young cast of actors, but the story itself isn't particularly memorable.

It's good.

Not a lot of war aviation movies out there about bomber crews, so I appreciated seeing that side of the story in a movie for a change. It's set up nicely with letting us get to know the crew, but I enjoyed it most when the intense action kicked up. There was a genuine sense of dread and excitement to the action scenes and though the FX does look noticeably outdated at times, watching it today, it didn't take away from the thrills. A nice surprise that kept me entertained throughout.

Ok, I love airplanes and this movie was awesome. The visual effects weren't bad and the acting was great. The directing was spontanius. Definitely a favorite.

A capsule rendition of the US air war against Germany in WWII. It's a pretty good film - with a happy ending.

I'm pretty sure this movie doesn't go very far towards capturing what it was really like for WWII bomber squads flying to Germany and back. Instead, it's cheesy and safe almost to the point of being Disneyfied, and tries to use the interplay between the different characters in the plane as its main substance. The ensemble cast doesn't really have time or space to gel, and the battle sequences are lacking in tension for the most part. It's not great. A Sunday afternoon time-passer at best.

The beginning of the movie is mildly interesting. I enjoyed the final flight sequence. Nothing ground-breaking, but still a good time.

SPOILER: Plane goes out on last mission, gets shot at, makes it back. The end. In the meantime, we have about 90 mins to fill somehow, so we have a lot of shouting and silly in-fighting amongst the crew that act like kids, to the point where you actually hope they will get blown out the sky. If the real crew were this "unprofessional" one thing is for certain, they wouldn't have made so many successful missions. Decent flight scenes, but very sanitised, clean, safe and ultimately, boring

Pretty tense at times, otherwise it's just another by-the-numbers WWII film.
