It's like Alex Garland tried to make a horror flick that only appeals to nerds like Gabe from The Office. I get the intellectual approach of being a girly Get Out--showing how women are dehumanized in society and folk horror. But the point could've been made in a picture that didn't borrow the worst parts of Lynch & Cronenberg. A director like Jonathan Glazer (of Under the Skin) would've knocked this out the park. Jessie Buckley gives her all, but that's not enough for a recommendation. Avoid.

Alex Garland may be in the same boat as Yorgos Lanthimos; his movies are well made, but they aren’t for everybody. I walked away a little disappointed. The first two acts are extremely well done. It’s legitimately horrifying, beautiful, and hard to look away from, but the last act just didn’t hold up for me. It bites off a bit more than it can chew. It’s still deeply unsettling and extremely well acted and directed, and I do like some of the themes, so it’s not a total miss in my book.

*SPOILERS* This is the worst kind of artsy horror film. It's a home invasion movie with a nude Michael Myers. Wait, it's all a dream? Wait, it's supernatural? Wait, it's sci-fi? Oh, the whole plot of the movie was just an empty series of random events as a metaphor for a woman's grief and guilt? Fuck off. Check for the DVD at Wal-Mart in the "3 for 99 cents" bin.

Even the likes of Alex Garland can swing for the fences, only to completely strike out. Men is slow, original, striking, stressful, and utterly nonsensical. Worst of all, it has an air of being smarter than its audience when, frankly, I'm not really sure it has anything to say. It reminds me of Aronofsky's Mother! in a lot of ways, but less frenzied. This is a pretentious pass. Garland is a great talent, I hope this is merely a bad outing and not the beginning of his descent.

It is what it is. This depiction of the ways men often traumatize women isn't untrue, only related with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Jessie Buckley must have been exhausted to play this role, but she does it beautifully. The audiovisual expressions and associative editing patterns are more finely tuned. I love the way nature sings in this film, underscored with a lingering feeling of otherness, if not outright danger. It's charged with divinity. It makes a clumsy script easy to forgive.

There’s a lot of very promising ideas and creepy moments but the third act and especially the climax felt wildly frustrating like Garland didn’t actually have anything to say and was hoping the imagery would provide meaning in itself. An unfortunate miss.

Though Men defies categorization, Garland shoots it like a horror film; think The Shining by way of Buñuel. Harper’s in a beautiful, terrible corner of the world where the simplest interaction or most banal environment can turn toxic, even dangerous, with little warning. It’s grotesque and absurd in the service of observations that feel at once ugly and true.

I really enjoyed the experience of seeing Men, but it doesn't hold up as well to scrutiny a few days later. This has a much more muddy structure and themes than Alex Garland's first two films do, so even though I understood a lot of the high-concept components relating to toxic masculinity and how it continues to find a way to exist, the director struggles to connect those themes to the inciting incident that happens to Jessie Buckley's character. It's still worth seeing for the acting.

In many ways, this is typical of Garland's films, and it seems like less of a problem in his past films. In this film, it's all tied to a specific incident in Buckley's past that we see in some detail. It's a very distinctive and unusually framed incident, and it's extremely unclear how the film's central metaphor ties in to it. Again, this wouldn't be a big problem except that the film's climax suggests very strongly that the connection is quite direct, and frankly, I don't see it.

"A woman saying yes to a date with a man is literally insane and ill-advised, and the whole species' existence counts on them doing it. how do women still go out with guys, when you consider the fact that there is no greater threat to women than men? We're the number one threat to women. Globally and historically, we're the number one cause of injury and mayhem to women. You know what our number one threat is? Heart disease" - some man, don't ask me which one. I get them all mixed up sometimes.

The finale, which is the only part of this hideous mess that I respected, is the perfect metaphor for modern film-making as well - a depressed, nihilistic regurgitation of bloody, uncomfortable nonsense. I guess Alex Garland is on the side of women in this pointless gender war that we are fighting. I hope he is happy.

Rory Kinnear has become the ultimate fucked up English guy you want in your film about the horrors of being in England. Easily Garland's worst so far, but if you're a Cronenberg/Miike fan there is a scene in here that's highly recommendable. As others have said, reminiscent of Mother! in overall tone & metaphorical heavy-handedness.

There are gorgeously shot scenes (visuals are not the problem) and Buckley is a gem. But the story is average and the themes are uninspired. I wouldn't even shit on the themes but we see this commentary everywhere. I mean, it's so on the nose with the title. But even that would be completely fine if the pacing wasn't off. There wasn't really much tension, some of the "scary" things are silly, and some scenes (the ending) go on too long and lose impact. I still LIKED it, but I'm disappointed.

Looks about as good as his previous work. Garland shoots nature in a way that almost no one else is. I know there’s some more bubbling under the surface (rebirth, the green man and all that) but the main theme of this film which is the strain of relationships between men and women kind of bashes you over the head.

On one hand, I love the acting from the leads in this, and I do tend to appreciate horror films that focus heavily on symbolism, such as Mother! and Relic. But this really feels like it’s trying too hard to be meaningful, and too hard to be weird. It does have a few effective scenes, but it doesn’t really excel in any particular way outside of the performances. I appreciate what it’s going for, but I wouldn’t see it again, and it’s difficult to recommend to most people.

The single weirdest movie I have seen to date. This psychological thriller about men and our damn inheritable toxicity is engaging if not confounding. Such out there choices from the filmmaker do give it a lingering effect. But I can’t help but feel some of the elements and symbolism at play were too obscure but I am clueless here… B

the concept of a horror film purely about the ways men traumatize women could easily be an insanely horrifying flick. and the first half is just that. you get everything from abusive narcissist husband, to cop dude who doesnt care to help, misogynist preacher, incel who pretends to be harmless to get close to women.... its all really scary, one of the scariest things ive seen in years. then jumps from that to paranormal, surreal bodyhorror out of nowhere, and... eh? soundtrack is good

It's a really interesting watch. Even purely for the performances of both Buckley and Kinnear. The film is still very Garland style, but also has some considerable differences to his other work. The atmosphere-building worked flawlessly but the last act definitely let me down.

After too few people understood annihilation as a metaphor for the dangerous dynamics of peerbonding, garland chose to go blunt. Which i will honor by saying: this sucks. And if the eve-character in your original-sin setup is swinging a smartphone half of the runtime, why not make it an iphone? Apple? Get it?

It could have turned into a much more powerful horror film, if Men hadn't tried to overemphasize the metaphors and subtext. Still, despite its flaws, the mythological aspect of the story, its wonderful mix of folk and body horror, its nihilistic perspective, and Garland's disturbing visual language managed to impress me.

There's some interesting set pieces in the first third of Men, the tunnel scene comes to mind where Garland create a synesthetic amalgam of imagery, sound and diegetic music. Once set up quite succesfully, a feast of overcooked literal metaphor is force fed to the point of slight nausea. The ridiculous escalation has a slight (unintended) campy quality to it which brings me to a 60 - it's not a painful watch and some fun can be had with the enjoyable actors and Aphex-style gore.

The scariest monster there is. I was expecting this to be a tad more misandrist, and that would've likely made it more enticing, but the film finds a way to carefully stumble its way through a metaphorical story that feels both on the nose and very vague. The scenes with the home intruder and the ending grotesqueness are fun, though not substantial.

In most ways this is pretty well put-together from a tonal and visual standpoint - right down to minute details like the way someone's hair looks after it's been very lightly rained on. Alex Garland is undefeated in these terms. Yet this stands as his weakest film with me (still pretty high praise) due to the thematic try-hardiness and pretentious ending. I mean... it's all a bit heavy-handed, isn't it? "Men are all the same" - in this case, quite literally. Buckley & Kinnear both shine.

I've heard Men described as a "conversation-starter" though the inevitable descent into gender stereotypes that vilify men & martyr women is a convo I don't really want to have. The film starts of strong with an uneasy atmosphere & the subtext of trauma. As the film progresses Buckley's character's guilt & resentment grow as she has a mental breakdown that ends with Kinnear repeatedly birthing himself as a kind of metaphor. Buckley is good, but Kinnear steals the film with his performances.

I love Alex Garland, he makes great films that are different from the standardfare produced elsewhere. It succeeds in a lot of things it tries to do and that is what counts. This was a lot weirder than I expected. It's from A24 so obviously visual and audio (especially the score) are very deliberate and immaculately executed. The second act was extremely tense, even a jaded horror fan like myself felt real agitation! However, the ending, while appropriately gruesome, was a little confusing and honestly the horrific body horror part left me a little lost. The metaphors and symbolism apparent just didn't quite connect for me. Still, worth the watch!

Kocasının intiharını birebir gören Jessie Buckley, kafayı toparlamak için ıssız 1 köy evine gider. Köy de erkekler ilginç davranmaktadır. Olaylar içinde olaylar. Yaradılıştan günümüze erkeklerin durumunu anlatan film, feminist yapısıyla da kadınları aşağıya çekiyor. Kadın karakterin, erkeklere karşı tutumu sert olsa da, erkeklerin kadınlara şiddeti de itici duruyor. Stanley Kubrick ve Alfred Hitchcock film göndermeleriyle izleniyor.

WEBRip RARBG.

Well that was something. I enjoyed being shocked in parts, but I was also in the dark for a lot of it. I've put together what I can from the themes and motivation of it, and appreciate the artistic vision, but there's a lot missing or just not done in a way I could fully appreciate and that's okay. Reminded me of Mother! as far as the outright "what is happening?" feelings throughout. I would recommend a viewing as it's not one you'll ever see coming in the way it's shot. Buckley is great. 6.4

Great atmosphere and a solid build up gets inflated faster than I thought possible as the movie suddenly starts sprinting into the third act, trips over a rake and tumbles head first through a bunch of silliness, before just sort of ending...
