This film understands its subject matter about as much as I understand how Adam Sandler still gets work.

Men, Women & Children is among the most depressing movies I've seen come out recently (next to Detachment, and Disconnected which is pretty reminiscent because of the topic and style). It delves into much deeper than just "see!!!!!! texting is bad!!!!!" because it's really not about that at all, it's just the surface and people are consistently panning this for some reason. It's not amazing, but it's good. Jennifer Garner is also the most annoying woman alive.

A movie about the digital age that wants to say something incredible but can't. Same ol', the net doesn't connect us like it should. We text too much. Props to the actors who try and almost succeed in making you care a lil, but it fails as a drama and comedy. It's worst case scenario over and over for each character. I'd like to see a movie that says that we should still connect with IRL friends but that you can have a meaningful community online as well. But no, that would be too complicated.

Josh Boone drama-porn with a mild Solondzian perverseness about it that elevates the material. All of the existential cut-aways, especially the narration, were too often abandoned to make room for the high-school drama. Should have just been cut completely. A lot of Reitman's concise filmmaking is still here, and I really enjoyed it despite its multitude of flaws.

There is a lack of depth to this discussion about the impact of technology on the modern-day parent/child relationship. This film makes it out to be all about sex. It feels very narrowly focused. Surely, there is more to expose about the dangers/changes surrounding this topic.

Going over reviews here proves that people just went into this thinking one thing because of Sandler and what they thought Reitman was saying about the internet. He wasn't being condescending towards people who use the internet. He was proving a point about people who completely live their lives online and how the internet has changed family/relationship dynamics. If you were mad at it it's probably because it was shittin on you. Still not a great movie tho.

Although I hate how it's seemingly the new "cool thing" to shame our current generation by saying we are all consumed by digital communication and all that stuff, I do find that at least this film does it more subtly than I expected it to. It takes a look at issues that are indeed difficult and important and need to be looked at, but sadly it fails spectacularly to say anything of importance about it.

Men, Women & Children is a pretty decent film. It sustains a mellow tone, often bordering on depressing, but avoids becoming too dull even when presenting clichéd high school drama. While the narration felt like satire, the film doesn't follow through with it (as much as I would have liked it to), instead I felt the film simply critiques attempted control over technology. The cast does well, with the adults adding some much needed levity to the plot. Worth a watch, and a discussion afterwards.

Reitman is a talented filmmaker and the actors give such earnest performances, but sadly their work went into a story that should be put on a satellite and sent straight into the Sun. Not one single scenario has anything meaningful to say, and in fact all but one are abandoned completely. I wish I could trade the director and cast of this film, and have them remake Disconnect (2012), an identically themed film which, despite it's near-comical operatics, is light-years beyond this movie.

The teenagers felt genuine and Sandler wasn't making dick and fart jokes, so that was good.

I have a notorious dislike for Sandler movies. Outside of "Happy Gilmour" & "Punch-Drunk Love", he's useless to me. This immediately reeks of the worst stereotypes. Depressing that Jenn Garner & J.K. Simmons would put their names on it. It wants to be a dramedy, but the silly narrator didn't work for me, nor the emo juxtaposition between humanity & Carl Sagan. Overall it's too insincere to pass on a worthwhile message, despite there being a worthwhile message TO pass on. More kids, less adults.

Some nice honest moments, but felt overshadowed by the cliched "issues" faced by the teens. Their stories revolve around eating disorders, divorce, suicide, losing virginity, creative self expression and feeling like an outsider. Classic teen themes sure, but it ends up feeling a bit like Glee season 1 in terms of how earnestly it's all handled. That's fine, and Glee is Glee, but it takes away from the credibility and impact of the type of film this wants to be.

While it has it's issues, I don't understand the hate for it. Instead of giving the simple 'online communication isn't a real connection' it gives you a world where people actually do make real connections digitally and the 'bad guys' end up being a range from people who restrict it too much to people who place too much importance on it. Covers a wide range of perspectives on a complex issue.

No one plays an MMORPG with a trackpad. And Guild Wars doesn't have a subscription cost. If you're going to try and be condescending about technology, at least do it correctly.

The themes here resonate, the stories are compelling, the performances - including Sandler - uniformly great. I like the complexity of the characters, and their stories are intriguing and believable. But as a whole package it begins to feel a little White People Problems, and the way Reitman tries to ground and satirize these stories - the formal narration and scientific context - falls on its ass from minute one. I enjoyed a lot of the film, but a few minor changes could've made it a lot better

Some who denigrated this said it was like REEFER MADNESS for the Internet, but that implies something a deal less boring. This mosaic of unhappy lives in a Texan suburb, with the connecting theme of deception and depersonalization via the Internet, manages to say very little about anything, while failing to provide much in the way of dramatic tension or emotional impact. Jason Reitman's direction shows, usually in brief flashes, his considerable talent, and there's some good acting, but so what?

Men, Women & Children is too heavy-handed in its attempt to tell us how all of our text-based communication is actually stopping us from communicating as well as we used to with one another, but if you can get past that, it's got some actors putting in a solid effort and enough characters and storylines to keep you from getting bored. If you don't immediately laugh at over-the-top PSAs, Men, Women & Children might be a rewarding watch.
