Takes the heartstrings and runs through them with an electronic turkey carver. I still liked DeNiro.

The ingredients of a good film are there, but none of them combine. It's manipulative, sappy and far too melodramatic. De Niro and CGJ are both pretty good and stand out as the two best things in the film by a mile. Strange that both of them would have a shocking decade of shittiness after this movie.

Gooding and (especially) De Niro are terrific in otherwise insipid biopic, which has surprisingly little dramatic heft, given the context of potentially potent racial politics. The tragedy which marks the start of Act 3 is an unexpectedly abrupt shift in the focus of the story, and makes the redemptive finale feel rushed and unearned. 'White saviour' tropes be damned, the De Niro character would have been a more interesting focal point for this story.

Cuba Gooding Jr., where did you go? He and Bobby take what is a very predictable script here and manage to make something both interesting and watchable. A good cast... man did it ever save this. I know I know, it's based on a significant true story, but i'd rather read a good book than watch a bad movie. Pretty good job on the whole shot, here.

Very few "Drama Films" get my attention, but this film is very good at portraying the hard ships of an African-American trying to be the first of his race to be a US Navy Diver. Cuba Gooding Jr and Robert Deniro provide great performances throughout.

Gooding Jr.'s last serenade before he faded away, a long forgotten memory of Hollywood's past. With a bit more care, attention and consideration this film could've been at least good.

Full-on "inspirational" legal jobbie with two good leads. My little brother watched this when he was 8 and didn't shut up about it for days. That ought not have increased my rating, but it has.

Characterizations too broad and too many cliches and stereotypes invaded the plot. But, it was worth watching.

Some good acting happening here, but the story is too much of a remnant of the old, with those tearjerker moments of heroism and persistance, which really doesn't come out as being inspiring as much as it feels way too fabricated. The whole thing with the heroic music and characters shedding tears to itfeels a bit too obvious these days. The story itself is interesting, though, and the interactions between the two main characters do manage to keep you interested enough in watching it.

Not a bad movie, but the fact that it's "based on a true story" and the secondary lead is fictional really hurts its credibility.

Surprisingly by-the-numbers biopic for a subject that was anything but. While the story of Brashear was certainly intriguing, and De Niro and Gooding Jr. did an admirable job, the faults here lie on less than exemplary writing and directing.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. continued to sign onto films with major stars following his Oscar win in 1996, and while this film is fine enough, it could still be improved.

Good service movie. Cuba Gooding doesn't try to be "cool", he's enthusiastic instead -- a rare and highly endearing quality in movie heroes these days. De Niro in a nonpretentious role is a real asset, too

I know it's a true story, but the film feels really overdone. The only way they could've topped the message was if Cuba wore an American flag cape and a big red S on the front of his shirt. However, I've really got to recommend this just for De Niro. He's THAT frigging awesome here.

I enjoyed this movie. It wasnt cinematically phenominal, but it told the store of Carl Brashear's honorable service to our country. He was the first African American deep sea diver (and also the first recertified amputee diver). It was an interesting story and inspiring.

If this hadn't been so long it would have been fine. Seeing someone overcome incredible adversity (usually physical) is good entertainment the first few times, & then, well I'm watching the same thing over & over. Bob's looking great, no surprise there, & Charliezie as his wife is perfect drunk with smeared lipstick.

Unbelieveable! What a load of tosh this is. Oversentimental, patronising, badly acted - how bad is De Niro in this?! The amount of gushing schmaltz in the first fifteen minutes alone makes it hard to keep your breakfast down. It looked like it was done on a 1970s TV series kind of budget which made the sets look very "back lot" and contrived. Mr Tillman Jr really has no idea.
