Merrily We Go to Hell

March isn't quite as charismatic as the role requires, but it's a fun and funny 30s comedy all the same.

Arzner immediately establishes a breezy rhythm and feel that works very well — she establishes this world of wealth and debauchery through stylish snap camera movements and glittering close-ups, and counters it through the carefully developed naturalism of the scenes between Sylvia Sidney and Frederich March.

The title may just be the best thing about this one (and it's actually a pretty good film). The part where the ex-wife drops in comes off a bit slight, but that's made up for by a strong finale.

Probably one of the best portraits of an egomaniac artist.

One of those all-in-one movies: a little romance, a little comedy, a little drama, a little bit of tragedy. None of the pieces really rises above the average (although Sidney is one of my favorite actresses of the era); there's just enough to make it a worthwhile watch.

Enjoyed the easy pacing of this as a woman slowly realizes that she has made a mistake in marrying an alcoholic who still has feelings for a previous flame. Sylvia Sydney is quite good in her role, and the film does a nice job intertwining both comic and tragic elements.

Things end up getting complicated for a newly married couple when the man's ex turns up and changes things. Fredric March and Sylvia Sidney is the couple and Adrianne Allen is March's love interest. Cary Grant plays a brief part as Sidney's date as the two are going through a modern open phase in their relationship. Sylvia Sidney is absolutely stunning as always, and March does okay as her husband, but the production lacks something to make it anything special and this becomes just a slow drama.
