A concert film with a somewhat stunted attempt at style and a problematic issue with technique. The worst part is easily the coverage of the music which is composed as though there was some contractual demand to cut evenly between each band member every 5 seconds. It lacks a narrative flow that aligns with the music. When Kirk starts shredding on Ride the Lightning, in what is possibly my favorite metal solo ever, this movie thinks that for whatever reason I should be watching James play rhythm.

This is not a movie, and I didn't rate it as one. This is basically Metallica live in concert, but with a little bit of a music video feel to it due to the a few cuts away from the arena. I'm a fan, so I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I was nodding my head and singing along plenty, really enjoying it. It reminded me just how much I like their music. Their repertoire is gigantic. They could've played 15 different songs than the ones they did and it would still be the greatest soundtrack ever!

Great concert, but don't expect more than that.

Hard to evaluate. A really poor movie, but a pretty decent music video for some great music.

I'm rating this as a movie because that's what I sat down to watch. Utterly disappointing.

Some brief horror movie bits between not-good live versions of metallica songs, the band looked as bored as I was.

pretty decent performances actually, although i'm sure there's a fair amount of digital meddling on the soundtrack. i loved the stage sets; 2013's Metallica is extremely aware of what they are: an act. a very good one still, actually. the story is lame but the kid is likeable enough.

Starting at Cyanide, the story and the stage show start to get entertaining.

What a strange mixture: A bunch of epic songs, 4 guys who are clearly getting too old to play these songs and a completely random story about some kind of roadie looking for some kind of thing. This must have been hell for the guy in the editing room. If you are in desperate need for some Metallica footage, I recommend the Live in Seattle dvd's: WITH walrus moustache, WITH leather pants, WITH Newsted.

Layering Trip's mysterious, viscerally violent quest over the top of those songs puts a graphic, macabre exclamation point on Metallica Through the Never. It is indeed a trip--an hour-and-a-half journey into a sonic maelstrom full of angst and anger, cacophony and coffins. (pluggedin.com)

Wow, as I have heard like 3 Metallica songs before watching this movie, now, after watching it - I want to see Metallica live, yeah!

Very underrated. If you like Metallica you'll love this. Fun Fact: I met Robert Trujillo at a screening for this film.

I felt a bit let down by the setlist, all in all they're playing about 15 songs (and where's "through the never"!?). The interwoven plot is visually appealing, but it doesn't add anything, except when it descends into pure violence, which is the only fitting setting for this music. However, if you're a Metallica fan and overcome the initial weirdness of watching a metal-concert on an imax-3d-screen (as opposed to being there yourself), you will definitely enjoy it for the time being.

as a concert less than 70, as it's less than average Metallica, as an movie - less than 30, so, the result is less than 50

not huge on metallica, but can't deny that this was a lot of fun. the performance was good, the meshing of the music-videoesque story line worked well. probably would rate it slightly lower if i hadn't watched it in 3d as this sort of thing relies solely on the overall spectacle for its entertainment value.
