Somehow the breathtaking climax with great use of 'Can't Stop Loving You' doesn't quite lift this movie up to where it needs to be. Which is too bad, because with better storytelling this could have been a classic. It could have class. It could have been a contender. It could have been 'Ghost in the Shell' meets 'Metropolis' (Fritz Lang's, that is).

I think the children are drawn somewhat poorly. I also think the story would have benefited by having them be slightly older. It should be noted that I couldn't write myself out of a box and honestly I'd have trouble drawing one.

feels like an anime rip off of blade runner, which even though regurgitated with humongous eyes and other assorted unnaturally proportioned body parts is still a pretty good story.

This film has far more personality than it has any right to. I can't remember a thing about the story, and the characters looked stupid, but the way everything was put together with the dixie-hokum soundtrack just made it transfixing. It's a Japanese New Orleans crazy mash-up love-child that somehow feels chill, homely and familiar. St. James Infirmary was amazing.

Not entirely coherent, but visually astounding. Osamu Tezuka's designs look wonderful here.

The animation is beautiful (and a good ode to Ozuka), but the movie just feels like it lacks something. The CG with animation is okay, but I've never really been comfortable with it.

An animation marvel, with many refreshing designs and backgrounds, although there is little else to hold these things together. Its plot is coherent enough, but takes a strangely dark turn for what seemed to be a light-hearted feature. The main flaw is the lack of character development, which leaves the viewer wondering what happened off-screen so they can make sense of the relationship of the characters by the end of the movie. Overall, not a satisfying conclusion following a poor set-up.

Such a simple but grandiose film. The world, which is set in the distant future, is huge, mechanical (in a futuristic fashion) and seemingly endless. The adventure of the main characters is interesting and has a few twist and turns. One of the best anime of its time.

This was quite strange for me, the entire main part of the movie just seemed to have scenarios occur to try and build this world, but not really make any of it truly matter in the end. The ending was pretty good, however, and in the end avoids this movie from being bad.

The glorious final sequence made up quite a few points, and the use of music is brilliant throughout. Honestly, though, for the most part, this is just kind of boring, and the CGI mixes awkwardly with the 2D animation whenever it shows up (itself kind of awkward in some of the more stylized character models). Overall, it's a mixed bag, artistically appreciable but not all that entertaining.

All pomp and no circumstance, Metropolis still manages to cement its place in pop culture through its palpable ambition and desire to be something great even if it ends up out of its grasp. The animation quality is incredible and combines natural and digital sources better than nearly anything else. Expect to get lost in the visuals, not the plot. Appropriate nods to Fritz Lang's Metropolis in themes and architecture, 50s animation, and film noir although they're only the sum of their parts.

It's been a month since I saw this and I still have that fucking Ray Charles song in my head. Oh yeah and the little girl turning into the Terminator near the end was hilarious. I give it a 50 because it's anti-Semitic given that the main bad guy has a huge hooked nose.

Metropolis is a terrific little anime, although I would have liked to have seen a few parts of the script flushed out a bit more. Still, I love the movie, but it's the ending that makes it for me. Tima's question at the end pretty much sums up the purpose of the movie. This is a really nice exploration into the nature of humanity thing from a cyberpunk film standpoint.

It deviates from the original plot a decent amount, which is probably for the best. Taking on a classic like Metropolis is a pretty ballsy move. I like the animation style of this movie, but it is admittedly eccentric, so that probably won't be for everyone. It's a little slow-moving at times, but things really pick up toward the end, especially when all the mass destruction comes into play.

A beautifully animated adult Japaneses anime that explores the bonds of love and friendship and what it means to be human. The only draw back to this film is that while the boy and girl were interesting characters they didn't really seem that well developed.I would have liked to see there friendship explored a little more. The ending really ties up the main themes of this film up nicely while leaving a little bit open to interpretation. Two Thumbs Up.

This Osamu Tezuka graphic novel based anime present audiences the creativity and visually stunning beauty of a futuristic city where humans and robots "co-inhabit". The best scene, I think, is where the protagonist tries to save his friend, Tima, from the destruction of Metropolis with the song by Ray Charles, "I Can't Stop Loving You". Very strong and emotional. Again thanks to Osamu Tezuka, the godfather of anime.

It's really a very good Movie.Nice animation an amazing futuristic style and lovely characters ( fifi for example ) makes this one worse to watch ( even more than one time ).The ending of that movie is so impressive. If you like animes and scifi you will like Metropolis. Otherwise you might be disapointed.

This futuristic Babel tower story starts with chaotic background and animation, but ends up with decent one. The main focus is on human characters and they are stunning. Unfortunately the combination of CGI effects and robotic animation with highly cartoonish human figures does not work good. Story is slow and most of the time anemic. Only the brilliant ending saves a lot.

Rewatched this because I forgot the whole movie. What a treat! Although the story is sometimes hard to follow the characters and their development are superb and don't forget about the music score! Pure jazz :) also loved the ending. Wasn't expecting the girl to turn evil that fast and take revenge for all the machines and forget about love etc. In short: Great anime! Must see for anime movie junkies.

While the Tintin-esque style and the animation are both outstanding, the story is ambitious and it takes place in an extremely rich world with loads of depth, it just didn't entertain me. Nothing about the story interested me aside from the robot aspect, and even that is far too similar to The Matrix.

I'm biased in my love for this movie since I love robots (especially androids), Tezuka, and anime. While the story is based off something old that was inspired by something even older, the discourse is completely fresh and original. Trying to tell a futuristic story from the viewpoint of people in the fifties isn't easy when the future being portrayed is today (and doesn't match up). Rintaro does a great job at making sure this happens.
