Sometimes feelsy as hell (the character's incredibly hostile relationship with her vulnerable mother), sometimes it's an absolute hoot to watch (any of the film-making scenes, and Turturro's scenes, and especially the film-making with Turturro scenes). I look forward to Buy and Turturro getting absolutely snubbed this awards season.

I take this movie as an elegy for the past generations, for ancient and noble values (latin teacher mother, industrial society, social-realist movies) and in general for the heaviness of the time passing by. Apart from that, yes, it is a sincere and elegant family portrait which tries to grasp the Zeitgeist of our time but for me it offers nothing special and will remain as a decent movie.

Not quite sure of the impact of the family situations -- the divorce stuff is out of place --, but the film-within-a-film about labor, strike and these workers losing their jobs after the arrival of a new business' owner seems near brilliant, specially when Turturro forgets a line or completely loses his mind during a scene or tells Margherita he (kinda) worked with Kubrick. Strong film about arrogance -- the filmmaker never stops filming, the brother abandons his job --, not so much about loss.

Mia madre [My Mother] (2015) a simple family observation of a film director who has to cope with her mother slowly dying while she has to focus on filming and handling temperamental actors. Realistic movie that hold back probable a little too much to really nail the heart. The one to really stand out in this French/Italian film was American actor John Turturro, sort of serving as the clown, the one to break the film out of it's mundane tone.

"Acting is a waste of time and a waste of a life. I want out of here, man! I wanna go back to reality! ...Take me back to reality."

Quietly moving and often very funny. Few handles death in the family better than Moretti.
