The insinuated pederasty is a pioneering theme for its time, and the film manages to create interesting psychological drama in some parts. Still, in the end it's a melodrama and a negligible footnote in the oeuvre of a master of Dreyer's caliber.

There he is, in 1924, the Dreyer of control and sudden burst of emotion. Not quite to the level we'll see later, but still reminds one of a master musician willingly in control of emotion and expression. The masterpiece by the old man, the frivolous young. This might be better, or should be better than I think it is.

"Many critics have chosen to downplay the film's gay subtext, but to do so would deny the power of Dreyer's fastidious attention to the polarity of love's vicissitudes." - Eric Henderson

How could he make such a picture in 1924?? One of the purest examples of what it means to love someone. Not as perfectly photographed as the rest of Dreyer's oeuvre which brings it down. Great use of close-ups like usual

Dreyer's first masterpiece was still 4 years off, but Michael finds the great Dane in fine form, refining techniques that would later be used to stunning effect, such as his arguably peerless use of close up and affective framing, which are showcased here in several scenes, especially the one involving Michael painting the eyes of Zamikoff. It's a moody chamber drama about art, aging and desire that is subtle and moderately complex and functions as a satisfying precursor to his classic works.

Beautiful shot, subtle elegant chamber play with a surprising (implicit) homosexual relationship at its center.
