Though I needed English subtitles, it was very satisfying. Several naval battles. Many great tense moments. An amazing man caught in a clash of politics, responsible for saving his country several times. The fame it brought proved to be his undoing. Based on true events, the story is incredible, engaging & entertaining. The wife Sanne Langelaar & siren Aurélie Meriel were gorgeous. The real prince was a disgrace. Frank Lammers as Ruyter was awesome! Charles Dance was great as the English king.

Wow, what a film. I cannot believe it was made with a 'shoe string budget' of 8 million Euro. Reiné paints his canvas of the Dutch 'Golden Age' 17th century highly dynamic and in rich colors. It's easy to see he put his heart and soul into this project,a delight to see.I watched this film about 100 meters away from the place the brothers de Witt were murdered by Orangist savages, felt strange. All in all MdR is epic defined and entertains immensely. Reiné had a dream and went for it. Well done

I did enjoy the Dutch epic Michiel de Ruyter (aka Admiral) (2015), but there was something very artificial about the whole thing. Too much dreamy computer graphics to really feel like one was in a damn war. Had some solid casting with the criminally underused Charles Dance & Rutger Hauer, along with Frank Lammers as the fat and ugly hero. Could have had more political intrigues considering all the directions Europe where pulling, but Admiral preferred to play it romantically safe.

Some really good and powerful scenes here. Cinematography is quite good and the story is interesting. Overall a good film, that is perhaps a bit too lengthy. Some characters at times also feel a bit one-dimensional or like caricatures, but it still makes for some emotional scenes. Very well executed film.

Well-crafted, exciting war epic has unmistakable MASTER AND COMMANDER overtones (even if the perspective is different to say the least!) but it’s consistently engrossing, balancing a sufficient (if simplistic) overview of the socio-political circumstances with some thrilling and viscerally exciting battles at sea. Slight sagging in the final third well and truly forgiven due to generally fine performances: Lammers is a great seedy hero, and Dance's sleazy King Charles steals all of his scenes.
