(after repeat viewings) Pleasantly surprised by this debut from Hill. Essentially a plotless movie, yet one with genuine character work at its core and I loved the low-key 4:3 photography from Christopher Blauvelt. Nice soundtrack and score from the always reliable Reznor/Ross duo. Watching this in a theatre packed with roughly 100 young ardent skaters only added to the unique experience.

The ultra-nostalgic atmosphere and sharp comedic sensibility make Mid90s basically undeniable. It feels like a perfect film upon first viewing, but in hindsight could've used some further developing to the relationship dynamics between Stevie and his family. Everything that was on screen was great, though. Jonah will be a force.

I wasn't expecting the seemingly abrupt ending, but it was a fitting one I guess. Good performances from the lead and Lucas Hedges as well. I thought this was overall a nice little experiment from Jonah Hill. I enjoyed watching all of the kids goof off and banter off of each other. I didn't really grow up in the 90s but I did grow up with kids who talked like that. It's just a short honest look at growing up. I also liked the Reznor/Ross score. Good movie.

Clearly the work of a first time director. Hill tries to jam basically everything he's ever liked into this film. The kids really carry this film. I could've watched them fucking around for hours. The ending really isn't where I would've taken it (I don't think this film needed such a climax ending), but the poignant moment between the brothers is a nice, although a little cliched, touch.

An excellent debut by Jonah Hill, full of heart, nostalgia & maturity. He does an amazing job in regards to the film's music & writing. Suljic plays the troubled teen very well, but the real star of the film is Na'Kel Smith. His subdued portrayal of Ray will go down as one of 2018's most underrated. This is a testament to Hill's writing, making every dialogue and interaction feel natural. Though I really wished it would have been 30 minutes longer as I was so invested by the characters.

"Don't fucking thank people, they'll think you're gay." A movie like this absolutely panders directly to my tastes. It's a funny and slick screenplay delivered by investment-worthy characters, that doesn't even have to rely on a whole lot happening, exploring a specific period and place in time. I bought into this, hard. Sure it's nostalgia porn but it's MY KIND of nostalgia porn. Lucas Hedges gets to flex some serious muscle here in a killer secondary performance, and Sunny Suljic is a beast.

Jonah Hill's directorial debut captures a time period pretty well, and luckily, doesn't bog itself down by being a PSA of bad behaviour. But the film could have been strengthened by filling out the characters around Stevie. When this film ended, a woman yelled out, "that was it?"

Spoiler Talk: As everyone mentions this feels very authentic from the uncomfortable abuse taking place at home to the hierarchy of the friend group to the clothes, music and scene right up until the car crash where afterwards reality just dissolves evidently and the mother that was upset her son was out too late makes a complete reversal and looks endearingly at the group of guys that just got him hospitalized in a drunk driving accident including the driver who evidently faces no consequences?

Growing up as a skater in the mid 90s, this was obviously right in the sweet spot for me. Ray was the real standout here. Has a really nice authentic feel overall. The actual skate scenes are undoubtedly the best ever put in an actual movie, and the in-movie skate video is pitch perfect.

A slice of life film is built upon buying into the relationships between the characters since generally not a whole lot happens. This is a good example of subgenre. The chemistry between the friends is really cool, it feels natural. Sometimes it's nice to have things explored more deeply but I actually think that the unspoken words spoke volumes and it didn't really need it. The relatively short runtime means it doesn't overstay itself; we get just enough. Very emotional with a bomb soundtrack.

Strong performances by a well-rounded cast only make the strong, believable characters feel more human than they already do. The grungy, gritty atmosphere is well-captured, the dialogue feels authentic and features plenty of 90's slang, & the style never feels forced. At its core, it aims to be an unabashedly honest character study & portrait of what teen life in the 90's was like, and it hits the mark much more than it misses. It's definitely not without flaws, but is well worth watching.

Has its moments of nuanced angst, childlike wonder, and emotional weight, but an equal number of "honest" moments that are just uncomfortable or painful to watch and serve little purpose other than to be uncomfortable or painful, and made me feel bad for the actor instead of the character.

A huge part of this film plays on the viewers want for a throwback film that represents a time that was much different than today and it wasn't all that long ago. Hill does a great job recreating the era of the 90s skate scene and creates interesting characters to set within this world. Sunny Suljic was a great lead as Stevie "Sunburn" and played his coming of age brilliantly.A solid debut as a director from Hill.Going forward in his career he may want to give a little more closure to his films

This movie is now in my Top 5 of 2018. Jonah Hill joins a master-class of filmmaking with this one. Even though multiple non-actors were used in some of the major roles, it made it even more authentic. Just a great little snapshot of one boys world, growing up in the Mid-90s.

This is pretty much the more wholesome, romantic sequel to Kids with a lot of Van Sant and Linklater influence. The writing is a bit better than Kids, and better executes the imperative teen sex scene. Great soundtrack--absolute fantastic use of music in a film. Jonah Hill is a true filmmaker, but next time he should collaborate on the script. Skate scenes with Morrissey and the Mamas and the Papas is different, but very much welcomed.

As with most A24 movies, this is a well done, arthouse style movie, similar to Moonlight, with an equally unrelatable (to me) group of people. Kind of weird watching Sunny play a 4th grader one weekend (The House with a Clock in the Wall) and then this drug, sex, booze, smoking, and skating obsessed kid the next. That all being said, the movie was somewhat enjoyable and I wasn't as bored as I sometimes am in these kind of movies. (Shot in 4:3 but displayed in 16:9, ick.)

Aimless depiction of teen life in the 90s era often feels like a somewhat neutered paraphrase of KIDS; 'shot-on-videotape' aesthetic works to the film's benefit and Hill proves he can draw realistic, improvisational performances from his actors. Lack of cohesive plotting becomes frustrating after a while, especially when a couple of major life shaking events are dropped in without explanation. Hedges delivers an impressively intense performance, but why no hint of a back story for his character?

Why was this film made? You can describe the literal things in it, but it amounts to a hollow experience. The protagonist is small, quiet, bold. His brother drinks orange juice and physically abuses him. Halfway thru, character dynamics/backstory are revealed through a monologue which creates the semblance of moral clarity. Next scene - all momentum is ignored. This says nothing about the 90s beyond surface aesthetics. At best, amusing. At worst, horrible performances and phoned-in emotions.

I think the nostalgia angle of this film is a little over-emphasized. I was already in my mid-20's by the mid-90's, and I have never skateboarded, but there's a lot I related to in this film because, at heart, it's a nice portrayal of what being a teenaged boy is like for so many people. It creates it's era vividly, but it's really about those initial moves away from family and towards becoming your own person.

There has never been a good movie made about skating/skateboarding. This is no exception. Then, to film it in 1.33:1 aspect ratio just makes it even more unwatchable. No film should ever be shot in anything lower than 1.77:1. Jonah Hill should stick to acting because he sucks at directing.

I'm biased with rating this one so high, but it really hits me where I feel - I was trying to skate around this kid's age, I was trying all kinds of stuff and was like a sponge. It's not a perfect movie and some character progression isn't really progression but the vibe is great. It's a shallow movie but what the fuck are you if not shallow at 12. You think that things that are shallow rule, are cool, are something to be looked upon. Would watch again, maybe with a beer and joint this time.

Honest, nostalgic, sharp-edged but overall warmhearted slice of life drama. Hill and the young cast do great work, sensitively portraying the growing pains of adolescents amidst the drop-out sub-culture of the era and the long hot summers that went on forever. Hill broaches good empathy with his characters even given the sparse screenplay. Things were slow-paced and intimate back then. Whole afternoons crept by on the walk between places and the rest of the world might as well not have existed.

Jonah Hill's directorial debut works mostly due to natural writing and acting on display. In a film about growing up in the 90's, these characters feel real and the frustrations and growing pains they endure also feel real. The movie is at its best when it drifts away from angsty cliches and instead allows its characters to interact and talk through their troubles in their own inarticulate ways.

Confident directing debut from Jonah Hill; he's especially good with fitting music with imagesf. It's a nice period piece with believable performances from the young cast. It reminded me of Shane Meadow's "This is England" and there were a couple of scenes that felt oddly familiar. It's definitely worth a watch for anyone interested in 90's and skater culture, but the story could have used a bit more digesting as it doesn't seem to amount to pretty much anything.

I like the concept and the cinematography. But Jonah Hill is neither a good writer nor a good director. I don't know if the dialogue was too forced or if those kind of lines did not come naturally to these actors, but every time someone spoke they reminded you that you're watching a movie right now, with actors saying someone's dialogue and a screenwriter who is trying to tell you something or advance the plot. It feels like they just hung out and shot some shit, but didn't try that hard.

An impressive directorial debut from Jonah Hill. You don't realize how conventional the material is, a young kid finding his place within a hidden subculture (essentially the storyline every other youth movie since the 60s), as Hill's Larry Clark-isms still pack a punch. And there's something about this family's dysfunction that we can't quite tease out and resolve. It remains out of reach.
