Charles Grodin has a deadpan comedic talent that is unparelleled in the industry. Robert DeNiro is by far the best at what he does, which is namely, being Robert DeNiro. Together, they make a great team. A unique story and great acting. A very good film I need to go see again.

Despite a mediocre plot ("escort this dude..."), baffling title and repetitive structure, Midnight Run gets away with its sins by having Robert De Niro, who tries hard and is given time to grow into his character and build a rapport with Grodin. And a half-decent De Niro is worth his weight in gold. His charisma and delivery kept me watching despite some tenuous scenarios. Props to Grodin too. Nobody else really added much or mattered in the long run. Odd-couple-buddy-road-trip-police-comedy.

A little long and full of implausibly convenient scenarios, but DeNiro carries what could have been another cheeseball mismatched buddy story in a "'Lethal Weapon', only with the comedy/action ratio flipped" kind of way. Great supporting turn by Grodin, whose underplayed turn as a sincere, white collar Robin Hood acts as the perfect balance to DeNiro's wronged tough guy. The constantly shifting allegiances builds genuine suspense in the film's final act before ending on exactly the right note.

Of all the action/comedies made in the 80's (and yes, there were plenty), this is among the best, if not the number one best. Barely a second of film is wasted, with more twists and turns and fun scenes packed into it than any three other similar movies. Besides two terrific leads who play off each other beautifully, there's a great cast of supporting characters. Even the hokey parts are good, though the freight train scene pushes the corn-o-meter into the red a little bit.

A tight script elevated by perfect casting. Farina pulls off a mobster so genuinely over-the-top violent he easily flips from funny 2 scary; Pantoliano's tailor-made 2 play a shyster bondsman; & Grodin & Deniro hit it out of the park as the kind of odd couple pairing we've seen b4. The big difference here is that the changes in their relationship never ring false. The performances r always funny, but the sincere & difficult moments that make the friendship plausible r never sacrificed 4 a laugh.

One of the better buddy action comedies out there. I was too young to appreciate it in its time, but it seems that everybody who did rates this as one of their favorites of all time. I imagine it would have had more of an impact on me if I hadn't seen hundreds of other buddy movies before. Still, though, a great movie and one of my favorite De Niro comedy roles.

It's PLANES TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES meets GET SHORTY (especially with hilarious Farina in the cast); it may just be the passage of time since, but film feels oddly familiar and contrived, scoring best in the mid-section when the tension between Grodin and De Niro heats up (with Ashton's amusing running gag a highlight); there's a curiously cluttered flat-footedness at the finale as all the players are awkwardly dragged on stage, and Brest doesn't seem to quite know how to handle them.

I couldn't help but be reminded of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. But where that movie was a steaming hunk of shit, this was a fun ride with respectable comedy and drama. Midnight Run may not be the best or most memorable film of it's kind. But there is more than enough humour, action and chemistry between the characters to make this an enjoyable and rewatchable experience. The unlikely pairing of Robert De Niro & Charles Grodin are surprisingly great together and they bounce off one another brilliantly. Yaphet Kotto is a worthy mention too. And whilst this may also not be Robert De Niro's finest work, I think he is both underrated and underused is comedic roles.

Deniro is great in this, but much like a Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, Grodin annoyed the hell out of me. Although, at times he did provide a glimpse of a more subtle way to approach the character, but not nearly enough of the time. Its entertaining, but it does seem to drag on a bit. If you like Deniro, then watch this, if not, there may not be enough here to justify your viewing.

The plot and pacing, as well as some good performances, make for a fun time. Lots of great stuff here, but it couldn't quite deliver on the excellent setup. Classic. I had seen this a long time ago but barely remembered a thing about it. Very funny and great characters. The only real fault that I can give it is that it was a little too silly. I know that that was kind of the point but I felt that it was just a little too silly and too perfect. Everything seemed to happen a little too exactly the way that it needed to happen. Not to the level that would be really annoying, just enough to keep it from being a truly amazing film.

Really liked De Niro's character a lot. He had sides and he wasn't just a basic tough guy (though at times he was that too, of course). The progression of things between the two main characters felt natural, too, and it wasn't shoehorned in as usually happens with this type of plot. These kinds of movies are just so chill and relaxing to watch. Great road trip stuff, diners, cop chases, mobsters + a Danny Elfman soundtrack.

This is one of the best action comedies I have seen. A sort of Trains Planes and Automobiles with menace. The script is the real winner here, with fast paced dialogue that appears ad-libed, and superbly delivered by the entire ensemble. Although a long film, the pace rarely falls, and throughout there is a sense of "what the heck is going to happen next" ? De Niro is superb throughout and delivers a scene with his daughter (who should get a special mention) that is pure brilliance. Great fun.

Takes a while to get going but the film gets good payoffs by taking things nice and easy at first. Comes across at times familiar and others quite oddball. Not everything hits the mark, but most of its charm is sourced from a deliberate awkwardness and incongruous tonal inflections. Oftentimes bizarre Danny Elfman score really does a lot for this mood. Ate a single magic mushroom beforehand, to be just a little more engaged; no regrets, credibility be damned.

Hands down one of the best buddy movies to come out of the 80s. Robert De Niro gives one of his best performances as a burned out & bitter bounty hunter who hits the big score when he has to escort a fussy mob accountant (Charles Grodin) to LA. All sorts of high jinks ensure as the mob, FBI and rival bounty hunters try to thwart them. Beneath all the action is a heartwarming story about a man who recovers from a failed life. All this set to a rare blues score by Danny Elfman.

I do think it gets a little repetitive towards the end of the second act. They really should have cut 15 minutes or so out of the movie (basically all of the stuff around Arizona). Also Elfman's score is rather dated and not in a fun way. But the casting and premise really do work in a major way. Overall this should be well worth your time.

I'd be giving this a 95 if the Duke wasn't so ungodly annoying during most of the movie. His nagging at Jack to be healthier and open up would have worked better if he'd established a better connection, but as it stands their dynamic was only just passable. The story (and soundtrack) gets very repetitive and predictable, but the comedy works well, the idea of a good cop turned bounty hunter plays well with the fight against corruption, and De Niro never disappoints.

The remarkable chemistry is 90% of the point here. Living in a time where De Niro has made dozens of shitty comedies, it's easy to forget what a strange decision it was to cast him in a comedy in the 1980's. Even more remarkably, the temptation to pair him with a bombastic comedy star was resisted. These two play off each other masterfully. Neither of these men try to be funny. They trust that embodying these characters and letting them interact will produce the results.

Best road movie ever? Honestly, I can't imagine this not being in anyone's top 3. The pacing and energy in this movie are completely off the charts and you can tell everyone had a great time making it. I mean, not that I would ever consider De Niro snobby, but up until the late 90's, he's always made what seemed like educated choices when picking parts and I'm sure he read the script and was like: where do I sign? Martin Brest just had one of the saddest endings to a film career ever.

If it were a tad shorter i feel like this would probably get a higher score for me. De Niro and Grodin chemistry is definitely the best part and it makes me wish they had done more movies together. The running gags weren't too over the top and just funny enough to where they didn't get too old. All together a solid mock buddy cop/mob flick.
