As a rabid WWII enthusiast, I have a hard time holding myself from darting to the theater to see anything that is remotely related, even resorting to going to the theater alone. While this one certainly is entertaining, it's too close to the droning drama of "Pearl Harbor," with only a peppering of action, but it's hard to not be forgiving with naval battles, there are only so many strafe runs and depth charges you can depict without becoming a boring cocophany of splashes.

It's almost as ridiculous as a Cannon film from the 80s, just without the fun. The characters are so flat, you don't care for any of them just for one second. But even if you did, you wouldn't remember em in the next scene. Oh, and why does it look like a fuckin videogame? For 100 mio bucks? Fair enough. But hey, maybe I must have walked out of it at Cannes first to realize its greatness.

To think young people watching this will think this is what it was like is shameful. I wonder when we will see a film telling the true story of how the US not only pursued but provoked Japan into a war and in turn gained US entry into WWII

Spectacular visuals but after about 15 mins I'm embarrassed to say that I was quite bored. Embarrassed since many people lost their lives that day. I liked that both the Japanese and American sides were depicted but ultimately they were both caricatures (American cowboy vs. Japanese honor). A lot of the action scenes seemed improbable too---I'd imagine IRL there were a lot more planes going down rather than dodging bullets. Nice credits song. Fav scene: anytime Yamamoto is discussing intrigue.

I would have rated this higher but there were too many characters and it was hard to follow at some points. But knowing this was a history lesson made it pretty cool. Very likely a turning point in World War 2.

Based on real events my ass! According to this film Americans were so friendly but Japanese attacked Americans for no reason. On top of that if Japanese attack to an American naval base it's a bad thing, but if Americans attack to the cities and kill civilians it's okay. Because when Japanese attack people die, but when Americans attack only the ground shakes. Yet less disgusting than Fury or Hacksaw Ridge in terms of objectivity.

This film is beyond awful. Flat characters, horrible dialogue, and some of the worst CGI I have seen in a long while. Everything looks like it was shot on a greenscreen and nothing is exciting.

Very much an Emmerich movie, meaning more explosions than characterization, but the dedication to accuracy allows the battles to offer quite a few thrills.

saw this with my pops, this type of shit is his jam and he thought it was rubbish. Ed Screen should be guatanamoed for his disrespectful attempt at an American accent.

Midway is the definition of generic cash in military propaganda movie. I've seen enough Roland Emmerich movies to know what I was getting into and it lived up to my expectations. I don't know how Ed Skrein landed himself the lead role here. His performance was like tepid water. There were moments where he acted cocky like his character demanded but everything in between wasn't good. There were some good performances from the American side but the Japanese side was flawless.

I like WW2 movies because I'm a big history buff, especially when it comes to that particular conflict. While Midway to me was way better than the romantic drama that Pearl Harbor was, it drags on too much and the initially impressive battle scenes become repetetive and less exciting. I'm also a bit tired of female characters in these movies just being there to hold the kids and cry in an effort to do nothing more but to milk some more sympathy for the male characters.

Terrible disservice to the men that fought in the Pacific during WW2. No historical accuracy, corny lines and apparently physics didn't apply to US aircraft. The CG is also distractingly awful. This movie tried to cover too much and doesn't give enough time to any component. I honestly can't think of a positive thing to say about this dumpster fire... no wait, how about burning aircraft carrier of a movie. Steer clear shipmate.

"One battle turned the tide of war." Based on Battle of Midway. This lasted from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942, when Americans fought Japanese with far fewer pilots & soldiers, but still managed to win, setting turning point in World War II. We follow number of people. Including Admiral Chester Nimitz who was commander of Pacific fleet. Wade McClusky was airplane pilot during battle & Edwin Layton was admiral who was part of intelligence team with aim of betraying the positions of Japanese.

Feels like a generic American war movie from 90'. When I saw the trailer, I feared that CGI will be bad. But I was very wrong. Some performances are so terrible that CGI is quite soothing for eyes despite its quality. Thus if they just cut all dialogue out and put an ad somewhere for WWII vet association, this would be a great product. As a movie, having plot and poorly developed (and too many) characters, I cannot say the same.

The movie varies wildly depending who's on screen. If Wilson/Woody are talking, it's wonderful and intriguing. If the Japanese cast are on, it's serious and sharp. If Ed Skrein is on (which is most of it), it's painful. The early greenscreen battles are horrible-looking, but the actual Midway runs are great, except for the stupid bomb into the rising sun on the deck nonsense. Barely worth a rental. 29/MAY/2023

I'll damn Midway with the faint praise that it's better than Pearl Harbour but it's still a disappointment overall. Skrein understandably takes most of the flak for his crap performance, but he's far from the only one with Harrelson, Quaid and Moore also terrible. The tale of Midway is certainly worth telling but with so much of the spectacle looking obviously CGI it's frustrating to compare it to Dunkirk and think of what could have been. Credit to the dive bombing scenes though. They were cool

I thought "midway" was the title, but it transpired it was a bet to Emmerich that no one would get further than that when watching it. I am all for recycling, but using the sets from Pearl Harbour, the script from Independence Day, and the CGI from the TIE fighters in Star Wars was a step too far. At least the film created some interest in guessing who the actors were under their grotesque make-up. Who the hell is Ed Skrein? if you want to change history, at least make the lead actor charismatic

Lmao Roland Emmerich = GOD OF RIDICULOUS CINEMA. german director makes what basically resembles what an actual 1940s-made US propaganda war film would have been had they had access to 2010s CG graphics. Bunch of rootem tootem fighter jet cowboys vs a bunch of honorable Japanese bad guys - fuckin epic. Dennis Quaid’s shingles deemed an important enough subplot to warrant mention in like ten different scenes. FOR THE PEAARLLLLL FUUUUCK YEA

Quitted mid way. I'm fine a superficial romp, but after the initial battle this is as mundane way to spend 100m$ as possible.

Don't know if the multiple characters experiences provide anything truly dramatic, but this is undeniably pretty engaging at its cinema spectacle thrills and not so much as far as war melodrama goes. Effects seem neat, good-looking and better well-shot and put together than in most war flicks. Patriotic shit is also Emmerich's mark, but I'm all in for this kind of naive, well-spirited, not very profound or multi-layered pop filmmaking.

I watched this in the movie theater and I enjoyed the fighting scenes which were fun. The plot would have been dismissed as "generic" but since it's based on a true story, it was really something different. The acting... did I mention great air fight scenes?

Emmerich has always directed the most outrageous B-movie bullshit with a solemn seriousness that made me think that he either doesn't understand American cinema or that he understands it too well. So for another round of hero worship he somehow convinced a studio to actually produce a straight-ahead WWII battle film in comics-and-politics drenched 2019. And it's the best one he ever made - well-researched and exciting, honoring all parties involved, with the Pacific blue always on the horizon.

The performances are truly below average by most of the leads. A bit melodramatic. However, the story was nevertheless a moving, and heroic one. I would watch it again despite its faults.

This is just plain awful. Filled with caricatures of how awesome the Americans are and literally unbelievable flying skills while the Japanese are overly arrogant. Acting is horrible but especially Patrick Wilson and Ed Skrein stands out, the latter for his ridiculous portrayal of Dick Best. The CGI battles scenes are nicely done but do become repetitive and are not enough to carry the little over 2 hours of run time. "This one is for Pearl" BARF

Makes 'Pearl Harbor' feel like a David Lean movie. Ed Skrein delivers the worst performance of the century.
