It's such an odd decision to remake King Kong with a smaller ape, but a ballsy one that pays off. It doesn't have the operatic grandeur of Kong (my God, what does?) but it competes as the human story is better. Ben Johnson is a more charismatic actor than the entire Kong cast put together.

Funny old movie. A sort of Kingkong movie, this time the monkey is not so big, nice to see.

Limp play on themes and ideas of KING KONG, though toned down presumably for a family audience. Harryhausen's ground breaking effects work is impressive, creating real empathy for the gorilla, but the movie takes so long to get where it's going (and insists on repeating itself ad nauseum; we get it, the animal is being exploited and this isn't going to end well!) that it ends up a bit of a snooze.

It's fun to think of Mighty Joe Young as a sequel to Son of Kong with Carl Denham leading a second life on the West Coast running night clubs far away from NY. While the animation, SFX and Joe Young in general are fantastic I never really like the way they portrayed the girl. She just yells at him when he's in trouble or ordering him around. We never see them "hanging out" or anything.

It is better directed than Son of Kong, and Harryhausen's effects were certainly an obvious advance on the original Kong, but story wise, and especially in terms of subtext, MJY has very little going for it. It is redeemed by two great scenes---one in a nightclub and the other outside a burning orphanage--that almost justify a higher score.

Once kidnapped, transported to america and exploited, at the merest hint of dissent the choices here are limited to imprisonment & execution or sending back to africa. king kong for kids.

Joe looks very impressive for the time, but the simplistic story and honestly mediocre to bad acting makes it pretty obvious why it never achieved acclaim over King Kong.

OK, really. At least entertaining than the films of its time. But it needed more action. But the remake is much better.

One of the greats and easily as good as King Kong.

Great to see one of these type adventure films again. Had already been a long time since the King Kongs of 1933. Exceptionally awesome stop-motion and absurd scenarios to put this giant gorilla in. That strongman sequence with who's who of pre-TV boom pro-wrestling naturally appealed to me. I think I would have liked it more had the plot not been a show biz one, but they really packed in a lot of action, to the point there was so much going on that it was almost overwhelming toward the end.
