A highly styled 'genre' film which can perhaps be seen as a pastiche of all gangster movies. Tom Reagan is the laconic anti-hero of this amoral tale which is also, paradoxically, a look at morals within the criminal underworld of the 1930s. Two rival gangs vie for control of a city where the police are pawns, and the periodic busts of illicit drinking establishments are no more than a way for one gang to get back at the other. Black humour and shocking violence compete for screen time as we question whether or not Tom, right-hand man of the Irish mob leader, really has a heart. (imdb)

This is a tremendous neo-noir movie. Dark, gritty, and unflinchingly sadistic in all the right places. Top notch acting, directing, and, of course, since it's a Coen brothers movie, writing. Byrne does an absolutely stunning job, and all the major players are completely on top of their game--I simply can't find any fault in this movie, it is truly a masterpiece.

Even though his fate is the primary driver of the plot, Turturro's screen time is relatively minor. But he makes the most of it, and this may be my favorite performance of his. The dark comedy here is superb and there are tons of layers to the plot and thematic elements. I didn't really connect with Tom, however, which was a big sticking point.

An excellent film about the question of ethics. Also about hats (perhaps influenced by Chesterton's essay, "On Running After One's Hat"). And also, as I did not realise until 2018, a telling of the tale of Lancelot, Arthur and Guinevere, and specifically a remake of Bresson's LANCELOT DU LAC, whose visage-concealing helmets are here replaced by the aforementioned hats. Even the woods at Miller's Crossing resemble those where Lancelot brought the life of Mordred to an end (like a dumb animal).

This film is sheer Coen brother brillance. The humour is subtley placed throughout the film and it's hilarious. Byrne is especially amazing and so is Albert Finney. The dialog is smart, the story itself is complex but not unnecessarily confusing by any means. It's simply an excellent gangster flick that really captures the hidden humour in the life of it's characters.

Another great film from the Coens. All of their greatest strengths come to fruition: the great characters, the wonderfully convoluted plotting, the dark humor. It's not to any detriment that this movie is actually a bit more serious than all the other Coens I've seen so far. The meditation on morality and choices recalls such great works as The Godfather; in fact, Tom is quite a bit like Michael Corleone. The prohibition era setting is very well realized with great cinematography.

The Coens do a prohibition era gangster flick. Byrne comes off as impenetrable as the seemingly amoral antihero protagonist (his blank stare speaks volumes), but excellent acting (especially from Turturro), unbridled violence, great set pieces, and patent Coen Bros dark humor keep the film itself from being impenetrable. The "epic" hubris of the gangster films of Coppola and Scorsese is totally subverted by the bleak noirish tone and anti-crime meditation. "Look in your heart..."

Lots of names to remember to follow the immaculately crafted narrative and dialogue - and a film mostly about the breathing space between opportunism/planning and how loyalty and betrayal seem like two sides of the same coin; survival. Very engrossing and entertaining.

The cast is great, Turturro especially, and the opening scene is fantastic, but I feel like it thinks it's smarter than it is. Despite this, it had a couple hilarious moments and the mixture of noir and mobster films is cool.

I dug it. The atmosphere and cinematography are honestly incredible, and Gabriel Byrne is very good, as is John Turturo. Feels more like a drama than your typical Coen brothers film, but I guess that isn't necessarily bad. It isn't my favorite project from them, but its certainly a well made film and well worth a watch if you're a fan of these writers and/or the actors.

Succeeds in establishing mood and time, but when it comes to gangster films, Miller's Crossing lacks the epic aspect that "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas" possess. I still feel this one can stand on his own as a great crime film. It showcases once again the true talent the Coen Brothers have, one that has significantly improved over time.

Another great film by the masterful Coen Bros. I really enjoyed Miller's Crossing. Through about the first hour, I didn't really like the film, it just seemed that Byrne's character was idiotic, or just plain retarded. But it was in fact very smart what they decided to do with his character. It's a different kind of mobster movie, and this is a prime example of showing the skill of the Coen Bros. and their diversity. Great film.

When you turn on Miller's Crossing, the Coens immediately catapult you into a stylish, handsome world already waist-deep in a thick plot. From then on, not one marvelously-shot frame is wasted - it's all fast-talking, tense story. It's one of their more serious ventures, but it's also one of their best.

I think something I find with many of my favorite directors is their ability to take an iconic piece of music and make it such a great part of their film you think of the movie every time you hear it. The easy example would be Ride of the Valkyrie in Apocalypse Now. The Coens have done this more than once, but O Danny Boy here may be the best they have done. Just awesome.

The only thing that I can see wrong with Miller's Crossing is that there's a cold detachment that makes it hard to really care. I think that's present in a bunch of their movies, and that's why my opinion is sometimes middling with their movies. But this is interesting enough, with some great dialogue, and some beautifully shot scenes. Definitely worth a watch, but not especially brilliant by any means.

Well acted, and the dark humor hits in the right places, but I never really connected with the characters, or felt much concern about the outcome (which seems to be a recurring issue with the Coen Brothers dramatic and/or amoral films). Perhaps the nihilistic world and ultimate conclusion is what rubs me wrong at the core; the only nihilists I care about in a Coen Brothers film are the ones from The Big Lebowski.

What hits the viewer here is not the mastermind character of Tom: we already saw masterminds, and masterminds in noir. It's how fresh sounds the citationism of this film: so noir, so classic, and so refreshing in its characters study, in its over-the-top scenes that never cross the line inside a parody for one seconds only, but actually are a parody. It's manneristic, yes, but without became heavy-handed. Simply classy crafting by the Coens, a showcase of talent.

Stylish, brilliantly shot, well performed and with a water tight script, this is just another film in the Coen's collective work of brilliance. For me its the casting in this movie that lifts it to another level. Everyone fits their role perfectly, but manages to bring own unique non-stereotypical quality to their role aswell. This may not be the Coen's most surreal or enigmatic work, (although it does have its moments) but it is undoubtably one of the finest mobster flicks ever made.

Certainly a cut below the usual Coen gold for me. Felt a little bit forced at times, bogged down by dense uneventful dialogue and a plethora of characters that are less memorable than they are essential for the plot progression. There is still quite a bit of magic here, namely from Turturro and Freeman - who are given some of the darkly comedic touch of genius that the Coen's have trademarked. Worth a watch.

I was actually surprised to see the rather mixed reviews on this sight, as I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a morality play for all intents and purposes and the fact that Tom is a very morally "grey" worked in the favor of this film. Turtorro, Polito, and Finney were great in very well done roles. A beautifully shot, and nicely cast look at gangster life from the Coens. Punctuated with sharp stabs of violence, the film has an undercurrent of subtle humour coming from the assortment of colourful characters. High points for me were John Turturro's scheming bookie, Gabriel Byrne's calculating smart guy, and Albert Finney defending his home. If I had a criticism, it is perhaps that the whole thing is a bit "tidy", especially the dialogue. Very entertaining overall, and well worth watching.

'Miller's Crossing' is subtle in how it both compliments and subverts the tropes of the gangster genre. The film's dark sense of humor is both inconspicuous at times and ridiculous at others, resulting in a cool and oddball crime drama that has Coen written all over it.

A really cool classic film noir feel saturates this cohesive slow burn of a crime drama, with its drab 40s sets and suits, niche dialogue ("What's the rumpus?"), fiery character melodrama (see the climax of Tom's arc: "Look in your heart!" "What heart?"), and twisting plot (see Dane's rise to prominence). It's maybe a touch hard to follow at points, but it's so solidly acted (Turturro might be the highlight; see his pleading in the forest) and directed that that can be easily forgiven.

Deconstruction of the morality crime film, taking place not in any real world but on an art-deco stage set (and the artificial-seeming streets of New Orleans.) Miller's Crossing was slow at times but overall the movie told a really interesting and engaging story. Jon Polito, in one of his largest roles, portrays a gangster that is concerned with morality within his world of gangsters. He believes himself to be a man who knows the character of others very well but Albert Finney, who is fantastic, ignores Polito and pays the price for it by losing his status as boss. Basically a love triangle. But do not get fooled by it. This is much more than that. There is a lot of good acting, excellent strong script and dialogue and of course hat is giving a story of it's own (who wears it, who doesn't). Byrne is brains, Finney and Polito less clever bosses who replace their intelligence with a gun.

I figured I'd underrated this and that my score would go up on a re-watch, but the problems I had the first watch (mostly plot-related) were just replaced with other problems that I didn't notice before, like the ugly sound mix, Burwell's TV-movie-quality score, a weirdly celebratory, kinda juvenile depiction of violence (Finney's big scene seems designed to make the bros in the audience high-five each other, which is strange to say about a Coens movie) so my score ended up staying the same.

The creative story mixed with the superb art direction makes Miller's Crossing legitmately great, it just doesn't match up to a top-tier crime drama. It's certainly well done in the right that it gets the period, setting, and feel down pat, but at times the acting is a little strange and ultimately feels like it could have been better.
