Charming allegorical approach to the history of France before, during and after May 1968.

Sandwiched as it is between Au revoir, les enfants and Damage, Milou stands out as a mostly lighthearted look at a wealthy clan and their interaction after the death of their matriarch. Often funny and filled with memorable characters, Milou also captures some of the revolutionary spirit sweeping the country in its setting, 1968.

It's incredible: no matter what kind of film Malle brings us, he does it perfectly well. Well, this social satire is kind of exaggerated at some moments, but overall it's a heck of a good story. It reminds me some of Carlos Saura's early works.

A somewhat typical french family drama in the sense that nothing is typical. What I thought was brilliant are the clever juxtapositions that the film is full of. It's what makes it a hilarious comedy, more than it really is drama. Much credit has to go to JC Carrière for the ingenious script. Having said all that, there is a single shot in the film that kind of ruins everything.
