My 3 year old son loves the Minions. I asked him why. After a few seconds of scrunching up his tiny brow while tilting his head left and right he replied, "I can't remember." Like father, like son.

Every stand up comedian's nightmare is that they finally break through and get a starring role in a feature film and somehow it turns out to have less dialogue than this vehicle for characters whose biggest character trait is speaking gibberish.

This could have made for a mildly amusing short film, but after the 10 minute intro it becomes painfully clear the story is non-existent and what follows will be nothing but cheap gags and lowest common denominator humor. Also, the focus on England was weird, and reminded me of the flop MUPPETS MOST WANTED. Note: This made way too much fucking money and everyone who saw it should be ashamed of themselves.

Not a terrible film. But the Minions still aren't funny or particularly fleshed out characters. The Overkills are also fairly two-dimensional. Has none of the heart that Despicable Me sometimes had, because the focus is "humor" that shouldn't amuse anyone over the age of 14. But what do I know, I was in a theater full of adults, many of whom laughed their ass off whenever a minion said words they recognized in a random foreign language, like "Pesto" or "Que pasa". Top notch humor, I guess.

It's hard to review this movie, I love the minions and they were my favorite part of Despicable Me. But the story is simplistic to the point it's an obvious cash-grab. The slapstick humor is funny and sometimes downright hilarious. But you don't realize how important the father/daughter storylines from the first two movies are till you are left with one-dimensional humans. Voice acting was solid and honestly at 80 minutes, I didn't feel I wasted my time. It was cute. Just nothing special

Minions is an unnecessary movie that is designed to sell a bunch of merchandise and provide a middling distraction for children too young to know better. It offers nothing of value for adults, teenagers, and younger children - except, of course, a scene in which a character's neck is snapped for all to see. It's a dull, repetitive movie featuring stupid, annoying characters who don't have a shred of depth - or even much personality.

If you've seen the trailer... you've almost seen most of the highlights. The Minions, I think, are most funny in short bursts - they are a dumb comedic relief, but you need to space them between more serious scenes and use them as a foil for characters with serious objectives. For an hour and a half Minion-fest... the jokes get a little tired and repetitive. There's also no interesting villains or side characters - after the first 15m it's as generic of a kids' action movie as you can imagine

It was okay. Not as good as the first two films, but not a giant step down either. It does fall into that trap of taking characters who were designed to be side-characters, literally minions in this case, and making them the main focus, which doesn't quite work. There's zero emotional attachment. I never really laughed, but there were a few funny moments that produced a smirk on my face. The animation was fine, and most of the voicework was too, with the exception of Sandra Bullock.

Sure, it looked pretty, aside from the characters, but there wasn't much of a plot and most of the run time is made of characters falling and screaming. I am usually more generous with kid movies, but this seems devoid of any kind of substance, and the references and jokes were tired and uninteresting, and possibly too obscure for most kids outside the UK

I wanted to like this movie, because I really enjoyed the minions in "Despicable Me 1" and 2. Perhaps the producers/studio overhyped it by putting out too many short films and posters in advance. Based on the ending, it looks like there will be a sequel; I just hope that it's better than this.

It is a fun and easy watch but offers no novelty in terms of animation; it relies on slapstick and exaggerated gestures but I think that there is one very positive thing about this movie: the minions don't speak a scrutable language and the audience is forced to watch them speaking their mother tongue, this forces the director to narrate his story in a pictorial style and, the audience to work their imaginations to better understand them. But still it could be much better.

Ba-na-nah. I feel like the Despicable Me series has been hit with a freeze ray. The first one is still really excellent, I didn't love the sequel and now this prequel is also really not that good. There are a few parts that made me smile, but it doesn't have the heart that the first movie has. First, I hate the minions language. It's practically baby-talk with a bunch of Spanish mixed in. Listening to long segments with the minions "talking" got pretty old, pretty fast...

Minions is the inevitable spin-off to follow on from it's parent franchise 'Despicable Me'. There's no doubting that the unexpected success of the Despicable Me films was the supporting Minion characters. But this solo outing is a lazy attempt at trying to give the Minions their own feature length outing. Whereas 10 minute Minion shorts would be more than sufficient. The slapstick humour is tired and I think both adults and kids alike will be underwhelmed. And I for one missed Gru and the Girls.

Minions relies on its quirkiness and the cute factor of its titled characters to pull it through, though by the end it had become grating and I found myself skipping through the extensive post-credit animation. It's watchable, occasionally funny and the mockumentary style narration works in its favour, but it's ultimately forgettable. The film lacks the heart that Despicable Me had, and barring the 60's nostalgia trip that may appeal to the grandparents of the target audience, offers little.

Takes away the best parts of the Despicable Me films - Gru's heists and father/daughter relationship - and focuses on the mindless gags and gibberish provided by the minions. There are are several interesting moments when it switches to different animation styles, but for the most part it falls into a monotonous routine of cartoon cliches. It doesn't feel very fair to criticize it too harshly because it's clearly meant for the youngest of audiences, but then it is also a shameless cash grab

The Minions are funny in large quantities. So the writers' goal is to split them up and only focus on three. And then it stops being funny. Except for Bob, whose only purpose is to be the arbitrary comic relief and has no real pathos. Halfway through the movie I thought this would've been funnier as a mockumentary, since the only time it's actually funny is when it's a mockumentary at the beginning (i.e. the trailer).

The barrage of shallow yuks becomes more exhausting than funny as the movie bounces along (which isn't to say that they didn't come up with some legit funny jokes - with a joke every ten seconds for ninety minutes it'd be weird if NONE were funny). I suspect I would have been one of the kids who loved this were I 25 years younger. But this is definitely more of a true and specific kids film than a for-the-entire-family film ala the best of Disney/Pixar/Dreamwork.

Impossibly boring, flat, uninteresting and absurd-in-a-bad-way. There's very little entertainment to extract from this - you can't stretch out a 2 minute vignette or silly side-scene from Despicable Me into a feature length film. I suppose if you were 5 you'd just be content to watch the Minions do things, but then you'd also be content with a ball that lights up and makes noises so that's hardly a ringing endorsement
