Minnâ-yatteruka!

Enjoyed the [short-lived] early bout of sex comedy, Kitano-style, but the majority is random parody nonsense.

Starts really great, but loses it's focus somewhere in the middle and begins feeling too random and less funny.

(Viewed on 22/12/10): It's well established that comedy doesn't travel as well as other genres. Asian comedies often strike Westerners as being downright weird, and M-y certainly fits the bill. It's a virtually plotless episodic sexcapade that satirizes courtship rituals in modern Japan and contains a countless number of references to Japanese popular culture which mostly eluded this viewer. It's better than his other comedies thanks to a handful of outrageous scenes and bizarre sight gags.

Oh man. An amazing, surreal throwback to old school comedy, even for its day. A lot of Kitano's influences are on display here: loads of slapstick and manzai, yakuza, Zatoichi, filmmaking, gallows humor (e.g. suicide jokes), bad sci-fi, and more. The runtime could be trimmed, but I'm giving that up to Takeshi's enthusiasm over making the film. I think comedians will enjoy it most. A lot of nonsense that I enjoyed.

Being nonsense is what makes this movie great. Kitano makes Monty Python and the ZAZ trio seems like average guys.

It doesn't make much sense but it's hilariously funny.
