About Mishima's life-long pursuit to reconcile words and action, which are two kinds of circuit between the infinite and the finite, under his phantasm of beauty, which is no doubt a mixture of the Japanese and the Western.

If you are going to shoot a literary biopic you have two options: you can focus on the details of the writer's life, or you can partake in the writer's self-mythologisation. The first option is eminently boring so I am glad Schrader went for the second one. Never have I seen a movie that so thoroughly investigates the relation between life and art. Mishima is unlike anything I have ever seen, it is beautiful, complex, bursting with ideas.

Schrader might have taken some liberties, but I can't help but think that he has immortalized Mishima in a way that the man himself could only dream of. A masterfully executed framing device, with immaculate set design.
