Costa-Gavras has balls of steel. A great film that twists and turns with the best of them, but it has power thanks to Lemmon (cast against type), who is so believable and personable as a man witnessing his patriotic idealism shattered in slow motion, along with the rest of us.

A sense of defeat & hopelessness is palpable in this authoritarian maelstrom. The writing [crazy Oscars] & acting can be a little spotty but Spacek/Lemmon keep it afloat, for the most part. The largest discrepancies here being a cliched conflict the two main characters have early on and a portrayal of the American government that seems to border on cartoonish - despite its authenticity.

Reminded me of "Taken" if Liam Neeson had spent less time kicking ass and more time whining about his kid.

Works against itself constantly, particularly in the beginning with a flimsy romantic plot and some spotty English speaking actors, but Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon completely carry the film. Lemmon's acting is especially moving, and the best moments occur when his character reveals his own private anguish and hopelessness. The writing is obvious and lacks nuance but the scale at which the conflict is presented makes it a transportive and eerie experience nonetheless.

At times rather flimsy, at times a bit pointless, Missing doesn't match up to Costa-Gavras' finer works, but by the end, it's a pretty strong political thriller that leaves you quite shaken.

Excellent, suspenseful action thriller, right on the button of what was happening in South America at the time. Strong across the board.

I appreciate this film for the way it reveals one of the more despicable functions of the US government in the last half of the 20th century. That said, the writing eschews any complexity in the villainous US military and consulate staff, while the characters of Beth and Ed are a little too simplistic in their opposition. I may not agree with the reasons for the US involvement in the Pinochet affair, but when portrayed, I'd like to see it done in a compelling fashion.

It's good, you know. Sissy Spacek and her husband (?) give some pretty terrible acting but the South American (Chile) feel is great, and the void between the American default position and the Chilean default human position is excellent, the Americans are like invading aliens...

A daring piece of filmmaking that leaves a lasting impression. The fact that the truth still isn't known makes it even more hard-hitting. It could've been more as a movie, especially with Costa-Gavras at the the helm, but I'd still recommend it. Jack Lemmon is the man.

It's a testament to both Lemmon's great performance and especially Costa-Gravas' masterful directorial ability that this film works so well. He manages to meld the political and personal into a compelling mystery and expose brutality without dwelling on it. There are some powerful images but the fantastic pacing is what makes it all work together. Suffice to say this is a magnificent and important film and I urge everyone to watch it.

The Missing is most effective when it centres on Lemmon and Spacek. Through their political differences and personal reconciliations they manage to illuminate and carry the deft message that would have otherwise been muddled under the at times, erratic and ostentatious direction of Costa-Garvas.

I'm gonna say the theme of this is the conflict of personal tragedy against that of a much larger scale. Sure the protagonists aren't the only ones suffering, and maybe by a lesser margin than some, but it's their lives. Hardly anyone deserved this in the first place. It's a horrifying and dreadful situation. The film does a great job of never letting things get too hopeful, but never without a glimmer left over.

Very strong political film, given how much attention is given to the ubiquity of the street militia, who permeate so many scenes (even if just by their sounds). The emotional aspect seems reasonably quelled to make this procedural thriller-drama more effective rather than run the risk of being mawkish or even sentimental (a dangerous '80s staple). Lemmons' last line seems to have a duel meaning, given how Anglocentric it comes across as.

A really nice political thriller that manages to balance the personal side throughout, something we don't see too often anymore. None of it would work without the turns from Lemmon and Spacek though.

This was a very good surprise, my first Costa-Gavras film and I thought that it was going to be outdated, but I was very wrong. The acting, storytelling and design is top notch and the subject is still very relevant and hasn't lose the shock value, this movie will remain with me a long time and I am still surprised of how brave where all the people involved on the making on this film.

It's easy to take for granted when you've already radicalized, but credit for getting pretty much everything right about the Chile coup. Especially impressive for a Hollywood film made less than 10 years after the coup. If I had to nitpick, there's a glaring lack of agency from the Chilean people (they spend most of the film getting shot in the background), and Gavras doesn't seem to have any criticism for the American hegemony that protects the protagnists through the film.

What an interesting bit of less prominent history. Like Z, Missing has a really good sense of place and does a great job conveying the politics of the situation. Lemmon is great and Spacek, despite the out of place accent, is equally admirable. Unfortunately what stops me from falling completely in love with it is its lack of style and panache. There's just an almost overly realistic, straightforward, to the point nature of everything, that doesn't always make for the most entertaining film.

PG movies sure were different back in the day lol. A bit stuffy, meandering, and anticlimactic. The movie is really about an older man having his worldview turned upside down, and Jack Lemmon's performance sells that concept.
