Starts out like it might be a decent film but ends up using aliens instead of actually coming up with an interesting storyline. Stupid situations created for crew members to die in an attempt to create tear-jerking audience reactions only end up making the movie seem like low-brow trash. Stay away. Stay far, far away.

This movie wants to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, but instead it just sucks. It revels in every "space movie" cliche in the book; all the parts that are supposed to be tense are boring, and all the parts that are supposed to be emotional are laughable; the dialogue is cringe-worthy, making the normally competent if rather dull cast look like buffoons; the scientific elements of the movie are total nonsense; the end is tripe. I can't believe this crap got made.

I enjoyed it more than I should have. I'm incredibly interested in space exploration and I still think this is pretty mediocre. I was amazed by it when I was younger, but viewing it again a lot of the magic was gone. I wouldn't recomend this film.

Dr Pepper the official soft drink of Mars. I hate how crazy a movie about a husband and wife crew going to Mars could've been from DePalma in the 80s. Scott Glenn just hung dong on the Martian service before it was cool. This is just an okay space romp which is disappointing as hell from DePalma.

The absurd plot, insane ending, and pointless deaths of many characters are only a few reasons why this film not only fails to entertain, but comes off as down right poorly made, even though it had all the markings of a high budget film, such as good actors and above average special effects. Utter crapulence!

It's like someone combined 2001 and Apollo 13, resulting in a horrific collision, killing the plot and science on impact. At least the visuals and concepts survived, even if they sustained massive injuries.

Now I'm going to buck the trend here - I thought this was a decent film. Yes, it was a bit cheesy in parts, yes there were similarities to Contact ... but special effects and graphics were outstanding, the plot was simply and believably told and it worked as a story. Under-rated and well worth a watch

Awful. What irritates the most is the hand-holding dialogue these people spout. Even the console displays are infested with it. Jerry O'Connell plays the dumbest astronaut in cinematic history - his leap of logic when discussing the graves is mind-blowing. Oh, and fuck you crying-alien-planetarium-tour-guide.

This is probably Gary Sinise's worst movie. It is slow and plodding with a poorly written story. The cast had a lot of potential, but is ultimately wasted. Eventually it becomes an issue of when the next charecter is going to die. And then there's the martians...

De Palma knows how to shoot a film; fancy shots and camera trickery abound, and pretty much all the visuals hold up very well for a film from 2000 (with the exception of a certain *cough cough* we're presented with at the end). But overall, Mission to Mars feels like a rather pedestrian attempt to create something as profound as 2001: A Space Odyssey and present it in an accessible and family-friendly package. The result is dull, derivative and sentimental.

Just doesn't do enough for the viewer. I like De Palma, I like space and I like space movies but this just doesn't seem to ever deliver. Story is untidy and while there are some pleasing factors, it just ends up falling short.

Opening with a long and lively moving-camera shot (à la SNAKE EYES), the energy is not sustained and there are too many poorly-judged moments and too little payoff. Fails to convey any real grandeur associated with space pioneering, and the final act fails to develop any other interesting themes. The references to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, SOLARIS and other films may be deliberate, but only serve to indicate the gulf from those movies to this one. Budget cuts may have affected the production.

There are better movies about Mars. Like, maybe, just watching 2 hours of footage from Curiosity. Even if the footage is in black and white and the camera is pointed at the same rock the entire time.

De Palma's directing can't save this from the abysmal writing, The plot alludes to personal tragedies of characters which it never let us experience, which makes it hard to get invested in them and the movie unengaging, even if there are many dangers to overcome. There are some enjoyable tracking shots, even if one is completely unnecessary. The otherwise solid cast also can't make the horrible dialogues work. The 2001esque philosophizing is intriguing, but underdeveloped.

Directionless movie that should be blamed for lack of Hollywood's interest in hard sci-fi films. Visual effects are very good (with exception of the last act), science part is quite interesting and the zero G scenes inside the space ship are the best thing about this film. Story, however, is a space wreck and the characters are cardboard cutouts with an intelligence of a trailer park dweller ("There are only three graves!"). The last act made me hide under the face-palm.

Wanders aimlessly for the first hour before giving us some things to actually think about and some pretty graphics to look at. Look at all those writers! No wonder the script was garbage! Even Don Cheadle (whom I usually love) knew he was in a stinker and acted accordingly. "Oh god. No, oh god no". My thoughts exactly, Don!

An intriguing idea and an outstanding cast somehow doesn't save this film. It's visually pleasing, but the problem is that the story is poorly written and it progresses badly. You never get invested in the story or characters, and the revelations and major plot points are revealed in a way that makes them seem far lamer than they needed to be. Even Armageddon turned out better than this, and that's mediocre. The 2001: A Space Odyssey references are nice though.

It is a bit over-melodramatic and the special effects look too aged for a movie made in the 2000s (it looks more like a movie from 1980s, maybe it was intentional). But it has a nice humane side to it and the actors had great chemistry. The science parts passed by me though; either they were mumblings to cover holes or I wasn't paying enough attention; I don't know. I didn't mind watching it.

Uncommonly lethargic and almost insultingly literal-minded effort from De Palma has some nice if ultimately pointless tracking shots here and there to display the DNA of the master, but this feels like an awkward tribute to Kubrick (with some Spielberg thrown in), though neither film-maker would ever indulge in the thuddingly dull extended explanations at the finale. And yet the highlights (especially Robbins' tense and moving descent to Mars) almost let the film squeak by as a recommendation.

Directed by both Brian De Palmas, the bad one helming the technically underwhelming first half that's shot like a rock music video and features mostly plot exposition dialogue, but the good one adds some outer-space tension (that'll work for fans of the newly popular sci-fi survival genre) and a frankly perplexing conclusion that offers up plenty of existential curiosity.

I guess one shouldn't expect a De Palma film to be original. The writing is incredibly weak and the performances are only passable. When the human aspect of your film hinges on Gary Sinise being sympathetic you've lost before you've begun. However, it is wonderfully shot and somehow builds and maintains its tension much better than it has any right to.

A corny misfire with bad acting, laughably literal dialogue, and an all round poor attempt to capture a 'Spielbergian' style sense of 'wonder'. A bad film no doubt. It gets bonus marks for a few very entertaining scenes, and that fact that I'm a sucker for most sci-fi. Simplistic physics errors aside, (an obvious forewarning of what is to come) some exciting stuff, some cool stuff & a spaceship load of schmaltz/crap. The "meaningful" scenes drag, & the scenes that are supposed to capture imagination/revelation are laughable. M2M is never believable. This film tries so hard to be a 2001 a space odyssey and in some ways it captures it perfectly, the music is superb. But like I said, it tries so hard to be 2001 odyssey but there is not enough quality, to many characters and too much dialogue in some areas. The cgi should have been left out or improved enormously, and throughout you feel it’s good but it’s not original, and during the finish then you feel that it’s not good enough. Oh well
