Viewed December 20, 2013. A definitive portrait of what it means to be Canadian. Understated in its power, but ultimately quite moving.

i've never heard of claude jutra, but after seeing this i know he is some sort of savant/devil, the camerawork in this movie at one minute made my jaw drop and the next minute i covered my eyes in horror. aside from direction the writing is great and it is an all around awesome movie.

My dislike of french Canada aside, this is pretty good. The last 30 min or so really make this. that dream sequence mhhhmmm

Ny julefilm!

The finer historical and political points of its French Canadian identity aside, this film really sneaks up on you, much as the enlightenments of adolescence might. It's not until the final act, when carefree children's games and the wonders of sex give way to the bittersweet realities of regret and death, that this coming-of-age reveals itself to be something truly special.

I wouldn't call it "Canada's best film"... I haven't seen a whole lot, but I prefer Sweet Hereafter and Guy Maddin, for all his faults, is pretty damn interesting. But it's very good, authentic and bittersweet. I also thought the acting was superb, the music very nice and restrained, and the cinematography was good and occasionally even stunning. My only complaint is that there isn't much here that you haven't seen before. But even if it's a somewhat familiar story, it's still quite well told.

initially very boring, but after a while this becomes a quiet and touching coming-of-age story about a confrontation with mortality during the time of birth - that is, christmas.

Probably the most significant christmas movie ever.

Viewed without regard to its specific time & place, it's a well-executed, touching drama. Viewed as a commentary on pre-Quiet Revolution Quebec, it's devastating.
