Movie is easy enough to sit through since you want to bone Dunst, Stiles, and Gyllenhaal throughout, but it's still your stereotypical Julia Roberts film.

GREAT storyline... while Julia Roberts is the headliner, I believe Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Marcia Gay Harden and Maggie Gyllenhaal really *make* the movie, especially Julia Stiles. Their spot-on performance of the educated 50's Wellesley girls, from speech to elocution to costuming and makeup... absolutely astounding. Throw in a phenomenal soundtrack (including a cameo by the amazing Tori Amos), and this movie is a great romantic-comedy, with a little seriousness as well... excellent!

A counterfeit and ingenuine product in every respect. I do think that John Slattery might have gotten his role in Mad Men partially through this so there's 1 good thing about the movie, aside from the actresses being very cute of course

A Female version of "Dead Poets Society". But it's not as inspiring. Maggie Gylenhaal was good though.

Mona Lisa Smile is ultimately a waste of time. Not because it's bad or not all that entertaining (it's occasionally interesting), but because its message is dated and only very, very few people are going to need to hear it nowadays. There's also not a whole lot there apart from the message to hold the film together, leaving the experience empty and hollow, even if we do spend a lot of time with these characters. The effort is there, but Mona Lisa Smile is about 50 years too late.

The difficulty of being a teacher out of his time is shown brilliantly in this film. The way they have managed to convey a futuristic message - both in relation to art and outdated concepts of society - to those who watch is admirable. It has become one of my favorite movies.

Expertly judged performances by a terrific cast help paper over the familiar outlines of the screenplay (a variation on DANGEROUS MINDS etc. in period garb); film works best in the first half touching on academic debate over the nature of "art" and the well-developed rivalry between Dunst and Roberts; Roberts has rarely delivered a more subtle and underplayed performance. The final act dealing with romantic entanglements is a little perfunctory, causing the film to lose some of its momentum.

Better than I was afraid it would be, but not nearly as good as it could've been. The Dead Poets' Society: Female Version.

Though Mona Lisa Smile espouses the value of breaking barriers, the movie itself is predictable and safe.

A surprisingly solid all-star chick flick in which a bunch of mid-century repressed American students get in touch with their feminist sides and update their values through the medium of Julia Roberts's liberal modern art teacher. There are a number of well-drawn characters, and the depiction of the period and way of thinking of that era is generally interesting. The plot maybe loses steam towards the end but doesn't stop the movie feeling satisfying and enlightening.

E' "L'attimo fuggente" al femminile, i richiami sono evidentissimi e quasi imbarazzanti... eppure riesce comunque ad essere piacevole, grazie ad un'ambientazione interessante e ad un ottimo cast.

I wanted it to be so-bad-it's-good, but alas it was really just plain and by the numbers, and a pretty hollow effort overall. The cast wasn't really even very winning, except Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. Roberts, Dunst, Gyllenhaal and Goodwin were all ok, but Stiles was abysmal. Utterly abysmal. It was awful whenever she spoke.

A feminist 50s period women's picture, quite well-acted, Julia as you've never seen her. A bit sincere. But I wanted my daughter to see this movie, to see the history of where smart women once were and how far things have changed. Reese Witherspoon amd Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal are all excellent.

Speaking as a college-educated feminist, this film is WAY too heavy-handed with its messages, and its ending is both sappy and unrealistic. I did appreciate the scene where Katherine is asked to respect a student's choice to be a housewife and mother. Too many feminists look down on voluntary housewives, when we're supposed to be about *choice.*
