Refreshingly dark kids' movie that effectively captures the tone of '80s Amblin movies (as one would expect with Spielberg and Zemekis onboard as EPs). Loved the animation, which, despite its age, has more energy and expressiveness than most animated movies made since. Underrated.

Awesome. It's just the kind of movie I grew up with in the 80s, and I'm excited to think that some kid that sees it now will get to grow up with it and reminisce about it in twenty years or so.

I enjoyed it for its humor and willingness to scare, but it's good despite its "groundbreaking" motion capture animation, not because of it; some good work by a very talented team is hampered by the creepy, plasticky, zombie-puppet animation. When they run, when they hug, when they make any sudden movements at all, really, this is the scariest movie I've ever seen.

Loved this movie. It's actually quite disturbing for your average kids flick, but the cinematography is stunning (yes, I know it's animation) and plenty of things happen that are just awesomely cool -- the entire climax of the film, for example, is pure adrenaline. You can spot a number of times where the story cribs liberally from "the classics", but it's all in good fun, and I had a good time placing the voices to their famous faces. Great Halloween movie -- it's a lot of fun.

The "CGI masquerading as claymation" doesn't hold up, but Dan Harmon's ear for dialog is unimpeachable in this seriously-dark children's tale that opens with an old man having a stroke. It's cute, but still macabre in a way most kids aren't really ready for.

Love the spooky fun premise and the classic Stand By Me-esque kids-solving-mystery trope but the execution underwhelms: cop duo aside, the humour is lacking (a lot to do with the often awkwardly stilted dialogue and animation I think) and the payoff for the haunted house intrigue is a bit of a downer that clashes with the film's comedy-horror tone. The first two acts are still decent enough though due to the strength of its concept and a few good elements (Buscemi's voice is on point).

I don't see what the big deal is here. Sure the animation is good and it doesn't rely on poop jokes or pop culture references, but it's really pretty boring for a large part of its runtime and terribly simplistic.

It's probably good for kids on Halloween, but I hate Zemeckis's motion capture 'animation' style and the plot of this movie is pretty flimsy. Also, I felt the anti-fat-people subtext was pretty disgusting.

There are a lot of things to like about this movie. First, the characterization of the kids is plausible -they're not precocious geniuses or utter buffoons. Also, I like how the world they live in hasn't been clinically sanitized to remove any reference to the way adults interact with children or themselves. The animation is wonderful, and the premise is nice with funny and sharp execution for 2/3 of the way. BUT after that 2/3 it becomes sappy, slapdash, and uninteresting.

It looks good, it sounds good, but underneath the surface, it's a soulless, hollow-hearted diversion that has neither the intelligence nor wit to be anything more than a completely mechanical experience for most discerning audiences. It's creepy alright, but where is the fun?

Amazing animation, for the most part, and just all around fun to watch. I was surprised that I found most of the silly humor funny, Nick Cannon's character's facial expressions were HILARIOUS (something I never thought I'd say). And for the most part doesn't hold back, the kids are acting as kids do and the movie feels genuine because of it.

Sub par. The plot was Burton esque, as was the house animation, but its obvious that that's where they spent all their time. The main character animation was shockingly bad. I know it's a quible but couldn't they have maybe had the hair move? The characters all looks like action figures half the time.

Computer-animated kiddie horror show lowers its sights to an illusion of Claymation. The human figures are awfully stiff, but the space around them is wonderfully plastic and elastic (the fall of an autumn leaf, first thing in the movie, gives you a dizzying idea of what's in store), and the action moves right along until it runs into the overwrought, long-drawn-out finale.

A well made movie about a kid stuck at home and noticing strange things in the neighbourhood. There is a good mixture of childhood crush, friendship, crazy oldies, untrusting parents, urban legends all spread out to make a family movie with a good touch of comedy. Mystery and thrills are also a good part of the equation for this excellent animation movie.

While I agree with the popular opinion that Pixar's films are the best in their genre, I find it to be as much a result of their dedication to craft as it is the ineptitude of their numerous competitors. Monster House had some great people listed among the credits, but it just falls flat to the point that it offers little to nothing to people outside its intended audience (children 12 and under); a problem that very seldom plagues a Pixar film.

I couldn’t believe how much I was laughing in this. For a kids movies, it’s relatively creepy at times and the horror imagery is all very cool and even beautiful at times. With solid voice performances & a very fun, distinct visual style that shouldn't work as well as it does, where it's lacking is in the actual plot, which is littered with holes & issues that really take away from the whole experience. The characters are largely flat & one-dimensional, & at several points it feels like the script doesn't know who it's being written for. It gets by on the fun factor of its style & little else. Overall, it's still worth a look.

This was not an enjoyable movie. It had an interesting enough premise, but I felt like any potential was squandered. The characters either aren't likable or are just forgettable, the dialogue is mostly stupid, the plot takes weird turns, and the animation hasn't aged well. Also for a movie about a monster house, it's actually rather boring, but maybe that's just because I had zero investment in the movie or its characters.

Monster House suffers enormously from outdated ugly CGI animation. Cause while it starts unpromising after a quick twist the plot of this actually becomes rather engaging and well-done with likeable characters and for a kids animations movie it's quite scary. But yeah that ugly CGI kept me from liking this more.
