Boring and annoying. It's a really bad mashup of Alien and Ong Bak; but without any of the good parts of those.

I'm not sure why Anderson gets so much hate, but I think in 10-20 years time people will view him differently. While it's true that he seems incapable of creating anything more than stock characters, popular myths are just as simple. He's plot/conflict driven & keeps decent to very good action scenes coming while adding new layers of world-building (even if they don't necessarily make sense) to make even the derivative feel fun. He's got another viable franchise here. See you in 6 movies.

Now that Milla is too old for "Resident Evil" we see her recast into the role of a soldier in yet another video game adaptation only this one was even less ripe for a movie. It's limp, poorly written, and devoid of substance, and I'd probably watch thirty sequels. What can I say? I'm a sucker for these kinds of things.

Y'know that meme, "it is what it is"? Just insert it here. I mean this movie goes for the bare minimum in terms of story, dialogue, as well as connection to the source material in anything other than name and occasional design. The visuals (aka the main reason to see this movie) are more good than bad, but far from consistent. A couple of the performers do their best with the pile of "not much" they've been given, and the ending is such blatant sequel-begging I couldn't help but laugh at it.

So apparently you can polish a turd. Monster Hunter has some good (not great) visual effects, but remains utterly unengaging for its entire runtime; a feat as impressive as the movie is bad. I'm unsure whether Jovovich or Jaa delivers the worse performance, but it was obviously a grunting race to the bottom. Why was Perlman cosplaying John Candy in Spaceballs?

Milla and Tony fighting giant monsters in an alternative world -- and sometimes themselves -- while eating chocolate and trying to figure out how to get the hell outta there. Pretty much what PWSA followers -- and I'm one -- have said over and over again: Pacific Rim/Resident Evil/Fury Road crossover we didn't know we needed. His action has never been this kinectic, yet still so organized in its placement of characters and places, in its simple but unique geometry of what's in and out of frame.

Score is generous and is the consequence of below-floor expectations. W.S knows how to stage action, and his editing generally has a rhythm to it, despite the claims of detractors to the contrary. The problem, as always, is that he lacks imagination, and M.H is a typical mish mash of obvious influences from superior films that have not been creatively flipped. e.g.Starship Troopers, Fury Road etc. The effects are good for the modest budget though, and Jovovich is a reliable action heroine.

I don't know why I keep watching every new movie Paul WS Anderson makes. I hate his films. He made one good film (Mortal Kombat), one decent film (Event Horizon), and then has made crap ever since. I keep watching for some reason. Monster Hunter is more of the same: his wife "acting", a boring storyline, and a fight scene so badly edited that you can not tell what the hell is happening. I wish studios would stop giving this hack money.

Many extra points for Milla Jovovich who rarely disappoints. Good soundtrack. The writer and director are clueless hacks. It looses its luster right out of the gate. Who would be impressed with this crap? Children perhaps? It would work better as a nightmare. Too many WTF elements to enjoy. Terrible CGI. It is boring, annoying, has too much oorah, and makes no sense. No setup, nothing original, asinine plot, and zero immersion. Not good. A terrible waste of money, time, talent, and resources.

The point of the movie is to have action sequences and big monsters and it succeeds in both. Nothing less, nothing more.

Fair to reasonable actioner is far too derivative (and slowly paced) to be successful, but is largely harmless and inconsequential; Jovovich sleep walks these sorts of roles at this stage, but as always she's a pleasant (if not electrifying) heroine and Anderson handles his action scenes with a base level of competent flair. Unremarkable, but may have gotten a more generous score except for the cynically presumptuous finale which assumes we'd be thirsty for a sequel to this bland concoction!

Having never played the Video Games I wasn't sure whether this would connect with me and mostly it didn't. The opening acts of MH nearly lost me as neither Jovovich or Jaa have the acting chops to pull off the poorly written 'Enemy Mine' first half. Thankfully it does pick up once they team up with Jaa's original gang and then it becomes a little easier to enjoy thanks to Perlman speaking english. Still a weak effort from PWSA but it wasn't as bad as I feared it was going to be.

*Heart bleeds in fandom* pros: -Tony Jaa -the monster cgi - Ron Perlmans ape-costume. cons: -seizure procedure cutstorm in every actionscene -story, dialogue, every spoken word is a unnecessary cringefeast -Mila Jovovich is just so annoying in this movie

I have never played the video game franchise. All I wanted was a good movie, and I was actually a fan of some of the Resident Evil films, so I had reason to get somewhat excited for this movie, but at the end of the day, it's just kind of boring. One of those films that just doesn't strike any kind of chord with the audience. It especially lacks any kind of character development. Liked the look of the monsters. That's about it.

Anderson doesn't employ enough of the whatever-it-is that usually sucks me in to his schlock in this outing; consequently, I noticed in full detail it's vague plot, unnecessary Earth-avatar conceit, uncomfortably white treatment of a language barrier that is later forgotten so that Ron Perlman can speak perfect English, and kinda repetitive action. But … they did include the chef cat, so it wasn't all bad (and the effects were generally pretty good).

The first 70 minutes is Tony Jaa and Milla Jovovich becoming good buddies and teaming up to fight monsters in a smart way. It's fun, but then the movie suddenly remembers it's a movie and in about 5 minutes we get and exposition dump, half a dozen pointless characters, a quest objective with a big boss in the way and a "ticking bomb" for fake urgency. What follows is 20 minutes of pure idiocy and an unearned cliffhanger. Too bad, it was almost the best movie Paul W.S. Anderson ever made.

at its best it's like that languid first stretch of RIDDICK, wordless elemental survival set pieces in a beastie-strewn hellscape, completely fat-free and reasonably well-staged. at its worst it's a stupid ugly piece of shit. yet to be convinced that anderson deserves his place on vulgar auteurist mount rushmore next to such esteemed luminaries as tony scott, michael bay, the farrelly brothers, john hyams and neveldine/taylor--wait, on second thought, maybe he does...
