One of Pixar's most flat-out fun movies. It uses, subverts, and transcends several "college movie" tropes to create a story whose ending you know, but which still manages to surprise, especially in the third act.

Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, it threw a curve ball. I loved the final montage and the lesson of hard work & determination in order to reach your goals. In an age of instant gratifaction and entitlement, it's a great message for kids and young adults. Even though the characters are fantastical, the themes are realistic. No, not everyone is going to excell, not everyone has been born with certain gifts, but we can all serve a greater purpose by focusing on personal strengths.

Sub par really is the way to describe this. I guess the entire college setting is too cultural specific (american) too strike a chord with me (danish). And as for making a sequel for the kids that saw the original and are now off to college I'd go with Toy Story 3 any day. I guess the "Believe in yourself!" and "Yay, teamwork!" is all fine and dandy, but I spent most of the film thinking: "He's not staying with those guys forever...at some point he's going to leave and sign with the Miami Heat"

A strong return to form for Pixar studios having stumbled in recent years. Before you can be too quick to dismiss this as another cash grab, the film hurls a strong dose of storytelling and character-driven drama. 'Monsters U' is pure bread-and-better excellent writing. When I thought I had it pegged, the movie throws a surprise or two with a strong theme that challenges the typical believe-and-do Hollywood message to kids and hits them with some real-world reality. U is stronger than Inc.

The more universal gags are too few and far between for 'Monsters University' to traverse the cultural ocean all the way to Denmark, but one thing did strike a chord with me: You see, all my life I've wanted to be an actor. My hero was Ben Affleck. I had all his movies, my room was covered with posters of him. Anyway. People kept telling me that I wasn't good looking, and that I just didn't have the talent, and thinking back on that now they were totally right! Those were needless killings. Hm.

A rare prequel that successfully utilizes the inevitability of its outcome. Here, it becomes a sort of emotional drive as the audience understands that, despite his hopes and hard work, Mike ultimately won’t see his dream come to fruition. Sometimes, we have to find new dreams. That premise (especially for family entertainment produced by the Wish Upon a Star Co. themselves) is still as audacious as ever. And on top of that, Monsters University is pretty darn funny too.

If you really liked the two leads -- and not Boo, because she doesn't make an appearance here -- from Monsters Inc. there's a good chance you'll like Monsters University. It's not as good, but it's entertaining and moves at a good clip, so it won't bore you. Its function as a prequel really only happens at the end, and while it's fun to see how it sets up Monsters Inc., that's really its secondary purpose. It'll make you laugh and might excite you a few times, but it's forgettable and bland.

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised with this. Pixar have hit this coming-of-age slant to their cleverly timed sequels/prequels out the park. This captures the charm from the first movie with some surprisingly competent new concepts to add to the already creative screenplay and caters comically and conceptually to both the kids and those, like me, who have reached university age. Maybe not as great for those not in this age range, but it certainly struck a chord with me.

Pixar's first prequel turns a potentially lame college premise into a good story with new interesting characters and situations for Mike and Sulley. Although, it doesn't have the same amount of charm and originality of the first.

The opening is cute and the ending is at least interesting, though the way it's done rubbed me the wrong way. Most of the film, though, is a mediocre by the numbers college movie sustained only by the charms of Mike the one eyed monster.

Not bad, every minute of this movie is enjoyable in some way. There's no real moments of downtime in this movie. Good humor, great animation, and a charm that almost (but not quite) matches that of the original. The problem with this movie is basically the lack of excellence. Nothing really stood out for me. This movie isn't as good as I secretly hoped from Pixar, but still very decent and enjoyable.

Monsters University is Pixar's first prequel following the success of its predecessor more than a decade earlier. Like Toy Story, this is one of the few Pixar creations that I wanted to see a sequel to, or in this case a prequel. Unlike Cars. Mike & Sully are one of the most loveable and enjoyable animated double acts and they alone justify future Monsters films. This prequel doesn't quite capture the charm and freshness of the original. But for all round enjoyment and laughs MU caters for all.

Pixar is slowly gaining speed again with this unexpectedly fun prequel. Monsters U is way, way funnier than any of the previews would've had you believe, and the studio does an excellent job reimagining this creative world and its characters. Would I call it worthy of Pixar's holding-steady track record? Hell yeah I would. Monsters U proves the studio is still worth our time and money.

The whole thing felt like it wanted to be a live-action Disney Channel Original Movie. Monsters Inc, like many Pixar films, introduced us to a slightly different, well-imagined world and then explored it. Monsters University just feels like a bunch of (normal, human) college stereotypes dressed up in different clothes.

Much better than a fairly unnecessary prequel has any right to be. Makes a lot of bog-standard college movie gags while also having a lot of heart, and an excellent third act which delivers a satisfying message that I wasn't quite expecting. Very well animated and doesn't rely too much on callbacks to the original.

Pixar's prequel to Monsters, Inc. amounts to an animated kids version of "Animal House" with monsters replacing sorority nerds. Predictable to a fault and not as smartly written as the first film. Yet while it's missing that usual Pixar spark, it's still an enjoyable film. The final act doesn't exactly surprise, but it brings Mike and Sully's characters together through a very nice moment that makes sense leading into their job at Monsters, Inc. Kids will love it, adults will be slightly amused.

It's alright, passable. I haven't seen the first one in a while but have fond memories of it from when I was a kid. Based on that memory this film falls short in that comparison, but I should rewatch the first one to be sure. This film has a lot of cliches and will probably appeal a lot more to kids than adults, nonetheless it managed to stay mildly entertaining.

A very minor work by Pixar standards (which I feel like I've been saying a lot lately, so maybe it's time to just adjust my standards), but if you compare it to any given recent college comedy, I'd say it still comes out on top. It's cliche but has a fair number of amusing scenes and moments. No future classic though.

Yeah, cute, fun as hell until the competition ends, but, as a person that never found S.A. a masterpiece, I think this is actually the kind of film that Pixar manages to do well after a couple of misfires -- Cars 2, Brave. At least there is no such thing as a villain here -- no, that old grumpy dean is just an old grumpy dean --, but just a bunch of funny college situations borrowed from R-rated films and adapted into something pleasant for all ages. Ok.

Even on a low burner Pixar puts out better animated films than pretty much everyone else. It's enjoyable and fun and has a pretty good 80s underdog/college movie vibe but it seriously lacks depth (particularly in some of the supporting characters) and is certainly nowhere near as good as the original. One particular instance of strange deus ex machina I'm not used to seeing from Pixar bothered me.

this movie does a good job of bringing back the beloved duo. despite its generally cliche (cool guys vs losers) and rather predictable (this is a prequel after all) plot, it stays true to its roots and is able to provide a lot of depth and backstory to its characters. a fun flick worth a watch for both children and adults alike.

I was just as surprised as most other viewers with how enjoyable and worthy this prequel was. It does everything a prequel is supposed to do: expand on the characters' backstories, evolve the movie's known universe, but not copy everything that worked in the first one, or add unnecessary elements that don't make sense for the series' continuity. On top of all that, it was really funny, heartwarming and creative.

It worked fairly well as a prequel. It was cool to see the origins of some of the characters. The story simply wasn't that good though. It was so similar to many other American college movies. I felt like I'd seen it all before. So, yeah, it was pretty predictable, even for a kids' film. But really, I can't complain too much - it was fun, and enjoyable and had a bunch of funny moments. And, of course, the animation was beautiful and all the voice-work was good.

Bland but agreeable enough prequel gets most of its juice from Goodman and (especially) Crystal's lovely voice work and endearing characters; what ultimately amounts to a kid-ified retread of a "slobs vs snobs" high school comedy is a little too familiar and predictable to resonate like the best of Pixar, but is still a lot of fun.

Very corny and cliche, especially when compared to the first Monsters movie. Not a terrible film by any means, and I like the way the ending was handled, but besides that it does nothing new and nothing exceptional, and it got a little too heavy-handed with its "believe in yourself!" and "power of teamwork!" messages. An inferior prequel in pretty much every regard aside from the animation quality.

Although it suffers a tad from PPS (Pointless Prequel Syndrome), it is great to be back in this universe of monsters again, especially in a university setting (which portrays college less arrogantly than shlock comedy films do). Joke-wise, this movie is consistent, multiply layered, and is hilarious for anyone of any age. It's not one of the most well animated films I've ever seen (although it does look terrific), but it may be the most impressive and most detailed.

Although it understandably doesn't hold the same kind of magic as "Monsters, Inc." and although sometimes the mechanics of the plot don't feel particularly original, this prequel is consistently enjoyable and engaging, not to mention that it somehow holds its fair share of surprises to boot, including the existence of the entire last act past the Scare Games part, and the finale, which doesn't give in to the easy happy end recipe and shows consideration for the kind of message the story conveys.

Monsters University feels like a minor Pixar effort, it's because its appeal hinges almost entirely on viewers' established affection for Mike and Sully. Echoing but rarely enriching the pleasures of the original, the film is a charming footnote. Pixar can and has done better. Having now made a prequel, a couple sequels, and an old-school princess adventure, perhaps it's time John Lasseter and company got back in the business of exploring new worlds.

I had two problems with this movie. First is the fact that I loved the first one so much that I ended up super disappointed and second Monsters University has got to have the most generic cliched story ever. The story is pretty much the same high school/college story that the Disney channel spews out every month or so with it's bad jokes and super heavy handed life lessons. I would have liked it a little better if it was an unrelated story or if I hadn't like the first so much, but hey I did.

A lot of the humor is really funny (even if a lot of it is lifted from Animal House and the like), and it doesn't take itself too seriously... but it's not exactly a movie that was in any way necessary. Monsters, Inc. was such a good standalone movie, we really didn't need anything more on top of that. For a Pixar movie, I really think it should have more of its own identity than "that prequel to Monsters, Inc."
