Not unenjoyable but far from inspired. The script feels like a first draft, and the gimmicky look-at-our-3-D gags were annoying. At least Ginormica was hot.

With an injection of humour and a satirical hommage to the monster movies of the 50's, along with some particuarly notable references to a certain 70's sci-fi, the production provides plenty of entertainment for those familiar with the genre and replicates many memorable scenes to good effect. Sadly beyond this and a couple of characters with more great references in tow, the film feels hollow and soon falls back on the predictable Dreamworks formula. Bolstered by a entertaining script.

A few funny jokes, but about ten points from my score are solely for Stephen Colbert. Even he had a few awkward, unfunny moments, though. An interesting idea, but the execution was a bit too predictable.

At least it's not Bolt. Even though almost all the jokes fall flat, the film does have some incredible action sequences that impress even when you're not watching them in 3-D. Although it's a little slow to take off, once the Monsters start going to town on the aliens, the film smartly doesn't waste much time sitting around talking. As long as you're okay with all the cleverness being confined to mostly thrilling chases and beautifully realized action sequences you'll be fine.

Puzzlingly inconsistent film starts brilliantly; in its clever, witty screenplay and eccentric sensibilities of its characters, this seems destined to rival the best of the SHREK series. Unfortunately becomes conventional (and sluggish) in its second half, relegating most of its characters to bland action movie archetypes; apparent stunt casting of Colbert becomes the highlight of the movie – the STRANGELOVE-ian scenes between him and Sutherland’s military man are worth the price of admission!

I didn't really like the animation. It almost seemed like they tried to make the humans as hideous as the monsters. The humor is very hit-and-miss and at times almost uncomfortable to sit through. And it really hurts to see Stephen Colbert deliver lines that are just lame.

Not the best animated film, but still sweet and fun. And, for all the predictability, I was surprised (but pleasantly so) by how the film ended up. Bob is hilarious. The animation was good. The film does have some pretty unique twists on a classic story. And there's a nice moral to the story about acceptance (by yourself and others), who your friends are, and, of course, good vs. evil. :) Recommended.

I really had fun with this movie. It's not the best animated movie of all time but it is pretty funny, the animation is top notch, and the voice acting was very well done. I really enjoyed the throw-backs to old school monster movies. The actual part involving the alien was probably the lamest part, but it wasn't so bad that it ruins the entire movie.

As fun as it may be to hate on Rogen for being in everything, what a treat it is that he is in everything. Especially this, where his stoner delivery makes a character with no personality at all the most memorable in the film. The 3D is gorgeous but gimmicky, and the message is tacky and cliche even for family fare. The movie is basically Rampage! meets Destroy All Humans, but it's got a loaded cast reading a very witty script that scores a number of big laughs. Turn your brain off and it's fun.

A mildly fun sci-fi kids movie, with emphasis on the "kids" - WALL-E or even Kung Fu Panda this is not, it's shallow as a saucepan and mostly centered around 3D gimmicks and Saturday morning cartoon action scenes on a larger scale. I did like seeing a female protagonist in this sort of movie, though. Seth Rogen has the funniest line delivery.

Decent, but feels like the creative forces behind it were destined for, and indeed hopeful of making, something beyond the kid-friendly feature this ends up being. The endless amount of film references, the engaging characters (including the most inspiring female hero I've seen to date) and the occasional good wit and clever script is all made moot by being set aside the mass of dumbed-down and retarded kid-friendly jokes. Wonderfully made but ultimately crippled by its own target audience.

Stamped on with the current 3-dimensional clique, Monsters vs. Alien is a merry and winsome although obnoxious animated sci-fi spectacle. It numerously hits a number of big laughs, mostly from Seth Rogen's supposedly mindless and notably gelutinous indestructible blue blob and the main highlight and aspect of the film that is in large groups drawing the paying audience into seeing it: The 3D iself. It's gorgeous, luxurious and ultimately grand in it's sumptous yet moronic standard. Decent.

Spattering moments of laughter are not frequent enough to lift an otherwise pedestrian effort. Seth Rogen gets the best delivered one liners and his character has the best visual gags as well.

The finest 3D I have ever seen. Everything involving Seth Rogen's Blob is brilliant. An excellent cast, cool 3D action scenes, and enough "adult" humour, "inside" humor, and sci-fi movie homages makes this the best a children's movie called "Monsters Vs. Aliens" could be.

You can see it coming from a mile away thanks to the douchey Derek, but the character arc for Susan is a nice one ("I'm not going to shortchange myself ever again!"), adding substance to the bare-bones plot, while appreciably not feeling the need to pair her off with someone else at the end. A great gaggle of quirky secondary characters, meanwhile, keep the chuckles coming quite consistently (Rogen's dimwitted blob monster is a standout: "I think that jello gave me a fake phone number").

Monsters vs aliens is smart and funny! A story about one girl, what happens to her and the challenges she faces. And it's funny. Very funny, in an adult, dry and quirky way. It's not trying to be generic, which seems to be what some reviewers want. It's not trying to be a spectacle, like other reviewers expected it to be. It's just a well told comedy about this girl Susan. (from a review by LOQUE9 on imdb)

It is a kid movie so I judge it as such, and I think kids could find it funny, even with some of the more obscure jokes for adults, or even if it is not the movie of the year. The characters can be interesting, some funny too without using fart jokes, and there is a little something both for boys and girls. The character design for humans is horrible however; realistic skin texture on such deformed features make the humans creepy.

I loved the movie's homages to 50s and 60s B-movies. I loved the way it inverted the expected sexism. I loved the way they played with scale and depth in the animation. I loved Colbert as the President and Rogen as the mindless blob. I loved the corny jokes they threw in everywhere. I think I loved it a little too much. At the end of the day, the kids-oriented plot never gives it a chance to be a masterpiece, but I still fully enjoyed myself.

It's a tragedy that such a talented, star-studded cast were given such an unfunny and unimaginative script to work with. I felt like it strained so hard for laughs with every joke and ultimately failed; the plot contains zero surprises. As for the animation, although it's exquisitely detailed, I found the humans were downright creepy (the way the eyes and mouths moved, or possibly the exaggerated design of them), and the action choreography was lacking. Don't expect another Kung Fu Panda.

About as mindless as the gellatenous B.O.B. It looks good and has it's amusing moments, but not at all spectacular. If only a studio could get talent like Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, and Stephen Colbert to headline a live action movie without any of the constraints of a PG rating, they could have had a much better movie on their hands.

It's probably technically a better movie than I like to give it credit for, but dear God was I bored watching this. None of the humor was funny, none of the characters were interesting, and I just sort of found myself drifting off or zoning out through the whole thing. I could see kids finding this fun (unlike a few of the worst Dreamworks pictures), but there is almost nothing here for the adults in the audience.

This animated film was more than just a goofy comedy. The movie on the surface seems to be for kids, however has many deeper lessons in it. The movie is about an alien from a planet far away that comes to earth to take it over. The planet's only protection comes from monsters and a giant woman. The US Army keeps this small group in a prison even though they never committed any crimes. The movie was comedic relief as well as an eye opener to some problems that are still faced in today'

I feel as though I didn't even watch "Monsters vs. Aliens". It effected me so little that the moment I stepped out of the theatre, any tone or message placed within the flick had disappeared with the popcorn formerly in my bag. The references to old sci-fi flicks were appreciated, but I feel as though they weren't exploited as much as they could have been. An all-star cast feels squandered here. The funniest part of the entire film was the decision to include Seth Rogen's signature laugh to Bob.

It amazes me how far we have come with animation in the last twenty years. As far as the animation goes, this was visually beautiful. The story on the other hand had all kinds of potential, even for a kids movie, but it really didn't live up to it or the hype. The story was alright and kind of fun, but it really didn't pack the punch it could have. That seems to be kind of the problem with these kind of animated movies. Not the best stories. Amazing cast and great voice work. For kids.

A battle royale where the main Monster is not really, and the Aliens are, actually, just a singular 1. Way to go, claphappy title creator. However this film's issues would be easily overlooked if its comedy weren't so clearly shoehorned into the plot it tries to create. I love obscure movie references but I dunno if kids these days even know who Beverly Hills Cop (or Eddie Murphy, for that matter) is.

"Monsters vs. Aliens" continues DreamWorks recent general improvement from the total crap to actually making some mildly entertaining movies. The interaction between the five main monster characters is great, and funny, but screen time given to any other characters is flat, dull and often typical DreamWorks cliché nonsense when it comes to the jokes. Still, even with an ineffective villian, "Monsters vs. Aliens" will entertain just enough to make it worth watching.
