An excellent premise and stunning scenes of a war torn part of the world mean precious little when the titular Monsters are in the film for all of 10 minutes at most, with the rest of the screentime devoted to tedious travel arrangements and a tepid romance between two dull charmless characters.

I was impressed with the economy of the storytelling. Managing to create the environment with practically no money is a testiment to how far you can go with ingenuity. Also, I love the idea of by a sleight of hand turning what was ostensibly going to be a monster movie into a romance. The problem, turning out to be a major one, is that the romance, along with the characters, are completely unbelievable. With better direction of the actors and/or better actors this might have been good.

Essentially a offbeat indie romance/road movie starring Cthulu's extended family. I have a great appreciation for this sort of guerilla movie-making, but unfortunate the main characters are too underdeveloped to carry the story.

A low-key love story set on an alien infestation backdrop with a touch of social allegory that doesn't overreach its bounds. Despite a handful of flaws, I still marvel at what Gareth Edwards has achieved with what little he had. And that ending was just achingly beautiful. Much much better than the hundreds of big budget crap major studios put out each year.

After seeing the trailer for a film called MONSTERS, I was expecting a cross between 'District 9' and 'Godzilla'. Accepting the fact that this was made on a lonely $15000 budget heightens what follows. Much to my surprise, this turned out to be a romantic film in the vein of 'Before Sunrise' with monsters as the backdrop. My only real complaint was that the characters could be a bit more explored but considering the budget and genre originality, its hard not be impressed.

The post-'Alien invasion' backdrop is so refreshingly mature in concept and execution, that you end up banging your head against the TV when you realize that the actual story is about nothing at all. The effects, the tension building, the exposure of the creatures, all these things are impressively handled, but to what end when they're never an interesting part of the main story, which - as I mentioned - is really, seriously about nothing at all.

The comparison to District 9 or any other sci-fi film is an easy one to make, but it's unjust. If there's one thing I liked about Monsters, it's that it did its own thing. Its own atmosphere, its own pace, its own style. A lot of things wrong with this one, but considering the nonexistent budget, it's hard to hold a grudge. The leads were perfect, and Edwards' craft was impressive all across the board. Spectacular ending. Grows on you not only as it progresses, but in the hours after it's over.

Quiet, smart, and engaging. It doesn't try to overstate any of its aspects which attributes to its success. The creatures (which, for the record, are very cool), the character depth, and the settings are all given just enough treatment to keep us interested without showing or telling us everything.

Monsters did not impress me. From the misleading opening to the fact that once I accepted that it was a drama, it still wasn't entertaining. The script is the biggest detractor, which gives the characters awful dialogue and uninteresting and unrealistic situations. The film looks nice, and for its low budget, the monsters it has do look pretty good. It's just that we needed more of them, as well as some characters we could believe in. Because we don't get either, Monsters fails.

Once thing I liked was that the aliens weren't really villains. They didn't attack unless provoked. I mean, despite the obvious allegories that that implies, it's just an interesting thing for alien invasion movies in general. I think they could have gone into more depth with the characters but regardless, it's a good movie.

Entirely different (and more enjoyable) than what I expected. Instead of an action-based alien monster movie, we're treated to a meandering journey that's more concerned with the protagonists' growing relationship than the creatures in the background. Yes, it could have benefited from a better script and better CGI, but the boldness of concept, the atmosphere it builds, and the brilliant ending make this well worth watching.

Perhaps counter-intuitively, this movie actually lives and dies on the performances of the two central characters, rather than the monsters of the title. Plenty of tension, both in terms of scares and drama, and an interesting idea executed really well. Top stuff.

A real surprise. I was expecting a Cloverfield type movie when it's actually closer to 'Before Sunrise' or 'In Search of a Midnight Kiss'. There were some truly beautiful shots in this film, the directing was great, as was the cgi. Nothing really happens but the film just flew by, the acting was good and the script was ok. It's a quiet film, with nothing too memorable about it, which is my only real complaint. Amazing stuff for such a small budget though.

I didn't know I had to do homework before I watch a movie. Someone recommended it and I watched it. Crazy, I know. Now I find out it's all cheap and crafty and blah blah blah. Here's the facts: This movie looks way way way more expensive than Primer and I would rather watch Primer ten times over before I make a trip for the border with these two again. The characters were rich with depth and wholly uninteresting. Fiance? Son? How about more of the title?

Genre movies with sociopolitical allegories gives me a hard-on. Don't expect an action film, or overtly artistic film. It's actually a romance story, a travel story, a discovery-of-self story. At first I was sceptical about acting, but by the end of the film I was in love with those little gestures Whitney Able did to create her character. You can say it's a meditative film; the pace is slow, so sit back, relax, and enjoy beautiful views and sounds. Ambient score by Jon Hopkins is ace.

It's always easy to criticise and to say what's not good and so on. But if you consider, that Gareth Edwards did this with more or less 15.000 Bugs, he deserves much respect. Furthermore I really like the patient style and all the beautiful shots of the landscape, different from the other modern ADS sickness Horror Flicks nowadays. So, who knows what this Director will create in the future. I'm curious about it.

Neat take on the monster genre. A bit slow paced at some points and the sense of immediate danger could have been more present. Also the romance, which is what the movie is really about, lacks in the dialogue- and acting-department. Too bad, because the general idea is really great. Give it a shot, but don't expect it to be the next District 9 or Cloverfield or you'll sit through the entire thing waiting for all hell to break loose, which it doesn't. Bonus points for effort and the final scene.

"Monsters" was a slight disappointment. Of course, we knew that the budget was going to be low, yet the monsters ended up quite underused despite being surprisingly well-made and effective. The scenes in which they appear are probably the best part of an otherwise relatively uneventful road movie-cum-romantic drama. Unfortunately neither character has much to offer so this doesn't really work as a character study either. With no big climax, the satisfaction it offers remains sporadic and small.

The biggest mistake in this movie was the title. It has nothing to do with monsters. Well, they exist but the idea of the story was an exotic romance in less romantic environment. And very well done story (as well as the effects). Monsters were harmless as long as you do not disturb them. It was America who tried to cover their biggest blow. The story was too settle for monster scifi flick. Leads acted nicely together. Whitney Able was full of small interesting nuances. Love it.

Most of the film's strengths come from the leads' chemistry, relationship, dialogue, human struggle and their interactions with the characters they meet. Production design and locations were very impressive. As a horror or sci-fi film, less would have been more, as the money-shot scenes felt anticlimactic compared to the earlier atmospheric build-up and unseen threat. The ending was loose and messy. Director has potential but needs a more rigid story structure. Now why am I craving calamari?

An impressive technical achievement, efficiently and effectively filmed on a comparatively minuscule budget with only a tiny cast and crew. However foregoing this reveals a relatively mundane experience, with little to merit beyond an interesting premise. The cephalopod inspired monsters themselves are particularly intriguing, presented in a similar mysterious-glimpse style as in Darabont's The Mist. I wish I liked it more but it falls into middle ground, interesting but not overtly impressive.

Little surprise, given its improvised and shoestring production, that the script isn't a strength, but it's bolstered by a sense of awe - recalling both Jurassic Park and the reverent nature photography of Aguirre/Apocalypse Now - and fleshed-out characters. The overall tone and pacing are way more fitting than what edwards did with godzilla. Some people just can't handle a big budget...it seems to rather impair their creativity. however, his characters in focus are exactly the same type of redundant, boring and completely unlikeable. Too bad, because everyone besides them is doing a really good job at giving authenticity to the setting. I'd rather have followed one of those mexicans on their journey any day.

Monsters is not an action adventure in the footsteps of Godzilla, Cloverfield or any other movie where the spectacle of destruction is the main event. Monsters starts in the aftermath of such films with a post-apocalyptic tone to the proceedings which are refreshingly character driven. The story manages to alternate between the suspense of external peril and the slow burn character development without resorting to the cliche obstacles or melodrama, putting bigger budget films to shame.

For the amount of time the two characters spend dawdling despite the death and destruction all around them, you'd think they'd be better developed by the end. The chemistry fails by being forced too soon in the story, and there's an infuriating sense that they suffer from amnesia based on how often they seem to forget about the monsters and the slaughter they've been witness to. It seems like they wanted to make an immigration parable, but in context of this plot it makes absolutely no sense.

Intriguing sci-fi premise basically squandered in bland film, reminiscent of Shyamalan's SIGNS but without the squirmy unease that made that film great. Had the makings of a terrific political allegory as to how western society treats "monsters"/outsiders, but moments of tension (an encounter with a crazy local worked quite well) evaporate quickly, especially when there is no real payoff or meaning to the motives of the monsters. The two uncharismatic leads are the final nails in the coffin.

Perhaps the real story here is the story of its improvised, low budget production, which is certainly laudable. Unfortunately that doesn't really help the film as a whole, the lack of a solid script hurts and it's often dragged down by cliches. But in spite of this it does manage to build a great atmosphere, fully realizing the world it is set in, and there are some genuinely terrifying moments. Gareth Edwards is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

I appreciate what it's going for - a monster movie where the monsters are shoved to the periphery so that more time can be spent on characters and mood - but I really don't think it did enough with this premise, and it doesn't help that the romance plotline doesn't work all that much. For low-budget filmmaking "Monsters" accomplishes more than most. If you're looking for sheer atmosphere and mood then seek no further, but forget any hopes of cheap scares or gritty action sequences. "Monsters" is a simple trek through an infected alien zone for two Americans searching for a new ripple in their lives while trying to make their way home. Though the film shares glaring similarities with 'District 9,' the two couldn't be more different in terms of tone and scale. Recommended.

'Monsters' is uneven to say the least. There were several moments where I just rolled my eyes and held back a facepalm. On the flipside, there are even more moments of awe inspiring beauty and it can be quite emotionally engaging at times. Whilst I detest his views on CGI, I have massive respect for Edwards, I still struggle to believe he made this on the budget he had. Supposedly a monster movie, but with hardly any monsters. The film is well shot and the CGI isn't all that awful for a 500k budget 2010 release. The main issue is that the film is a drama, with unimpressive acting, uninteresting characters, a disappointing script, and relatively slow pacing. The two leads are great together (they are married in real life after all) and their chemistry pushes the film forward as the plot meanders and takes its time. I liked it. The story was something new in a relatively worn out genre. The love story felt very natural and authentic. I thought the two main actors (McNairy and Able) did a very good job. The only real complaint I could have was that the monsters looked kid of lame (giant walking squids that sounded like whales). They weren't awful, but the first time I saw them I laughed. A very good film for 'Youtube standards'.

Some interesting ideas awash in typical indie "we have an idea but no scenes" editing to convey story and character. Coincidentally, Able and McNairy's story ended similarly in real life to the movie.

Amazing cinematography and production design. A lot of good ideas here, however it has some of the worst dialogue I've ever heard, like porn film bad. The male lead is also atrocious. Scenes and sequences are jaw droppingly beautiful, which made me want this to be so much better.

So the creatures are sort of mexicans -- and they are about to reach US --, and they are big, ugly, don't speak english and threatens everything US citizens have -- you know, the suburbs, the jobs. It's interesting to notice that these two leads care for each other while on the road, abroad, and have their relationship as soon as they get to US -- after seeing an alien couple in a love scene --, where fear means masks, warnings and dudes with guns marking perimeters. Both impressive and dull.

Monsters obviously goes for a commentary on the American war machine, with television showing nothing but modern war porn, references to Agent Orange, and of course the wonderfully worn-out Ride of the Valkyries motif. For someone in an American suburb getting all their information from war-profiteering media, the USA might just as well be fighting literal monsters. Unfortunately the movie doesn't seem to have anything profound to say about the subject and quickly becomes preachy.

While there's some very good filmmaking on display, lot's of wordless plot development and great world-building, especially considering the minuscule budget, where it ultimately fails is the story itself. The main duo are fairly realistic and flawed, although their chemistry feels ham-fisted. Despite everything that was laid out, this is just a "Point A-to-B" travel film at it's core and honestly just got boring after a while. Good effort, but a pity. Didn't need the monsters at all!

One of the lamest monster movies I have seen. I mean, I have nothing against the 'not showing the monster too much' approach. But they took it too far here. You almost never see the monsters and when you do, it's not scary at all. I could barely watch it to the end. Verdict: Monsters has no mentionable qualities at all, so there is no reason to watch it. PS: A mediocre movie with a low budget is still a mediocre movie. PS 2: I thought the leads were lovable, though, and Able has nice legs.

it's like a super low-budget version of District 9, only with a tacked on love story and barely any interaction with the aliens. Why bother?
