Very good in parts, film suffers from a general uneveness in tone, and a central character (Gyllenhaal) whose motives make very little sense. Almost rescued and redeemed by Hoffman, who is heartbreaking as the grieving father, and Sarandon as his wife, who has her own ways of working through her grief. Moments of uncomfortable humour clang rather badly with the intense drama; I wish the focus of the film had been tilted towards the grieving parents. A misfire, but still interesting.

Contrary to the storyline, the film isn't as sad or depressing as you might expect, so don't shy away from it thinking it's going to be a maudlin tearjerker. This is a film about letting go of people lost, and if you can relate, credit Silberling for making as entertaining a tale of coping as one might reasonably expect.

Talented cast performs but they don't have a lot to work with. Some good moments are offset by some boring gaps.

A very lovely drama about three lives forever altered by one malicious act.

A sadly wasted opportunity...

It's about ten times better than City of Angels, but given what we know about Brad Silberberg, why does this film still seem unpersonal and Hollywoody?

Refreshingly honest look at grief, though slightly less than compelling. Doesn't leave much of an impression, but I didn't hate watching it or anything.

"Trouper that he is, a remarkable Gyllenhaal transcends Silberling's most calculated moves." - Ed Gonzalez

Centered around a sad story. Ellen Pompeo is gorgeous in this film. Jake Gyllenhaal is good but Susan Sarandon really steals the show, she is so good and her character felt real and genuine. Dustin Hoffman was adequate but not natural. It's the subplots that make the movie good. Dealing with death, loss and mourning are never easy subjects, but this movie satisfactorily takes you across the barrier between grief and getting one with your life. It's worth watching if not great.

Very strange film about grief. Strange in a really good way. Silberling presents circumstances in a really unique way and its really enjoyable to watch. Not sure if i ever can be so calm when this kind of tragedy happens to touch me. Movie has good pace and great actors.

A likeable but unremarkable little film.

I wanted more meat on the bone, but good performances all around, and some cathartic moments paid off.
