More American Graffiti

All those characters I like and remember doing stuff I don't like that are unmemorable.

Rambling sequel actually works better than the original, ambitiously juggling different film-making styles to contrast the continuing lives of our heroes to middling but interesting success. Split-screen is most always an irritating gimmick, but the stripped back Vietnam sequences contrast well with LeMat, Howard, Clark etc. on the homefront. A lumpy but overall worthwhile brew.

The film is creatively directed and has some great cinematography, but the screenplay is dull and without substance. It seems to drag on forever. Overall, it's just kind of a bummer of a film. It lacks the entertainment, flow, lightheartedness, naivety, adventure, and humor of the first. There's a lot going on here, as all the characters have gone separate ways, but its lack of cohesion is frustrating. If you haven't watched the sequel but enjoyed the first one, do yourself a favor and skip it.
