This has quite a few interesting and impressive aspects, not just the unusual and inventive aesthetic decisions, or the use of one actress for both main roles, or the idea of making a cat’s eye perspective crucial to the unfolding of the narrative, but also the characteristics of the milieu, which are difficult to identify either in time or place. Still, the material itself is only of limited interest, and the music often seems to work against the intended mood.

Morgiana estreava há 50 anos na Tchecoslováquia. Herz é um completo mestre de sua arte, infelizmente foi podado aqui pela burocracia comunista não o deixando fazer o queria, o livro de Grin era sobre dupla personalidade e embora ainda há resquícios disso no filme de Herz (como os jogos de espelho e o fato das duas personagens serem interpretadas pela mesma atriz), não era exatamente da forma que queria, mas o que deu pra fazer ainda é deslumbrante. Herz downplayed the quality of Morgiana by describing it a film he made to practice his skills, like a stylistic exercise made on assignment, but that is too harsh an assessment. While it lacks Cremator's allegorical strength and a character as perversely original as Kopfrkingl, it's a captivating gothic fairy tale about the destructive power of envy that is visually arresting and features a strong performance by Janzurová in the dual role of the good and evil sister respectively.

Superb sets, costumes and make-up create a resplendent aesthetic for Herz' elegant Gothic melodrama, but certain plot points, notably the resolution, can feel a little too contrived, and this does the film a greater disservice than it deserves. Iva Janzurová is wonderful in a dual lead role, especially as the villainous Viktorie.

That the women were biological and no drugqueens - was weird for me, but it was the right choice. After all, this movie does exhibit the beuty there is in natural naturality.

Okay, so it's not as good as The Cremator but what the fuck is? (Answer: Robocop). Watching this stylish, dark and deliciously overwrought melodrama is like having an albino midget slapping you in the junk for something like 90 minutes while he screeches italian sonnets into your face: Classy, yet oh so wrong. Still, I approve. Because alcohol.
