Morris from America

Standard Sundance-fare. Would have preferred to see much more of the father-son relationship and less of Mo being beaten down by love.

This humanistic take on a coming-of-age/fish-out-of-water story offers a vision of life that sees value in and real formation from the mundane activities of life--an encounter with a bully, a conversation with a stranger, or discovering some piece of knowledge about a friend or family member. The father/son chemistry is quite good, and Hartigan's light touch with the material keeps the maudlin at bay.

That pillow thing was sick, man!

This movie was a delight. After this and Mr. Robot, I just want Craig Robinson to star in more and more things. He's wonderful as a pretty lonely dad in this film. Markees Christmas and Carla Juri were the two breakout performers here though. Even when the writing lacked, their performances didn't, especially Christmas.

A nice take on half Spike Lee coming of age film with all the stuff you expect -- first love, first drugs, first parties, first freestyling like a motherfucker in an ecstasy-fueled party -- coming together strangely, but often well shot and designed, with an arthouse teen German film. A good eye for characters makes this sound better than the cliches it employs.

MORRIS FROM AMERICA rises on the unassuming beauty of its father-son relationship, a wonderful expression of ties that bind--especially in the case of two African-American men stuck in the middle of Germany. It's unfortunate that the movie tends to ration this element, moving slowly through traditional coming-of-age mishaps with a surprising lack of energy, and seems to end as soon as it starts to reach a high point. Craig Robinson is particularly strong in an against-type performance.

Nice light entertainment.

The cultural shock portrayed is quite interesting. But the circunstances involving "Morris" seem quite forced, great part of what happens to Morris seem very unlikely to happen irl. The german actors deliver terrible acting here, to the point that it affects the result of the movie. Maybe the ideas and the screenplay are not bad, but the movie isn't really able to properly express what the screenplay intended to show.
