I thought this was the shit as a 13-year old. This is the benchmark for knowing how bad my taste used to be. Half-watching it as we speak. It's so goddamn dumb and cheesy and, well, hm, the sets are kinda fun, and the music's actually pretty cool at times and hey I realise this movie kickstarted my interest in Fear Factory & Orbital and helped me shape my taste in music an-AHAHA Johnny Cage did a Friendship I totally forgot and oh god I realise I still kinda like this glorious, glorious shite.

Johnny Cage slapstick and oneliners then Christopher Lambert shoots his lunatic mouth off. About 25 minutes in there's this shot of Lambert standing behind a temple door as it slowly closes and it's so awkward and slow and I'm still hooting thinking about it

It doesn't take a genius. Cast people that look like the characters, make most of the movie fighting, and hire someone that's already pretty cheesy to begin with to play the cheesiest role. Street Fighter failed on all three of those levels.

I think the scene where Cage has to tell the stunt actor to fall down is actually a clever joke about the fatality window - and that's about all I managed to appreciate more as an adult. It is real shitty. There aren't any memorable fights, the plot has no drive, Kano is somehow the only likable character. Still, there is an undeniable nostalgia I have for this ridiculous trainwreck. Hollywood, time to hit the reboot button!

So truthful to its source material, even this film's cheesy B-movie-ness seems sincerely intentional. The actors play their archetypes well, and the Bruce Lee-inspired tournament plot works wonders in fleshing out the video game's concept. While the special effects have certainly not aged well, beautiful intricate sets are extremely impressive.

"I'm in a hostile environment. I'm totally unprepared. And I'm surrounded by a bunch of guys who probably want to kick my ass... it's like being back in high school." WHAT?!?!? I realize this is a video game movie but being faithful to the game would have been enough. You don't need to appeal to the nerds that are going to go see this.

Man that theme song is everything right and wrong about '90's pop culture and I'm here for every nonsensical grunt played to its bitchin' beat. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa plays Shang Tsung with absolutely no shame and as a result probably elevates this cheese-fiesta. On that note every character is awful YET YOU LIKE THEM SOMEHOW and more terrible films can learn from that.

Mortal Kombat initially garnered a large fanbase and lasting notoriety on account of its ultra-violent content, and thus a bloodless big screen adaptation designed to accommodate younger audiences was always bound for failure. The acting and dialogue are as atrocious as would be expected, but there isn't a single decent fight scene either.

The only film I have seen which really is so bad that it is good. Through the cheesy dialogue, poor upbeat 90's soundtrack, overly basic special effects and shallow plotline you somehow can't help but feel the mad spirit of the film shine through. All it does is entertain, be it in a rather unintentionally humourous way.

I loved this when I was eleven. Looking at it with adult eyes... It gets into the action immediately, in a brilliant manner, but bogs down a bit in the middle. Some fights are really built up but turn out anticlimactic, including the fight with Goro; others are impressive even now, using the amazing sets and drawing on the sheer weirdness of the games. The cinematography is great, and the CGI is terrible-great. Sonya gets damsel'd, the movie's lowest point, but it sure isn't ever boring.

A mindless, violent action film based on the bloody, visceral video game series doesn't need much of a brain to deliver thrills, does it? After seeing Mortal Kombat, I think it might. The characters in the movie do way too much talking, and very little of it makes sense. When the fighting scenes finally arrived, I found them lackluster and a little too PG. While this movie is far from the worst video game film adaptation, I still can't recommend it.

Surely one of the most 90's films ever made, M.K is a pure product of its time, and like most video game films it only works on a scene-to-scene basis. The cast is its greatest virtue: the actors generally look like the characters they are playing, and while nobody acts particularly well, at least they aren't taking it seriously. The fight scenes between Cage and Scorpion and Kang and Tsung are the obvious highlights, as is Clinton's propulsive techno score.

It's ok, doesn't take itself too seriously, but seriously enough that it's not too cheesy and the fights carry enough weight to keep the simple narrative going. It's a much better looking film than I expected, but the acting and writing are just barely acceptable quality.

Journey Begins 67. Kang okay sometimes bad. Cage okay. Sonya okay and babe. Raiden usually don't like. Tsung really good. Goro good. Some cool stuff in the meh fights. Song always fire. I love the story of mortal kombat. 10 wins take over realm. Lao beat Tsung so he got Goro. Love scorpion coming back for zero which they didn't really use. Love secret island and ship. Kitana babe. Kano pretty good. Lame zero water win. Tone too cheesy at times. Raiden pretty much always helped ruin tone

Objectively, this is just like any other Paul W.S. Anderson film; awkward, sort of pointless and with stupid acting. But Mortal Kombat has just the right amount of silly and outrageous hilarity that you just can't help but love it. It has cheesy one-liners, it has over-dramatized scenes, it is filled with rough and burly men (and women) and everything is just so overly intense that I can't help but be entertained by the stupidity of it all. Plus, it has Christopher Lambert. And he is awesome.

A reasonably faithful adaptation of the video game because there are a ton of fights (I'd say this film is really a series of fights strung together by a loose narrative). The fights aren't particular exciting though, but the environments are well-utilised. However, there's no gore like what the game had, but not that it'd be able to save the hokey acting and plodding storyline. Ehhh, but there's some cheese here to be enjoyed and the music kicks butt! Makes for better animated gifs than a film.

The video game was pretty campy so it's not surprising the movie follows suit. It does have some ridiculous charm to it. When it comes to video game movies there are three notable things to look at 1) kickass theme song? Mortal Kombat had it. 2) Strange CGI and villains? yes indeed. 3) 2nd and 3rd string actors hamming it up? Yep. The action choreography was at the geriatrics level but it was entertaining enough for what it was.

The acting is equal parts bland and funny -- Lambert laughing after explaining what MK is, then censoring himself, Cage's movie star self-awareness -- but PWSA delivers stunts, coreographed fights and a sharp look at what the games do best -- trap the characters in curious scenarios, like a pinewood forest (Cage vs Scorpion) fading to a hellish arena. A narrative concerned about its levels and inner mechanics of a true game of life and death taking place in both human and supernatural territory.

At the theater, the film caught on fire about half way through, so my best buddy and I chose to view that movie about a baby panda. However, curiosity got the best of us and the following week we paid, yet again, to see this movie. It must have been totally rad, otherwise we wouldn't have done that, hence the high score. Otherwise, I can't remember anything about it other than Sub Zero is my hero.

Films based on video games generally don't turn out very well, and this is no exception. The plot for Mortal Kombat is no different than any of the other countless "Enter the Dragon" ripoffs, and the characters are equally flat and lifeless. It's also pretty gimmicky, desperately seeking favor by having all the characters perform their signature moves. The games were kind of fun because you could make your friend die in a gruesome way, but even that prurient thrill is absent from the film.

As much as I like the video games and the theme song - "Mortal Kombat!" - this is a dull affair. Although the creature design for Goro is very cool, and Bridgette Wilson can pull one of the all-time great 'resting bitch faces' (evident also in 'Billy Madison' which was also released in 1995).

The best kind of bad. The kind you can laugh at. It's interesting though that a game known for its excessive violence & gory KOs should inspire such a bloodless product. Chris Lambert is hilarious. Such quietly overconfident charisma, wielding the most bizarre accent & a laugh that's somewhere between a witch cackling & a Pringle™ crunch. Points for practical puppetry, subtracted again for the shocking '90s CGI. More points shaved for a soundtrack that presumes you're in a nightclub.

Limp and tiring fantasy film lays out dull, convoluted (and incoherent) exposition that may play for fans of the game, but was baffling for this newbie - when they finally come, the fight scenes are decently choreographed but edited in a way designed to lessen or undermine their impact - an unholy and disorienting mix of long and short cuts. Score is almost entirely for the quite awesome 90s infused music score, a propulsive mini-masterpiece; a shame it matches nothing on-screen!

Released during an age where Video Game movies were always dogshit (we still haven't fully emerged from this age) Mortal Kombat 95 stood out as a cheesy low budget OTT action romp which pretty much fits perfectly with the source material and arguably does a better job than the recent big budget reboot, as at least it tells a complete story and not just the first act. It's a niche movie and it's fans will defend it to the death

I bumped this movie a full score just because I love video games and Mortal Kombat was one of the first instances of a video game movie being both true to the source and generally pretty cool. I will watch anything Christopher Lambert is in but most of it is pretty crappy. He does seem out of place here as Raiden but I will always associate him with this film so he left an impression. The producers left in just enough lore for this film to be interesting.

The effects in this one suck, but the actual fighting is much better than anything found in 2021. This is easily my preferred film (not just saying that as an Anderson fanboy). I like the fighting more, I like that it really leans into the campy aspects: skulls everywhere, sets designed like hell with cobwebs... This really feels like a dark, crazy place, not just a red cave. Plus, we're thrown straight into the death match tournament, and I'm a sucker for tournament movies.
