This is a sweet drama/comedy about culture clash. Robin Williams is brilliant as Vladimir, the Russian musician. Released at the height of the cold war in the 80's, this film helped to humanize the Russians for me. This movie captures the immigrant spirit of the country. There are flaws in the film to be sure, but they can be forgiven. The scene in the supermarket with Vladimir trying to buy coffee is one of my favorites of the film.

Full of endearing performances, perceptive and bittersweet moments -- but a few too many false endings. Williams is superb in the lead.

Truly a diamond in the rough. An extremely underrated film, and quite possibly Robin Williams' best performance.

I was quite surprised that Robin Williams could pull off something this dramatic this early in his career. Heart warming and whiule watching this made me feel good about the rights and priveledges that we do have.

Wonderful, warm, humanistic drama, anchored by Williams' marvellously subtle, underplayed lead performance (largely in convincing Russian no less) which may represent the best work of his career; Alonso no less effective in support, and the entire film is expertly populated with various ethnic performers to underscore America's cultural melting pot. Mazursky's direction and screenplay injects absurdist comic moments to great effect. A brilliant, genuinely patriotic and sorely underrated film.

The first part of the movie was nice, but for the most of the second part, meh.

Who knew Robin Williams had dramatic chops in 1984? The movie is a celebration of the immigrant's American dream, good and bad. It has its moments, but often doesn't strike the right tone, is too soft, too plodding, and the ending doesn't land.

I haven't seen Popeye or World According to Garp yet so this is actually the oldest Robin Williams movie I've seen. It's VERY earnest & cheesy & Reagan-era patriotic and I'm sure I'd have rolled my eyes if I saw it 20 years ago... but I've softened enough to more or less go along with its modest charms. Robin Williams' Russian language command is impressive in fairly long dialogue sequences in the first act. And let's face it I like that the hot Italian girlfriend character shows her boobs lol
