Lots of tropes and stereotypes at play here, but Gedeck and Castellitto (and presumably Nettelbeck in her direction) transcend these to deliver a surprisingly meaningful commentary on desire (of the sensual form) and its (self) denial.

Very sweet. German, blunt, well done. Feels both authentic and believable but also has the edge of drama and theatricalness that makes it engaging to watch. Skip the re-make unless you want to make it a double feature.
