Not nearly as good as Albert Brooks's 80's stuff, but still a fresher, more engaging and intelligent comedy than most. If you have parents you'll find it hard not to compare the mother character with your own. Brooks's character is always something else, though. He is never the "straight man", which rescues this from being a predictable generational satire. The interplay is most interesting when Rob Morrow as his brother enters the picture.

It doesn't have the bite of Brooks' best films (in fact, it takes a surprisingly sentimental approach considering his history), but it is an immensely likable little comedy, with the chemistry between Brooks and Debbie Reynolds adding up to some great fun.

What a hilarious movie! Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds are great together as mother and son. This movie is very realistic and funny writing. There is also a funny cameo by Lisa Kudrow.

Not quite up to par with Brooks's best work, but he and Reynolds have dynamite chemistry and there are enough laughs to overcome the almost unbearable schmaltz in the third act.

I liked it. While it doesn't exactly excite on paper, the premise is actually quite daring: a mother and son desperately trying to engage each other as equals and failing. Really, it's a movie about self-sabotage among the suburban middle class. Great stuff.

It's Brooks, so it's smart and funny, even if he is only playing Albert Brooks (again). Debbie Reynolds is perfectly cast. The tacked on ending was pretty weak though.

Reynolds is pretty amazing in this. Brooks tends to lay it on thick feeling the need to explain every emotion to us, but overall pretty charming and funny.

 Some funny moments but this is nowhere near as smart or touching as Brooks tries to make it. Kind of lame.

Albert Brooks's finest work. Highly believable mother/son dynamic, plus it's ragingly funny
