I really enjoyed the somewhat new spin on the thiller genre. You never really "root" for the bad guy here but the main character is certainly a bad, disturbed man. Costner is very good and William Hurt is fantastic. Even Dane Cook has a role that's well suited to his personality and he manages to pull it off. Top that all off with a great soundtrack and you've got an enjoyable film. Not great but enjoyable.

Very good movie. Nice to see K.Costner acting a serial killer. W.Hurt also plays a terrific badguy. The end was good but I expected more suspense. Worth-watching !

Although Costner's performance was quite favorable, the ending kinda destroyed the whole film. (for me though). When the end credtis rolled I asked myself: "was that whole story finished ? shouldn't they have filmed 10 more minutes to give us more closure ?"... apparently not, damn you Hollywood !!! Disappointed...

There's almost a winking charm behind the madness in "Mr. Brooks," an effective thriller featuring an entertaining performance from Kevin Costner as a successful businessman by day, twisted schizophrenic serial murderer by night.

What makes Kevin Costner a good and sometimes likable actor is the same thing that makes him a bad and sometimes detestable actor. Of course, that thing is that he's better than you and I. Too bad for us, I guess.

Undemanding but not unenjoyable thriller based on a quasi-psychoanalytic symbolic representation of addiction as the manifestation of a barely controllable drive that is to some extent divorced from the ego's desire and that is, if not divorced from pleasure, at least accompanied by suffering. Some narrative choices run counter to generic convention (partly in dashed hopes of further instalments), but the film's virtues also largely depend on the not inconsiderable charms of its three big stars.

Overall an enjoyable film, as long as you don't think too in-depth about the plot. Lots of twists and subplots that it feels like a cinematic roller coaster. William Hurt is amazing, and I love how he's always "in the back seat," both literally and figuratively. Costner is fine, but he falls flat at times. It's refreshing to see Dane Cook do something other than Rom-Com. And Demi Moore could've been left out of this movie completely. The ending left a bad taste in my mouth, but I won't spoil.

Great movie, the story-lines keep tumbling and tumbling, creating an avalanche of big and small twists and surprises. All the actors give an excellent performance. This is the best of Costner's movies. I took Costner some time after his Waterworld crap to get his act together but after the Guardian and this movie, he's back on my favourite actor list.

This took me from hating it to loving it. I had some bad feelings about it as I watched it, I saw it as some TV show(a poor man's Dexter, to be more precise), but though some things looked a bit too stereotypical to work, they took a turn in the right direction and everything ended up being enjoyable (though it did almost 'jump the shark'). I'm not sure how I feel about the soundtrack and ending, but what I do like is Costner's and also Cook's performance. All in all, a pleasant surprise.

Mr. Brooks tries too hard to be perfect. Costner gives us a competent performance in a role he hasn't played, Hurt is decent and even Dane Cook's acting fits his personality. Even though it has everything, Mr. Brooks remains one of the most predictable, pretentious and pompous serial killer thrillers in 2007.

A thriller with a chilling atmosphere and intruiging characters, but unfortunately, a kind of disappointing ending and a sometimes very misplaced soundtrack (e.g: during the shootout I felt like I was watching some superficial Charlie's Angels-Type action comedy instead of an intelligent crime/thriller).

This is pretty much what I wanted from The Barber (2014) both in plot and tone. This isn’t a great movie, but I was always entertained, and Costner is actually a solid choice for the lead role. It isn’t Dexter, but it was a great way to pass the time in spite of its flaws.

Entertaining watch, but ultimately feels hollow. Essentially a male fantasy of the perfect serial killer, who is totally uncatchable, he's successful in his career, has a gorgeous wife who never asks why he's gone all night every night and he manages to be a sympathetic father all the while. Very Dexter-esq., a near perfect execution of a heavily flawed concept.

Mr. Brooks tries too hard to placate the younger crowd with moments of fast-paced action that it forgets to be suspenseful. Just a dumb movie, really, but Costner does well, even if he has nothing on Michael C. Hall and this isn't exactly Silence of the Lambs.

A film which could have been something incredible - with Kevin Costner and William Hurt, as a serial killer and his id, in the centre of it with their great interactions - but manages to avoid any areas of interest with such a subject. It's as if the screenwriters of this were purposely writing a film that does not go anywhere with its opening promise, which is disappointing.

In thinking about this movie, it seems like it should have been better. It was actually probably my favorite Costner performance. Hurt and (weirdly) Cook were good in supporting roles, as well. And the plot was cool enough. For whatever reason, though, it just didn't push past being an enjoyable and somewhat forgettable diversion.

The basic story line was intriguing, a man struggling with an addiction to killing. Yet, the pace is completely off. The movie feels slapped together. The multiple plot lines were just too much. Excellent, outstanding movie. This is a thriller through and through, leading the viewer through ever-shifting subplots up to the grand finale. This movie kept me guessing all the way to the very end, and had the delectable feel of a universe where no character or event was random or without purpose. When a movie achieves that level of integration, it is pure pleasure to behold it. On top of that, Demi Moore, William Hurt and Kevin Costner were all exceptional in their roles. Loved it!

A brilliant, twisted, unique script. I loved the concept. I didn't, however, liked some of the acting. Demi Moore was misplaced in this movie. It was a role that was meant for someone else. Kevin Costner, although playing out of character, does, at times does his 'all american' drawl. But he pulls it off overall. A good movie; could have been better.

Far better than you would expect reading the cast list, Mr Brooks takes inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock and lays out all of the cards on the table early rather than holding out for inane plot twists and makes for well a paced, suspenseful film. A man addicted to murder (like Dexter) has to struggle with his inner demon (literally, as William Hurt) and try to hold his life together as his latest murder leaves an opportunistic witness and too many loose ends to kill his way out of.

Costner is surprisingly competent in a role where he's not playing himself, and Hurt is just awesome as his Dark Passenger, but the film surrounding them is something of a cluttered mess. There are good scenes here and there, and even Dane Cook gives a passable performance, but the tone is so inconsistent and Demi Moore may as well be acting in a different (and awful) movie. The ending is fucking terrible too and the movie just made me wish I was watching Dexter instead.

This movie lives in a post Dexter world, where we see the supposed everyday man being a serial killer who can't control his urges. The acting in this movie is good, not great but solid and convincing enough. But the whole movie goes a long at a weird pace and is just down right boring through a lot of it. Especially Demi Moore's cop plot line, which was hardly necessary. And this probably had the most oddly shot/edited shootouts ever in a movie.....it really had no spot in the movie.

In the vast desert that is the last 10-15 years of Kevin Costner acting career, this movie is an oasis of great acting. Costner is cruel and awesome as the cold blooded Thumbprint Killer. Normally if you play a stone cold killer and do it well people WILL remember you. BUT, note to Costner if you want to play an apathetic killer don't do it the same year as Bardem plays Anton Chigurh that's like playing a genius canibal the same year as Silence of the Labms! Once again bad luck to Mr. Costner.

Good acting from Costner in this somewhat more scary film than I thought about a businessman leading a double life as a serial killer. The soundtrack is typical of popcorn teenager films which deteriorated the mood for me a bit and while I sympathized with Costner's character in what was quite an entertaining storyline, there were some annoying improbabilities, underlined by a disappointing ending.
