Like other of Capra's better movies, this is baloney, but it's such well-done baloney you don't mind too much

I liked it, but the melodrama in the courtroom scene was so over the top, even for Capra.

A wonderful story that demonstrates how far common sense can take you. Mr. Deeds is a lovely, sweet, caring person who inherits $20 million. He's suddenly swarmed by people trying to get a share of it. What's charming about the film is that so many of the city folk think they can pull one over on Deeds because he comes from a small town and seems so mellow. But, even though Deeds might not know all the fancy terms, etc., he can still figure out when something isn't right. A most delightful film!

Well, I just love so much Jean Arthur that I just can't say anything more about this movie...

The super format for the ultimate feel good movie! Frank Capra knows how to make those! This one is about naive small town man, Gary Cooper, who inherits a bunch of millions and greedy moochers flock around him! This also gives Jean Arthur a much deserved push as a star actress. This had all the elements for truly happy and positive experience where the good guys are too good and the bad guys are socialite filth, yet it doesn't reach the climactic peak it should after such a long build up.

Pretty good. Typically socially conscient movie from Capra who in Cooper finds a star with a perfect capacity for playing indignated. His performance as Longfellow Deeds is the main draw of the film.

It's starts on the slow side, but gradually builds up to a climactic courtroom finale of dubious legal accuracy. Despite his penchant for unnecessary physical violence, Deeds surprisingly still remains on the likable side of things which is probably a testament to the strength of Cooper's acting. Overall, it's a decent film with Capra's love of small-town America and socialist undercurrents on full display.

It's a pretty standard story, and it gets pretty ridiculous and implausible at times. Doesn't really matter though, because Mr. Deeds is such a fantastically lovable character and it's all done in a way that works. Capra is a master at making something really cheesy really enjoyable, but this is in no way his finest effort. The Austrian psychiatrist somehow reminded me of an Austrian Sean Connery, which made for some enjoyment.

Charming despite its obvious flaws, and Capra deliver same message better in other movies it's still an enjoyable film with some funny moments interspersed throughout.

easily better than the remake with sandler and infinitely more sophisticated. this officially wins me over as a cooper fan, but i still don't like jean arthur very much.

This simple-natured fish-out-of-water tale is a classic heart filled romantic comedy. Possibly a product of the times, the movie has an old-fashioned warmth in the main characters and story sadly not found in the modern remake, "Mr. Deeds"(2002). This focus on the power of love over money resonated with audiences in the wake of the Great Depression as a well intentioned naive hillbilly is thrust into a corrupt city and exposed and dispels the greedy lawyer trying to stop his altruistic plans.

Missing the *oomph* of Capra's other sentimental hoo-ha. Still a pretty fun watch.

Gary Cooper plays the likeable everyman, thrust into the fantasy situation that everyone likes to imagine themselves in. The rest of the movie practically writes and acts itself. And yes, the love interest is predictable, the hurdles are predictable, his undoing and redemption are especially predictable if you've ever seen one of Capra's other films. I guess this was the blockbuster of its time and would be again today. Mr Cooper did fine but perhaps this is just too much schmalz for anyone?

This is a great old-fashioned fish-out-of-water kind of comedy. Stay away from the remake. It's less funny, less emotional, and overall less of a good story altogether.

Cheesy at times but a decent enough film. Adam Sandler was more charismatic in the role then Cooper was imo. The happy ending was pretty ridiculous and contrived and Jean Arthur really didn't deserve it but it happened anyway cause it's Frank Capra. Not bad, not great.

Comedy, drama, romance and populism fuses together in this touching film directed by one of Hollywood golden age greats Frank Capra. This film, made during great depression, is a product of its age; it is full of hope and inspiration. Main character, played by good-looking Gary Cooper, is a man of integrity, thrown into the world of self-interested, dishonest people. He kicks their asses in admirable manner, but falls for a lady (always big mistake) and gets tried for his character.

Cheesy, but not as chessy as "You can't take it with you"; lovely, but not as lovely as "It happened one night"; and certainly not as good as "It's a wonderful life". But a great movie nevertheless.

I can't truly criticize Capra for making incredibly simplistic films, thematically, since they all pretty much work despite that, but this one has none of the emotional involvement that usually comes with them.

Gary Cooper (or, more properly, Mr. Deeds) is the quintessentially American Jesus--dances to his own tune, feeds thousands, and refuses to defend himself of unjust attacks . . . until he does defend himself with facts and fists. American Jesus suffers, but never too much. And American Jesus always gets the girl in the end.

Doesn't touch Capra's other 1930's masterpieces (It Happened One Night, You Can't Take It With You & Mr. Smith) but it's still a worthwhile film. Certainly deserved more in remake stakes.

The first half of this is a lot of fun and has great pacing but the whole thing nearly screeches to a halt once the tone switches. And while Gary Cooper did well he came of as a bit stiff and uncomfortable at times.

Can we say naive? No, Mr. Smith in Washington was naive - Mr Deeds is over-the-top!

A film about the nicest and seemingly most naive man in the world winning over a city full of double crossing meanies! There's a few things that didn't quite make sense e.g. thousands of out of work farmers running amok in New York! But it warmed my heart and it made me laugh and I also thought the cast was great, especially Cooper and Arthur.

Feels like a less-interesting version of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Gary Cooper is charming (as are most Capra characters), but the movie just wasn't very entertaining to me.

Entertaining and sweet patriotic dramedy, yet another well meaning Capra production about cynical cities invaded by a key good hearted hillbilly. Ugly and problematic too, as it finishes in full socialist-patriotric fashion.

Gary Cooper lacks a certain onscreen charisma which detracts from the Capra charm. Still a great movie, though.

This is the same ground Capra would cover again, but better, in Mr. Smith (among others). Lovable quirky small-town good-hearted guy does battle with evil corrupt high-falutin' city folks. Good old fashioned American values! Some real implausibilities too (why is New York City overrun with out-of-work farmers??). And maybe the Austrian psychiatrist thing wasn't clichéd back then, but it sure is a groaner nowadays.
