2002
Romance, Comedy
1h 36m
When Longfellow Deeds, a small-town pizzeria owner and poet, inherits $40 billion from his deceased uncle, he quickly begins rolling in a different kind of dough. Moving to the big city, Deeds finds himself besieged by opportunists all gunning for their piece of the pie. Babe, a television tabloid reporter, poses as an innocent small-town girl to do an exposé on Deeds. Of course, Deeds' sincere naiveté has Babe falling in love with him instead. Ultimately, Deeds comes to find that money truly has the power to change things, but it doesn't necessarily need to change him. (imdb)

The Rob Schneider Project - day 12. Almost three years after the previous lab shut down under mysterious circumstances we've been hired to continue the thankless task of cataloging the effect of seeing Rob Schneider. Mr. Deeds offered little of The Schnei', but exposed the team to Sandler trying to force the viewer to love him. Gag-inducing and aggressively unfunny. Rob's cameo almost felt like a relief. This feeling? It... worries me. But the work must continue. Schneider-annoyance factor: 2

Schneider quest, film 12: After a hiatus of almost 3 years, the crew decided to continue the quest. Figured their mental wounds have healed over these years, they started this movie with great optimism. Instead of being nuked with awful Schneider faces, the crew got Adam Sandler instead. A whole new level of awfulness. We barely made it, and the 2 seconds of Rob felt like heaven. I felt bad for Turturro and Buscemi. What a movie to play in...

Adam Sandler has lots and lots and lots of money... and that's pretty much the film's whole plot and conflict. Though, credit where it's due, I did kinda laugh at the scene with all the cats.

What kind of father keeps his son as a butler, without telling him he's his son, and doesn't bother to leave a will? One in an Adam Sandler universe, apparently.

It's a fun movie. It doesn't go as hard with the jokes as other Sandler movies, but there are some good laughs there, and this nice guy role for Sandler is a pretty good one imo. It's nothing special, but it's a fun movie to come back to after a while.

Not as irritating or abrasive as many of Sandler’s 90s films, but still one of the worst in how sleepy and dull it is, sporadically coming to life through moments of over-the-top comic violence, seeming more incongruous enclosed in the bland surroundings. Sandler is a blank non-entity here (was this really the same year as PUNCH DRUNK LOVE?) and Ryder fairs worse, wobbling shakily between over-the-top pantomime and sleep walking. The opera singer fall was a fine scatological gag, if it matters!

Perhaps more than any of his other films, Mr.Deeds represents Sandler's updated throwback tendencies, his desire to be loved as a Jimmy Stewart type with rougher edges. He is more endearing here than in Big Daddy, but it is not particularly funny, and despite being surrounded by talent, only Turturro generates any real laughs. Ryder also proves why she was quickly relegated to the sidelines in the new millennium.

Adam Sandler attempts to bring a more subdued than usual performance to this fish out of water tale with a silly broad twist on a the classic "Mr.Deeds Goes to Town"(1936). Unfortunately, this attempt by Sandler & friends to bring the tale to modern audiences nearly 70 years later falls short in capturing the heart and quaint simple charms of the original. However, Sandler fans should find the film to have enough laughs throughout to enjoy.

One of the better off the latter day Adam Sandler movies, Mr. Deeds had a lot of fun moments. There was quite a bit of audience appeal in the movie which didn't overwhelm the movie. John Turturro was the a bright star shining down on this shluby cast. Winona Ryder proved that she could be a knockout leading lady. I really wonder why she wasn't used in that way more. I've never seen the original but this update was a fun movie.

For me it's quite funny, smart and warm movie. Funny, because servant's skills and fetishes are making him probably the best hero of the whole production :D Smart, because it does say money can't buy happiness (but in general, it's still a stupid comedy, sorry folks). Warm, because everyone *SPOILER* is happy at the end, the gal finds a warm home and someone to be with and the guy although being a "loser" manages to end all matters with benefits for those who need it. Nice mov(i)e, Steven Brill.

This is one of the better Sandler films in my opinion. Nothing special or anything. I gave it a few extra points for the soundtrack, for the most part Sandler has a good taste in music, especially for silly comedies and this on is better than most of his. Also when he hits that one guy who is in all of his movies over the head with a trash can, that was perfect. I am a sucker for physical comedy though.

I was hoping this was going to be the worst movie ever because I love the original but - and it pains me to say it - it's actually pretty enjoyable for the most part. John Tuturro was fantastic, Adam Sandler was himself and Winona Ryder was ok too. Some moments were too stupid for me but overall an enjoyable comedy, nowhere near the standard of the orignal but a nice bit of light fare.

Brill's update of the Depression-period Capra-Cooper antique, populism and preachiness intact, is an above-average Sandler comedy, about a sweet-natured rube who inherits a bundle. (40 billion, for inflation.) The average is raised in part by the rest of the batting order, Gallagher, Avari (the one whose hair is only on his face), Ryder, Harris, Ferrell, Presnell, Buscemi, and most of all Turturro as a "sneaky" Spanish manservant with a foot fetish. (Spanish? Foot fetish? Homage to Buñuel?)

Lazy all too typical Sandler movie, which is frustrating cause I actually think Sandler can be funny. His interviews behind the scenes stuff are usually hilarious. It's lesser Sandler certainly, but we aren't approaching Little Nicky levels of suck on this one. It's stupid and likely farts all over the legacy of the original, but there are just enough things here to make it mildly redeemable. While it loses points for Winona Ryder, it gains some points for Steve Buscemi, an in-flight 'Space Oddity' sing-along, a very very sneaky John Turturro, and dipping its fries in its Frosty. Oh, and Peter Gallagher's eyebrows. It's decent fun. You could do much worse.
