Mr. Deeds

2002
Romance, Comedy
1h 36m
When Longfellow Deeds, a small-town pizzeria owner and poet, inherits $40 billion from his deceased uncle, he quickly begins rolling in a different kind of dough. Moving to the big city, Deeds finds himself besieged by opportunists all gunning for their piece of the pie. Babe, a television tabloid reporter, poses as an innocent small-town girl to do an exposé on Deeds. Of course, Deeds' sincere naiveté has Babe falling in love with him instead. Ultimately, Deeds comes to find that money truly has the power to change things, but it doesn't necessarily need to change him. (imdb)

The Rob Schneider Project - day 12. Almost three years after the previous lab shut down under mysterious circumstances we've been hired to continue the thankless task of cataloging the effect of seeing Rob Schneider. Mr. Deeds offered little of The Schnei', but exposed the team to Sandler trying to force the viewer to love him. Gag-inducing and aggressively unfunny. Rob's cameo almost felt like a relief. This feeling? It... worries me. But the work must continue. Schneider-annoyance factor: 2

Schneider quest, film 12: After a hiatus of almost 3 years, the crew decided to continue the quest. Figured their mental wounds have healed over these years, they started this movie with great optimism. Instead of being nuked with awful Schneider faces, the crew got Adam Sandler instead. A whole new level of awfulness. We barely made it, and the 2 seconds of Rob felt like heaven. I felt bad for Turturro and Buscemi. What a movie to play in...

What kind of father keeps his son as a butler, without telling him he's his son, and doesn't bother to leave a will? One in an Adam Sandler universe, apparently.

Adam Sandler has lots and lots and lots of money... and that's pretty much the film's whole plot and conflict. Though, credit where it's due, I did kinda laugh at the scene with all the cats.

Not offensively bad, and it's kind of sweet in a typical Adam Sandler comedy way. However, the plot is very predictable (and simultaneusly doesn't make much sense), it's not very funny and the movie wastes so much potential with the "small towner inherits $40 billion" premise.

I am very very very sneaky. I don't know if I would say this is really a romance. Wynona Ryder does a great job as Sandler's main squeeze. Its ironic that Sandler is able to find the exact town that Ryder fibbed she grew up in. Its an average Sandler movie. The fight scene in the pizza shop is a good part of the movie too.

Of all of the Sandler comedies this was the pinnacle of his adolescent fomula with a simple story, flat characterization and enough beatings of the upper class to paste a stupid grin on your face. Barely a step away from transforming into a cartoon, but surreal enough that you won't care.

Adam Sandler ain't funny, Winona Ryder ain't funny - hell, even Steve Buscemi ain't funny in this piece of turd! If it wasn't for the few acceptable drama performances by Sandler - Punch-Drunk Love, Reign Over Me - I would have a hard time accepting his existence. Now he barely earns my approval. But his comedies do not.

Suffers from many of the classic Sandler flaws of comedy, but still manages to produce a few laughs. Turturro is great, and there are some fun moments (like the Space Oddity scene). I imagine the original has a lot more class, which this version could have used.

It's lesser Sandler certainly, but we aren't approaching Little Nicky levels of suck on this one. It's stupid and likely farts all over the legacy of the original, but there are just enough things here to make it mildly redeemable. While it loses points for Winona Ryder, it gains some points for Steve Buscemi, an in-flight 'Space Oddity' sing-along, a very very sneaky John Turturro, and dipping its fries in its Frosty. Oh, and Peter Gallagher's eyebrows. It's decent fun. You could do much worse.
