One of the better "inspirational teacher" movies, helped immensely by Dreyfuss's strong performance, ample humor, and a gratifyingly light directorial touch. Made me want to take up music lessons again, however briefly.

Tour de force by Dreyfuss ... just superb acting. Sure its sentimental, but not by any means ladled with saccharin as you might expect. A Story that means something namely .. we might not THINK we are having an effect on 'life' and the people around us, but we are!

I was in band all through junior high and high school, so I'm obligated to like it, melodrama and all.

It's like one of those motivational posters that hangs on office walls, but in movie form.

A feel-good movie, and that's about all you can say about it. It succeeds in making you feel good...it's done its job. Period.

A great movie about the value of art and music. It also delves into relationships and what people mean to each other and how we can take each other for granted.

Ugh! An outrageous smarm-fest so sickening as to make the blood run cold. The "opus" of the title is every bit as vapid as the rest of the movie. Ugh!

My wife suggested this one night but I thought she had said, "Mr. Hocus Pocus" which I naturally assumed was an all male recasting of Hocus Pocus. The thought of witnessing that train wreck was too powerful. Why would they do it? Would there still be musical numbers? Would the cat be a dog this time? So fascinating. Then it turned out to be a story of familial redemption played by the guy from Third Encounters that abandons his children. Oh well. Who would play the Bette Midler part?

Un très touchant mélodrame où les regards sont éternels.

Pretty average teacher movie. The only really interesting thing about it is that Dreyfuss was 58 at the time, and the makeup people de-aged him as best they could so that he could play 30-odd years of this character's life, as opposed to the usual method of taking a young guy and piling on the latex wrinkles

Competent for the (sub?)genre, I guess. That means, though, that it creates a growing sensation of nausea as it jumps through all its hoops. It's telling that the most underwhelming piece of music in the film is the titular "American Symphony" played at the end, which is all of two minutes long and includes one of the cheesiest electric guitar solos I've heard. If I worked for most of my life on an orchestral piece and that was all I had to show for it, I'd swear off music.

Long winded "story of a man" works as well as it does thanks to fine performances all around; Dreyfuss successfully humanises his potentially dull and insipid Mr Holland, introducing delicate shadings and ambiguosities to the sainted school teacher, making his final redemption/tribute pay off emotionally. It's a shame the direction and screenplay work against Dreyfuss at every turn – not so much sentimentalising as overstating every emotional beat to within an inch of its life.

Sappy, mellowdramatic, long-winded. But Iliked it anyway. The growth of the charecters over 20 years is well documented and it is a very enjoyable tale. Give the movie a chance, you may enjoy it too.
