Carried solely by McKellen, the story itself is a bit dry and plodding. You aren't supposed to be intrigued by the mystery itself I imagine, but the various incarnations of a brilliant mind unraveling it.

Ian McKellen is the man of a thousand masks, deftly playing a not-yet-senile detective in pre-war London, an almost-senile detective in post-war Japan, and a full-blown-senile detective on the Dover Coast. What I learned from this movie: OH NO, NOT THE BEES! NO! OH MY GOD, NOT THE-- Oh, wasps. Okay.

Ian McKellan looks OLD in this flim. I had the hardest time keeping my interest, which led to further confusion about the time jumps. There's no good way to tell an aging story without flashbacks though. To that effect, Mr. Holmes told a grounded story about the mortality of a man who is used to outthinking everything and everyone. Too bad the film was too afraid of killing a child or killing McKellen. Fav scene: being ridiculed by the underground lady when searching for the other lady.

A lackluster story diminishes the effect of Sir Ian McKellen's excellent performance while pleasant music and the lovely rural setting play capable supporting roles.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, significantly more than I have enjoyed a film in a while. Whilst a stand-alone production it performs wonderfully and acts as a deep and genuine if downbeat ending note to the stories of the renown detective. If you have a taste for slow paced, thoughtful filmmaking and a more traditional take on the Sherlock Holmes formula it's certainly worth a watch.

Mr. Holmes takes on a perspective that is twice as interesting as it believes, but less than half as interesting as I would like. The film is mainly a character drama, with a mundane mystery used as support; showcasing senility and an aged quest for humanity with a character more firmly tethered to reality...though I think I prefer Holmes as the pompous, smart-arse we're used to. What makes this film somewhat enjoyable are the strong performances, especially Parker as the precocious young lad.

A gentle, almost whimsical, character driven drama about an aging Sherlock Holmes with strong performances from the 3 main players.

I actually quite enjoyed this one. It had the typical mystery elements, but was also a good character study of Holmes, and an exploration of old age in general. Ian McKellen was excellent in the lead role, of course, expertly portraying different stages and sides of the character. Laura Linney was good, too. I suppose the film isn't anything extraordinary, but I'd still recommend it if only to showcase that McKellen remains one of the great working actors.

Only a moderate success thanks to a flashback technique that fails it, Mr. Holmes offers a different take on its eponymous character - although unfortunately not a great one. Fans of Ian McKellen or Sherlock Holmes will want to check out Mr. Holmes; for most other people, it won't be worth the watch.

An interesting and mostly well executed twist on the mythology of Sherlock Holmes. Quite a contrast to Guy Ritchie's two recent (well, within the last ten years) Sherlock Holmes films (which I prefer).

Mr. Holmes told a good story. I've never seen a story about the end of Mr. Holmes. It is difficult to see him feeble at times yet still sharp as a tack other times. This is one of the messages of this film, that aged people people still have a lot of offer and we shouldn't discount those people. Laura Linney is fantastic in this movie. I'm not an Irish accent expert but I thought she did well with her accent. Ian McKellen was also amazing. He fleshed out Homes in so many ways.

Good stuff, not at all in line with recent Sherlock Holmes films but at least as good. This Holmes is aged and has a failing memory. Well acted by all of the main players. Well worth a look.

Hits all the buttons I'd hoped it would, including the one for a fresh take on the character and an original plot; which in spite of all the many variations on the theme, it is nowhere near being done to death--which includes, BTW, Arthur Conan Doyle, who gives credit for the archetype of crime detection to Edgar Allen Poe and his C. Auguste Dupin who first appeared in "Murders in the Rue Morgue" in 1841.

I thought this was a very nice, if depressing, classic portrait of an elderly Mr. Holmes. The American Holmes movies have been such action films, they've really had nothing to do with Holmes. This was a Holmes story and the relationship with the boy seemed to work.

It's retirement, dear Watson. This film was a really fun one to watch. Have you ever wondered what the heroes from our favorite books or movies do in their old age? Well wonder no more with this movie! Ian McKellen does a great job as Sherlock Holmes. He's 93 in this movie and trying to work out the details of an old case. He has a lot of scenes with this young boy named Roger and they have excellent chemistry together. Laura Linney also plays a good part of Roger's mother...

The most genteel and benign Sherlock Holmes movie ever made. Take your book-loving granny to it. McKellen's performance is impeccable, and the movie's pretty nimble and quiet and affable and easy to watch, even as it glances against potentially thorny issues like the fear of death and whether or not it's beneficial to develop close friendships late in life. Also, it's a mystery, a little, kinda.

There's little to scrutinize in Mr. Holmes, but there's also little outside of McKellen that's exceptional. Condon is a competent director and he makes competent films. I was quickly engaged with the story, and stayed invested throughout, so it was good. It's a good film. It's lovely. It's about as good as you can expect a G-rated 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes film to be. It's the film you see with your grandma. Actually my grandma would really like this. I'm gonna watch it with her.

Don't let my (relatively) low score fool you - I did appreciate it. McKellen's performance is stellar and I like how the story is presented. All the fuss about Holmes and many interpretations that we have of him nowadays, should maybe be put on a hold for while - and this film serves that perfectly.

His story is a deftly crafted tale of small intimacies and hard-found ruminations. It is a moving, quiet mulling on the place of cold logic--something that was always Sherlock's stock in trade--in a world full of brokenness and heartache. In print, the great detective once said that his methods were simply "founded upon the observation of trifles." And that is exactly what this film does so wonderfully well. (pluggedin.com)

Jumping between time periods didn't work for me at first, but everything gelled well enough by the end. Even though there's nothing spectacular about any single aspect of the film, it's ability to stay focused keeps it engaging.

McKellen is captivating and Linney and Parker provide solid support and so much more. The wide-ranging story is ultimately a simple and sad one about Holmes the clinical idealist for the first time regretting telling the truth, and questioning whether the methods he employs are the best, or just the only ones he knows. Production value and direction occasionally lacks.

Spoileryish: The moral of the story is that everybody feels better when you lie. Holmes forgetfulness doesn't have much to do with the ending and almost feels like a loose thread. The films a bit fluff but mckellan makes it feel like more. Mckellan in wonderfully shot English countryside.

In 1947, an aged and increasingly senile Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) tries to remember exactly what happened on his final case, and is reminded of a revelation which shakes the very foundation of his character. Perhaps not what one would expect from a piece of Holmes cinema, but it keeps the subversions in check and proves enthralling as a character study; McKellen portrays Holmes in his prime and decline alike impeccably; Laura Linney and Milo Parker support him well. Solid production.

The decline of Sherlock Holmes. Old and suffering from dementia. A different kind of Holmes. Not for those that want a tantalizing mystery. The mystery is Mr. Holmes (2015) solving the puzzles that is his failing memory. In other words, a dim drama about aging where Ian McKellen puts on a remarkable performance. Not that one expects anything less from the grand old man. Kinda fun how it takes pokes at Sherlock Holmes in popular culture, from those 40s films, pipe and most of all the hat

Those expecting an epic and sprawling mystery might leave unsatisfied, but those who want a sincere and subtlety dynamic representation of the legendary character from McKellen, and a grounded and poignant (if not wholly remarkable) character study need look no further.
