Mr. Moto's Gamble

A rather good murder mystery is spoiled by the addition of a comedy duo of amateur sleuths. There is also a lack of the atmosphere found in the previous Moto's. This all makes sense though once you learn this was originally going to be a Charlie Chan before they brought in Lorre instead. A misstep in the series.

Passes the time.

Mr. Moto becomes Charlie Chan! Warner Oland got sick so they just adjusted the script to fit their other Oriental hero - Peter Lorre. Actually they didn't do too much adjusting which is why the normally violent Mr. Moto is almost a pacifist like Chan. It becomes a hybrid and you're not sure if one should love it for the Chan qualities or love it for the Moto peculiarities. But I love both so I still enjoyed this even if it's not near the best entries in either franchise.
