Kinda like the Chinese Ghostbusters. A Taoist priest and his two bumbling apprentices unearth a coffin that turns out to contain a powerful vampire. He starts a killing spree that produces more vampires and the priest has to keep everything under control. Right as things are reaching their peak, a horny female ghost is thrown into the mix, trying to seduce one of the apprentices. A great mix of comedy, kung fu action and some cheesy magic effects that spawned a slew of sequels and imitators.

I was only vaguely aware of this genre but Eureka hyped this film up as the granddaddy of them all. It didn't disappoint. I liked the way I felt scared in the beginning, so I should go seek out more straight horror in this theme. The physical comedy was spot on (and painful for the 2nd story fall). Too bad the vampires stopped hopping. Fav scene: master fighting the female ghost whose head flies off like in Mystics in Bali, and then he kicks the magic dagger at her head causing it to explode.

Oh god, the first scene alone made my sides split with laughter. I am now in need of surgery. It's a superb splicing of action and comedy, the two working hand-in-hand to ludicrous lengths.

Very entertaining horror comedy about a kung fu priest and his idiot apprentices fighting vampires (or zombies or ghosts I'm not sure). Its mix of macabre slapstick, cartoony characters, wild horror effects & crude yet uncynical tone reminded me a lot of Braindead (much less excessive obviously). Seems very western inspired but also very Chinese in a delightful way. While the horror & comedy elements are hardly well-balanced, they both still manage to come off quite strong. The brisk pace helps.

While "Mr. Vampire" might be a half decade late to the Jiangshi party, it is the best, and most remembered flick, in no small part due to a number of pseudo-sequels sharing the same name, as was common in Hong Kong in the 80's and 90's. There's decent slapstick, some fun jokes, kung fu, and the most famous unibrow donning taoist priest in history, and I hear that competition is stiff in that category.

Great fight scenes, varied and actually funny comedy and while the story is absurd it's taken just seriously enough to make you care while still embracing the silliness.

A funny vampire parody with a touch of uniqueness, that really elevates the whole perception of the film.

A lot of fun. There are some big laughs, and I don't know how they do it but the vampires, ghosts, etc. manage to be hilarious and threatening at the same time. Lam is doing pretty much the same thing in this that he did in Magic Cop, so he's still the perfect mix of capable and amusingly stern.

The humor is silly and outdated, but still it has an undeniable charm which makes it a joy to watch. Plus more.... most important it has highly enjoyable action-comedy.

The comedy is a quite acquired taste and it could actually use a bit more hopping vampire goodness, but I find it impossible to be mad at the one that started this wonderful sub-genre.

A little more slapstick than martial arts, this spends a lot of time trying to make the mythology seem real, and almost weighs itself down with too many crazy things happening (in one of the final sequences, they're fighting zombie vampires and a ghost). It's still a riot, even in some of the wordier parts.

Much better than expected! At first I kept my scepticism thinking "this is just too silly for me", but very soon I was laughing out loud at these crazy antics. 80's Hong Kong comedies are just awesome! There is very little kung-fu action in it, but lots of slapstick mixed with chinese lore. Very charming, innocent and simply hilarious movie.
