Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle

Quite possibly Rudolph's most accomplished work, despite being on the surface at least a somewhat conventional biopic and thus less willfully eccentric than some of his other films. Although his quirky style is more subdued here than usual, in this material he may have actually found a perfect avenue within which to express his trademark combination of wistful, swooning romanticism and sharply-written witticisms. Also, the entire cast is fantastic, in particular Leigh who's never been better.

The saddest movie about being funny and the funniest movie about being miserable. I loved every wittily weepy second.
