Ms. Purple

I appreciate Justin Chon's choices in storytelling, with both Gook and Ms. Purple blending universal themes and the neo-realist tradition with a uniquely Asian-American perspective. I just wish he'd rise above the obvious visual and musical nods to his cinematic influences -- Gook had clear Do the Right Thing and La Haine influences, and here in Ms. Purple, it's the Christopher Doyle/Wong Kar-Wai cinematography and score.

i love Wong Kar-wai and apparently so does Justin Chon. i also love when a new shade of Los Angeles gets put on film. somehow we still haven't told the stories in the karaoke bar i went to twice, until now. sick.

Excellent Wong Kar Wai cinematography influences and the music was a bit overbearing at times (just like WKW). Not really sure about the ending. Good breaks with the valet and his family. The child actors did a good job. Fav scene: just heart wrenching watching dad bring kids to mom only to get rejected.

Not sure what about this was supposed to be influenced by Wong Kar Wai. Neither the direction/cinematography nor story reminded me of him.
