Compelling sense of pressure and occasionally lovely photography elevate a perfunctory script.

Early hopes that this might be another DETOUR were dashed. For the first half it seems to be going somewhere, but then it loses traction and meanders towards an unsatisfying conclusion. However, Ulmer pulls off a few terrific moments, and the first half is quite compelling. Langton makes for a good leading man. More notably, this is the final appearance of the tragic Barbara Payton. Her vulnerability is an asset. The film leaves something to be desired, but it has some charm and talent in it.

The key turning points in the film are kind of nonsensical, which holds the film back, but it's such a fun ride anyway that I don't mind too much.

There are some good moments, particularly how Ulmer intercuts shots of a speeding train to heighten excitement and make our police hero's decision to escape with his convicted lady seem an inevitable extension of heroism, not an arbitrary act of folly. Langton is a good noir hero, full of weariness and threadbare principles, and Barbara Payton looks sweet, vulnerable, and kinda stupid--which she probably was. It ain't Detour, but--like most Ulmer--it is better than it has any right to be.

One of the most exciting opening sequences and twenty minutes kinda dull the rest of the way.
