Far more amusing than I ever would've guessed. I watched this on strength of Saulnier alone and it did not disappoint. There is one of the funniest juke moves I've ever seen committed to film. I liked the goofball characters and the goofball tone.

Wasn't the greatest thing I've seen, but I had a ton of fun with it. Between this and Blue Ruin, Saulnier has skill in merely filming anything in an interesting manner. The Art discussion is hamfisted, but it is anytime someone tries to use it. Similarly to Blue Ruin, the main character has a great cardboard knight costume and is so bland, goofy, and hapless that he works completely in the absurd situation he's forced to react to.

The horror is unenticing, save for one or two pieces of FX near the end. The characters are fairly paper-thin, but then loaded with arty stereotypes that are interesting to see interact and butt heads. Most jokes fall flat, but a few are great. Alexander's overselling can be entertaining. Could definitely be edited tighter than its already brief runtime. The escape from the closet scene almost makes up for the rest of the movie.

I'm an idiot who keeps on watching terrible horror-comedies, Criticker thought I'd give this a 60 score, case in point

Partly a comedy of errors, and partly cheesy horror, but neither are any good. However, it is interesting enough to keep the attention.

The movie is o.k. - a little homage to classical exploitation movies with a bunch of black humor.

Clocks in under 80 minutes. Good shot composition and colouring. Characters were interesting enough but not overly memorable. Feels like some of the group scene's in Scott Pilgrim but not as tight.

while there's no color in the title, there's already distinct characteristics of saulnier's weirdly accurate grasp on reality and how most movie tropes would actually play out. it also shows him as an apt filmmaker and cinematographer, even when on a...let's call it "budget". the dry, violent and dark humor makes it somewhat comparable to early raimi or peter jackson, although it doesn't reach the same level of cultishness.

I don't really find something like this funny or frightening, but it is nevertheless oddball and goofy enough to entertain as a popcorn movie. A far cry from Saulnier's later work.

A weird movie that was recommended to me years ago that I enjoyed. I probably liked the premise more than the execution but it still worked for me more than it didn't.

Awful excuse of a horror comedy that uses just the wrong kind of humour with bad actors.

This takes a little while to get going, but about 30 minutes in it starts pulling together & getting good, & the ending goes totally bonkers (in a great way).

Great build-up for 45 minutes, but can't hold that level when the bodies start hitting the floor en masse.

(mini spoilers)The acting is really bad. but im fine with it. knowing this is a Jeremy saulnier(green room, Blue ruin) movie...I knew there had to be something to it. The plot is so stupid but I like the main character. he just bumbles through the movie. brings pumpkin bread to his own murder, thats just funny. its gorey like most of his films and its fun to see macon blair grow through all these movies as an actor. Id recommend watching if you are a fan of his other work.

Yeah, this scenario would be my only chance of surviving a horror movie. Saulnier's debut has a lot of the stuff that I love about Blue Ruin and Green Room, just not quite as sharp or well-acted yet.

Got some updated Evil Dead vibes. Too low budget, slow in the second act, up its own ass, and batshit for me to recommend it. But there is fun here, and I can appreciate the cheesy effects and makeup.

Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair go on to do much better things and you can see the beginnings of their future projects here - the dark humor, the off kilter camera effects, the cinema verite style of acting. The film starts off very slow and there are definite pacing issues, but the breakneck third act, which has low budget American Psycho vibes, has a chaotic energy that is entrancing. Still, doesn't hit its mark enough to be consistently entertaining.

Nope, not a fan. The comedy isn't funny and gore aside the horror aspect doesn't deliver either.

Everything you could ask for in a post-retro horror film. The ending is so in your face on consumer ignorance, …!!!
