Enjoyable adventure saga struggles to find a focus or thrust for its main narrative, striving for an overarching existentialist metaphor that just isn't there, which ultimately means much of the non-action scenes (and the overwrought climax) feel somewhat pretentious. O'Toole as always is brilliant, as the mad obsessive Murphy, and Noiret provides fine support; the beautiful scenery stunningly photographed in widescreen also doesn't hurt.

Most of it, especially the ending, comes off stale and unlikely.

Genuinely strange war movie, and in all the good ways. O'Toole and Phillips, so often in movies together, appear in roles quite different from either the "prestige O'Toole" movies or the "wild man O'Toole" movies. And, yes, Phillipe Noiret appeared in movies while he still had hair

The premise of a lone survivor getting deranged in his obsession for revenge is an interesting one. But many scenes, even potentially exciting ones like O'Toole getting a broken airplane in the air after repairing it, drag out too long that they become a bore. The movie is made watchable primarily due to the chemistry between O'Toole and comic sidekick Philippe Noiret.
